Baby Removed at Birth Support

Mumtobe799 · 04/12/2024 00:07

Hello

This is extremely controversial and I feel embarrassed posting but I’m looking for a bit of help. I am due to give birth within the next few weeks and after Social Services involvement throughout my pregnancy, I have been told they will be removing my baby at birth. Baby will be placed with their Dad under an interim court order whilst assessments are ongoing.

Does anybody know what removal at birth actually means? My baby and I will need to stay in hospital for a few days, is it likely I will be able to stay with them or will they likely split us up? These are questions I have asked Social Services but they will not give me an answer.

I would like to breast feed; is this something Social Services have to support as it is in the best interest of baby. My baby is being removed due to mental health concerns, no issues around substance or alcohol abuse so that being in breast milk isn’t a worry.

If anyone with any legal experience or people who may have gone through or know someone who has gone through something similar can help I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

I don’t think my psychiatrist would agree to sterilisation and if I’m completely honest I don’t think I want to be. If I met someone really supportive in 10 years I might want to try again, I think I’d feel ‘less of a woman’ psychologically.

I would try the copper coil though!

I've got a copper coil fitted. I didn't want anything hormonal as I found it can effect my moods. It lasts 10 years and I found it was relatively painless to fit.

I completely admire how you've handled this. I hope your MH remains stable and you can eventually have more access to your children.

Isitreallybad · 12/01/2025 13:55

I agree re a copper coil. Definitely do not get sterilised .

Having read all your posts
I just came on to say
I think your amazing,,the way you have handed this with dignity and nothing but care and concern for your children, not even arguing with the dad about the name ,you let him have his way , putting the needs of your daughter to be called the same name by everyone, before your right to name her ,and the way you coped with your social worker who has no understanding of your religion,.
You are already an excellent mother , because you are putting your children first ,way before your own wants and needs .
At some point someone able to make decisions, will see all this and appreciate how hard you are trying and succeeding to be a very good mother .
I really hope are able to play a full part in your childrens lives
You should be incredibly proud of yourself xx

Hi OP, as others have said, you are being very level headed in a very emotive and difficult situation, I really hope that you get a fair custody arrangement.
re the “always small risk” please look up the statistics for any adult to have mental health episode and the incidence of relapse. DDs father also has an “always small risk” of MH issues in his lifetime.
Keep going, collect as much evidence to demonstrate your clear parenting abilities and self awareness of your own risks. We are rooting for you and DD.

Thank you for your kind words!

I have a lot of meetings over the next week so I’m going to update this thread regularly just in case another woman is going through this.

I understand a lot of people probably don’t think I’m deserving of my child or being a Mum to them but I am really trying.

We don’t know your full story but based on what you have told us no one would think you are not a good mom. Sometimes we have no control over our mental health. They will want a positive outcome unless you become a danger to yourself or your baby. I am sure they want to do the best for you & your baby & offer support to facilitate that outcome. There are psychiatric mother & baby hospitals these are very hard come by as they are so busy. Worth inquiring about though. Wishing you the best. Follow up conversations in writing. Seek solicitors help. Wishing you the best .

you are being so calm and level headed and brave OP. Rooting for you

Just happened across this thread and I just wanted to say what an amazing woman and mother you sound. Wishing you all the best and hoping that you're able to put this episode behind you very soon and move forward with your children xx

Can I ask why you feel my children shouldn’t have their biological mother? Genuine question, do you have experience of psychosis?

Please just don’t engage with this absolute idiot. Avoid those who want to make you feel bad. You are doing so well and have the support of so many here.

My baby hasn’t ’just been taken away’ they live with their Dad because I was very poorly after the birth of my first child and I was very poorly in this pregnancy.

I absolutely agree that in most circumstances children are not removed to the other parent because of mental health conditions but if they’re more severe (like severe post partum psychosis) it absolutely can happen.

You should probably read the full thread, and educate yourself on post partum psychosis, before spouting such nonsense.
