What a tragedy

Not clear whether an accident or not, mother being held and questioned, incredibly sad, those poor babies.

Indeed, Harpy. But of course, only a mentallly ill person would run off with a paedo fleeing from authorities, young child in tow, have another baby, then murder them with a plastic bag when the law catches up with the paedo.

"I personally find it incredibly insulting and feel that it contributes to stigmatisation of mentally ill people even further.

Murder your kids? Do terrible things to them and your partner? Must be mentally ill. Surely." and therefore by definition if you're mentally ill the assumption must be that you would be capable of murdering your kids and doing terrible things to other people which is so not the case.

ArseHolio · 19/05/2010 13:35

The only people in this story who deserve sympathy is those children.

Both parents deserve to rot.

BythewayItsStillMe · 19/05/2010 13:38

I've only just seen this on the news, I feel so sick.
I just cannot understand what would lead someone to do something like that to their children.
Its just so unbelievably desperate.

Those poor, poor little babies

tiredemma · 19/05/2010 13:45

How sad.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 19/05/2010 16:11

I have a mental illness when I had our first child and my DH was desperately worried when I told him I had imagined what would happen if I threw him out of the window. I knew I never would. But I was scared.

I had heard this woman was worried her kids would be taken from her.

It is just so sad.

How many people would have taken these children in and loved them..

2shoes · 19/05/2010 16:16

how awful
can't find sympathy for the person who murdered them

wannaBe · 19/05/2010 17:01

thing is fab, it's a far more calculated thing than a split second imagining iyswim.

Even if you take out of the equasion the fact the woman (aledgedly) murdered her children, she went on the run with a man wanted for sexual offences against children. She took a young child with her (surely if this man was suspected of being a paedophile then his own children were equally at risk?) she then had another child with him. Afraid of having her children taken away? Well so she should have been and so they should have been. Just a shame that rather than protect her children in the first place by not running away with her paedophile husband, she chose to put them at risk and then to murder them.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 19/05/2010 17:07

When I told my social worker I had been abused by someone meant to be in loco parentis, she said it would have been much worse if he had done it to his own children.. That makes me think that abusers don't always abuse their own children, so maybe this child was safe(ish)?

wannaBe · 19/05/2010 17:19

yes, I've read that abusers are much less likely to abuse their own children. But as a mother, most of us wouldn't take that risk, surely?

fifitot · 19/05/2010 17:20

Some don't abuse their own kids, some do. It doesn't make it any better or any worse. Am shocked your social worker said such a thing tbh. It's about the impact on the victim and if someone is in a caring role then effectively they are still breaking the trust you have in them.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 19/05/2010 17:45

I think she was trying to make me feel better.

VenusdeMedici · 19/05/2010 20:26

What if this woman didn't know he was a paedophile until last Friday when he was arrested? Perhaps he told her they were on the run because he had committed fraud or something similar? In that case, the poor woman must have gone through hell the last few days, since discovering what he's done, and she of course would have been terrified that she would lose her children - or possibly that they had inherited his "paedophile genes"? None of us knows the truth at the moment. So of course I feel desperately sad for those poor children, but possibly the mother is also a victim?

expatinscotland · 19/05/2010 20:28

A person who held a plastic bag over the face of a 5-year-old child and an 11-month-old baby.

A victim.

I've heard it all now!

And yes, if it had been a man who'd done the same thing there'd have been about 500 posts of vitriol on here in about 5 minutes.

grumpypants · 19/05/2010 20:33

Is it actually public knowledge that she knew - the info is unclear. I heard that they had lived apart in the UK and then were in Spain - it's not yet a fact she knew what he was wanted for is it, or that they were together in Spain? Weirdly, I am reminded of all those threads where couples flee abroad to escape social services and lots of people on here cheer for them. We just can't know everything.

expatinscotland · 19/05/2010 20:36

he was fleeing not from social services but from the law. because he jumped bail and failed to appear on child rape charges. she and her daughter then disappeared and were officially missing persons.

absolutely NO comparison to single mothers fleeing social services because they used to self-harm as teens.

expatinscotland · 19/05/2010 20:37

we know she murdered her 5 year old daughter and 11 month old son. she confessed to that.

we know he is charged with very serious child molestation and rape charges.

grumpypants · 19/05/2010 20:41

Actually, I think my point was that in most cases reported in the news, it's easy to take a position without being aware of the full facts. As I said, I was reminded of those threads, not directly comparing them. I'm just really cautious about filling in the gaps.

SlartyBartFast · 19/05/2010 22:12

well she flipped because they were found

2shoes · 19/05/2010 22:14

hmm
so you murder your 2 kids
and you are a victim!!!

SlartyBartFast · 19/05/2010 22:18

was it definitely her?
did i hear that he left yesterday?
or mishear?

junglist1 · 19/05/2010 22:28

So she didn't want them taken away from her, instead she took their lives. And stayed behind. I don't buy the couldn't be parted from them line.
