I actually think Coldplay got the tone right and he reached out to Israelis as well, and he seems to have been the only one that did.

I must have missed when they reached out to Israelis but thank you for pointing this out because I may need to rewatch.

Kneecap are awful & so are their political views. They're from NI, but will say they're Irish. But hold out of date sectarian bigotry, e.g. "England out of Ireland" mince.

Plus allegations of sexual abuse has been made against at least one of them along with threatening people to keep quiet.

They're pro-Provo. And their name basically glorifies PIRAs favourite method of abusing young people.....blowing their kneecaps off.

Ugh.

They sound worse than I'd thought! I got the kneecap reference which is bad enough.

I think they played Secret Garden Party last year.... Someone sent me the list of acts and I saw them and said "WTAF?!". Have the organisers lost their minds that it's now basically OK to invite bands who just by their name alone let alone their views, glorify terrorism? Or do people have short memories?

I mean.....I know the answer to that and I guess to see that, passing as acceptable, was just a warm up act to what we have seen the last few months. ...

This is Episcopal mind control blueberry pecan bread (a quick bread, no yeast, just baking soda and baking powder). I usually make it for coffee hour in the fall when we're doing the annual pledge drive. It's a bit sweet, and I put Turbinado sugar on top before baking it. Orange juice is the liquid, which gives it an interesting taste. It's supposed to put people in a good enough mood to fill out a pledge card for the coming year.

I made it today because we picked blueberries yesterday at a pick-your-own farm near us (I'm in a semi-rural area).

I can report that it works moderately well with teenagers, but not to the point of getting them to clean their rooms.

I mean, I suppose I'm happy to take my chances if you're willing to share the recipe? 🤤🤤🤤 It's presumably got pecans, blueberries and orange juice in it, so it's basically healthy. Actually, it's basically a fruit salad.

I'm happy to share the recipe, you're right, it's health food with a bit of sugar and flour. It's from a very old spiral bound book of baking recipes I've had for decades which is falling apart.

Everything is American, obviously. 350 degrees F is 177 degrees C. I have a convection oven, and it's always done in 50 minutes. I've substituted blueberries for cranberries and Turbinado sugar for white sugar. I sprinkle a few tablespoons of the Turbinado sugar on the top before it goes in the oven. American all-purpose flour is similar to your self-rising flour but without the baking soda or baking powder, which is why the recipe calls for adding them separately. I think an American cup is about the same as a UK cup, but I'm sure the conversion is online somewhere. Three tablespoons of butter is three ounces by weight. I tend to go a bit heavy on the blueberries and pecans. I omit the grated orange rind when making the blueberry version, but feel free to keep it. I can see that the amount of sugar called for is a little unclear in the photo. It's three quarters of a cup.

I'm happy to answer any questions about the recipe.

I think your all-purpose flour is what we call plain flour in the UK.

quantumbutterfly · 01/07/2024 00:08

I had to google turbinado sugar, in UK it's closest to demerara (free flowing), as opposed to muscovado (more clumpy).

I have two additional tips for the blueberry pecan bread recipe. I let the butter come to room temperature and then cut or blend it into the dry ingredients with an electric hand mixer. Also, it can be a bit crumbly when warm. After the loaf cools to room temperature, wrap it in aluminum foil or plastic wrap (or both) and keep it in the fridge (if you have room 😁), it cuts more cleanly when cold.

Enjoy!

Olé, or should I say ow-lé.

I wonder if @MissConductUS recipe will work with gooseberries, I never know what to do with them. Most other produce that DP brings home gets put in a crumble.
He proudly brings home lots of fruit and veg that I then have to deal with, it's the veggie equivalent of hunting a buffalo I guess. Or maybe akin to a cat leaving dead mice on the bed.
Current kitty prefers to chase moths and their wings do make a flaky mess poor things, wish I could train her to catch spiders.

MissConductUS · 04/07/2024 15:36

@quantumbutterfly, we don't have gooseberries here. They were banned in the 1960s due to some plant fungus issue. They look a bit like grapes. I'd stick to blueberries for the recipe.

Today is Independence Day in the U.S. The area I live in (the Hudson Highlands) was the location of many important battles of the Revolutionary War, so it's really celebrated here. Many Jewish settlers in the colonies participated in the war in various ways, so that's part of the history of the period that we celebrate today.

Hope you have a lovely day celebrating today @MissConductUS ! I've been unable to open the link, but sounds like an interesting history!

Right, fess up - who was it who recommended "Unorthodox Love"? I can't be bothered going through the previous thread but I will if I have to!

@MissConductUS @Humdingerydoo Could it be a US/UK license thing? I can open it without a problem. DH is a teacher and one of his colleagues says that Juneteenth is Independence Day because that was the day every American was free.
