What a tragedy

Not clear whether an accident or not, mother being held and questioned, incredibly sad, those poor babies.

well my first thought was she was a paedophile to,
and assumed their children or her children, not sure, were involved in the abuse.

or she was trying to protect them from the public vitriol

wannaBe · 20/05/2010 13:48

but it doesn't make sense that being taken away by ss would be a fate worse than death. Because that is what is essentially being claimed by her if that is the reason she murdered them.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 20/05/2010 13:52

Maybe she feels she can accept it more if they were taken from her by death? Who knows?

"Look at www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23387432-mother-hangs-herself-after-killing-her-two-children.do"

This was my mothers best friend. It still haunts me.Especially now as I'm a mother to a 23 month old ds and expecting ds2 in a few weeks.
She tried for years to have children and was the kindest lady. This will always baffle us.Very tragic.

I'd rather wait for more infomation before jumping to too many conclusions. My sympathy is with the children, of course. I remember the recent case where a man and woman were found dead after jumping of a cliff with thier chil who was in their backpack. For days they were murdering scum until it was revealed the child had died naturally and they couldn't bear to life without him. Not saying she is innocent at all but, again, I'll wait for a fuller picture,

Blimey I know who it is now. I live on the Costa Del Sol and this guys face was all over the newspapers a couple of weeks ago. I thought he looked familiar and now realise that I have seen him on tv.

due in court today according to bbc news this morning.

VenusdeMedici · 21/05/2010 14:51

Another thought - while he is being charged with various things against a girl under 16, it says they happened in 1995. So it could be that he was 29 and the girl was 15, while, while illegal and therefore I believe called rape, could actually have been consensual, and nothing to do with young children at all.

Also, today's news reports say that he was prepared to face the charges back in 2007, until SS threatened to take away his then 3 year old daughter - which is why they then ran away.

I'm sure more facts will emerge in due course.

VenusdeMedici · 21/05/2010 14:52

which

wannaBe · 21/05/2010 15:06

um, a 29 year old having sex with a fifteen year old isn't appropriate either - a 29 year old should know better. So while not on the scale of paedophilia per se would still not be appropriate. If it was a sixteen/seventeen/probably up to about 21 tbh year old then I think some consideration could be given, but 29... no no no no.

also the charges wouldn't have been brought after so many years if it had been a consenting fifteen year old. And ss wouldn't be threatening to take away his daughter if she wasn't considered to be at risk.

expatinscotland · 21/05/2010 19:17

she's been charged. she has confessed. she was found to be lucid and aware.

Animation · 21/05/2010 22:00

When it comes to motive I don't buy the motive she has given - that she feared the kids would be taken away. That doesn't make sense.

If he's a paedophile, then by definition he has a personality disorder - either Narcissistic or Sociopathic. It strikes me that she could be enthrall to him - over-dependent, and under his control, and convinced she is unable to survive without him.

Therefor it's possible that her own neediness came before any instinct to protect her kids. The prospect of losing him seems more likely a motive. Her needs and his needs came first.

Nancy66 · 21/05/2010 22:13

it's a weird case and not what it seems.

she killed the kids - there's little doubt about that. the charges against him are complicated and not what they seem

autodidact · 21/05/2010 22:19

I'm stunned at the implied suggestion on this thread that children are better off dead than removed from their parents by social services.

PricklyThistle · 21/05/2010 22:26

Thank you autodidact for saying what I've been thinking.

Mother has admitted to killing children? Father has 13 charges of abuse against children (according to BBC news).

SS are the baddies cause she thought they might be removed? Where's John Hemmings? He normally has something to say on such threads

bundle · 21/05/2010 22:34

interesting re: her motivation which will come out in due course

i would hope that the wisdom of solomon would prevail in cases where a woman had even the teeniest bit of doubt

wannaBe · 21/05/2010 22:35

she admitted it

Still reserving judgement?

wannaBe · 21/05/2010 22:37

not sure if all the facts will ever come out though. if she pleads guilty there won't be a trial - she'll just be sentenced. To a long time hopefully.

obviously disclosure won't be same wananbe as she's pleaded guilty, but there may be disclosure in reports relating to any mitigating circs re: her sentencing (not sure how spanish system works)

Animation · 21/05/2010 22:44

The Soloman parable comes to mind - when two mothers claim a child is theirs. When Soloman suggests cutting the child in two the real mother said no, let the other woman have it then. He wasn't really going to cut the child in two - he just wanted to see who really LOVED the child. The real mother was prepared to give it away rather than let it die.

And as in this case - it can't be construed as an act of love that your children are better off dead than handed over to social services.

wannaBe · 21/05/2010 22:45

she was assessed and has been judged to be of sound mind.

It is naive to think that a mother wouldn't kill her own children in cold blood. This is the same woman who went on the run with her "aledgedly" paedophile husband, believing he was innocent and putting her children at risk - in fact having another child with him as they only had one child at the time of the alagations.

Clearly she never had any consideration for the welfare of those children. They were at risk all their lives. She had no qualms about putting her husband above their welfare, and no qualms about killing them when the time came.

She deserves nothing but contempt, and a loooong prison sentence.
