I am pleased to see what they wrote as well. I’m glad they were clearly acknowledging that antisemitism is present on those threads.
Personally I do think the site would benefit from stricter rules about where things can be posted eg no more “posting for traffic” on AIBU. I think it would be better if AIBU was only for describing a scenario you’re involved in that you may or may not have been unreasonable in.
I’d like to see all the Israel/Gaza threads moved over to CITME automatically as at least people can choose when to read CITME whereas it popping up everywhere is something that I do find hard.
I’ve been wondering a lot lately about how many of the people online (I’m not specifically referring to on MN) parroting things they’ve read on TikTok could actually find any of these places (Iran, Israel etc) on a map.
I obviously don’t mean everyone and I don’t mean that as a throwaway insult of anyone’s intelligence. Not that many years ago I knew little of the Middle East. I think it wasn’t that long ago politics was boring to most and a large large number of people (majority dare I say) knew very little of specifically the history of the Middle East.
It worries me how well they’re doing at the propaganda side of things. People are just believing any random statistics they see reposted on Facebook without any sources and repeating them.
It’s like those videos where protesters were asked “which river, which sea?” and so so many could not answer.
I genuinely think a lot of people have never read anything about it other than what they see on TikTok which seems to just be “Jews turned up one day and killed everyone and stole their land while doing their evil laughs”.
I really wish blatantly untrue things like “millions of Gazans killed” and “all buildings in Gaza destroyed” wouldn’t be allowed to be left up as I think it’s extremely damaging. There’s a good number of people who will accept it unquestioningly.
However I also accept that’s an unreasonable ask and MN can’t get into being strict fact checkers for every post they see - especially with such a complicated situation.
I have tried, before, to actually argue some of the facts - not in the hope of educating the person I’m arguing with but anyone reading who hasn’t yet developed an opinion - but it’s so draining and time consuming and feels pointless. The time spent constructing a polished post very carefully and with sources is time I could be with my family or relaxing or being productive.
Thinking of everyone here and sending strength in these times.
