Me too. I was reassured that it was not what I had feared. The comments on the new one are a mess though - the first one had been calm and respectful. It only takes one person to kick everything off.

Some people are really showing themselves up on the new thread.
What a day to choose to do so.

Just had a siren because of a ballistic missile from Yemen, while DH and I were out delivering a meal - we had left our oldest babysitting!!!!!!
all ok, and a neighbour checked on them to make sure they had got in safely (there’s no reception in the mamad), and they knew where the choc was in the mamad and our oldest is a super responsible almost 15 year old, who got them all straight in to shelter and kept them calm, but that was awful 😳😳😳

I'm so sorry, that must have been incredibly stressful 😔

I'm so sorry, that must have been incredibly stressful 😔

Kids were fine, oldest is a superstar, DH was fine, I was a wreck. And had to fake calm because we were in a mamad with another family’s little kids and didn’t want to terrify them . I’m hitting the carbs now and bedtime just went out the window again 😖

gingergran · 07/10/2024 20:53

@EllaDisenchanted so sorry to hear. Sounds like my kind of nightmare. Today has been hard enough without that extra stress. Hope you have a quiet night

DuskyBlueDepartingLight · 08/10/2024 21:06

I needed to hear this today.

'You wish to see us disappear into oblivion. By all means, I invite you to hold your breath.' 🔥🔥🔥

G’mar Chasima Tova

may we all be inscribed and sealed in the book of life for a good, peaceful, healing year ahead

EllaDisenchanted · 11/10/2024 10:01

For those who are religious, I saw a lovely thought about Yom Kippur falling on Shabbat this year.

I don’t usually bring in Torah on here, but I thought it was a really nice framing for the fast

This is an interesting article by Jonathan Freedland on the world's gravest humanitarian disaster - no, not Gaza but Sudan - and an exploration of the reasons why this awful conflict has not attracted the attention of the world's media and so-called progressive movements. I'm not posting it "over there" as I'm done with that board (plus I have to go to Tesco's and don't have time to engage with a pile-on 😉) although I do think it's relevant to some of the discussions that take place there.

Sudan is the world’s gravest humanitarian disaster – but almost nobody cares | Jonathan Freedland

The war is killing tens of thousands, but not getting the attention it deserves. The reasons why are as complex as the conflict itself, asks Guardian columnist Jonathan Freedland

SharonEllis · 12/10/2024 09:27

@Opalfruitsalad74 its very relevant and exposes the hypocrisy of the left in particular, but wider society as well.

MissConductUS · 17/10/2024 18:25

I don't know why, but this thread stopped appearing in my threads "I'm On" list. I thought I'd pop on and make sure everyone has seen the good news.

Hopefully I'll start seeing the thread again now.

MissConductUS · 21/10/2024 18:17

Here's a great story about how the IDF tracked Sinwar in the tunnels and forced him above ground where he could be found. I'm very pleased but not surprised that U.S. military and intelligence personnel assisted in the effort. The US Army has had a doctrine for fighting underground that goes back to lessons learned in the Vietnam War.

Israel Killed Sinwar by Forcing Him From the Tunnels - The Israeli military attacked strategic underground complexes in Gaza, pushing Yahya Sinwar to leave the safety of Hamas’s labyrinth

@Humdingerydoo

I understand now the warning you gave on the other thread.

It was a mistake on my part to assume good faith & respond.

Hope everyone is doing okay.

@SababaToo

Are you still around?

You should do a search for some of the posters other comments on CITME about terrorists and their total refusal to blame them for anything. Hamas rockets are apparently inconsequential and Hezbollah are the real victims because Israel has been provoking them. Oh and they also were hoping more Israelis would be adversely impacted by rocket attacks. Absolutely not worth getting involved with certain posters, which is why I took a big step back once they entered the thread.

I'm more than ok with people having different opinions to me (two Jews, three opinions and all that!) but I have my limits, specially on what I thought was meant to be a drama-free board.

(I'm also humdingerydoo)

BooBooButts · 22/10/2024 14:51

Anyway, don't really feel comfortable discussing someone who is obviously on this board so I'm going to really subtly change topic now!

Anyone else feeling very conflicted about Simchat Torah this year? It was always my favourite holiday growing up, and this year I just don't want to celebrate at all. (For anyone not aware October 7th 2023 was the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah... A day where you're meant to be joyful, with lots of singing and dancing and kids eating sweets at Synagogue. Although the holiday didn't actually start until sunset on that horrid day, I'm finding it hard to separate the two events).

DuskyBlueDepartingLight · 22/10/2024 15:13

I agree that Simchat Torah is going to be hard.

I'll go to synagogue because I take comfort in coming together.

I have been here. My Jewish sisters and friends are never far from my thoughts, particularly with everything going on with the armed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

This thread did go quiet for about five days, which I now realize was likely due to people observing Sukkot. And before that there was a lot of discussion of the Jewish holidays, which I don't feel culturally qualified to participate in.

I am watching the military situation in Israel and commentary about it quite closely. The IDF is performing brilliantly, and my prayers are with the brave men and women currently engaged in the fight.

One good website for this type of news is twz.com (the war zone). Here's a recent article:

Israel Trades Increasingly Bellicose Threats With Iran As Retaliation Operation Looms - The threats come as the U.S. says it is very concerned about an unauthorized release of documents pertaining to Israel's attack plan.

BooBooButts · 22/10/2024 15:51

We're very lucky to have your support @MissConductUS .

Autumn is always a busy time in the Jewish world! Last lot of holidays this week and then things settle down for a while. My kids, who attend a Jewish school, have only had one full week of school in October 😅 It's been a looooooong month!

It was Simchat Torah in Israel (day earlier than chutz l’aretz).
Simchat Torah is tomorrow night here. Conflicted is a good word. How can we dance when our extended family is still hostage and suffering, when so many are displaced, families incomplete and struggling, and so many have been killed this year? the thing is we’ve been here before - the song ‘the man from vilna’ by Abie Rotenberg is based on a true story about Simchat Torah in Vilna after the war-
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eLB0Z6Na1oU I’ve always found the song and story very moving, but it’s never hit harder than now. I can’t listen to it without crying, and I couldn’t listen to it for most of this year at all.

Here's some good coverage of the Israeli strike on Iran that took place on Saturday from the WSJ. It's notable that Iran has reportedly told others in the area that the strikes were highly accurate, so we can assume that they had the intended effect.

From a strategic point of view, this marks a turning point in the long running conflict between Israel and Iran. In the past, the conflict was covert - done through proxies, targeted assassinations, hacking, etc. Now it's being carried out by the two countries' conventional military forces, and Iran is losing very badly.

So there's a bit of good news for us all. 😀

How Israel Pulled Off Its Largest-Ever Strike on Iran - Attack unfolded in waves and struck missile-manufacturing and surface-to-air missile-defense sites across Iran

Edited to add that by destroying Iran's last remaining long range air defense systems, Israel has left Iran's high value economic, political and military assets completely vulnerable to another attack. That's a very strong disincentive for Iran to strike Israel again. Iran's oil infrastructure and political leadership were spared this time, but the likely won't be the next time, and Iran is now powerless to stop it.

MissConductUS · 08/11/2024 14:25

I'm here to post more good news, and today, it's two for the price of one! 😁

Regardless of what you think of Donald Trump, his election is very good news for Israel and very bad news for Iran. Don't forget that Iran tried to assassinate Trump after he left office in 2021.

Trump’s Win Means It Isn’t Iran’s Middle East Anymore - Shock waves from the Republican sweep are felt throughout the region.

MissConductUS · 08/11/2024 14:31

Sorry, the "ad link" function is a bit wonky and I had to post this one separately.

The incoming Trump team has announced that they're going back to their maximum pressure campaign against Iran as soon as they take office.

Iran is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers through their support of various proxy forces in the ME over the years. I personally and very pleased that we're going to be taking a hard line with them again.

Trump to Renew ‘Maximum Pressure’ Campaign Against Iran - Ties with Tehran, which sought to assassinate president-elect and other former U.S. officials, are likely to be even worse this time around
