Proposed march through Wooton Bassett

Here

Initially saw this on the BBC but this link gives a bit more detail. I support everyone's right to free speech but ... dear goodness, this seems to be exceptionally bad taste. My DH is an army doctor and, during his time in a free Afgan clinic for civilians run by the army, saved many Afgan lives. He's going out there again in January. I can imagine I'd be incredibly distressed if he'd lost his life in the conflict and somebody wrote to me explaining what he'd 'really' died for. Ugh. Maybe it's just my personal bias, but I can't help feel that the proposed march is sited to cause maximum potential for violent conflict and to cause maximum hurt to those who are bereaved.

"But not scientifically..."

While there is nothing remotely scientific about religion or 'god' your probably correct but I suppose if we throw enough money at a research group they could come up with something.

atlantis · 04/01/2010 10:12

"Probably not quite like Christinaity but Islam is 600 years younger. Christianity 600 years ago was more uniform than it is now (and had its violent extremists)"

Couldn't agree more.

What are you talking about? If you are trying to define race "scientifically", then you will be talking about a biological structure presumably. If you're not, then I don't see where Science comes into it.

Ah, spoken like a psychologist Riven

You can test things to the best of your ability certainly, but whether your study is objective and controlled enough for it to be scientific is open to debate I reckon.

What we need now is UnquietDad and his diagrams I think...

TheFallenMadonna · 04/01/2010 10:17

x-posts.

That last one - well quite

Scientists do argue that perople are predisposed to a 'belief' system, it's genetic, I suppose we could sit here and go through the rational of the dat but I for one am not qualified to do that as you would also need to argue the mental capacity verses such a gene it woulkd make quite a long laborious thread and quite off topic.

Scientists?

atlantis · 04/01/2010 10:19

"'Large parts of the academic community take the position that, while racial categories may be marked by sets of common phenotypic or genotypic traits, the popular idea of "race" is a social construct without base in scientific fact.[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] Nonetheless, when divorced from its popular connotations, the concept of race may be useful. According to forensic anthropologist George W. Gill, blanket "race denial" not only contradicts biological evidence, but may stem from "politically motivated censorship" in the belief that "race promotes racism".[4]'"

ahh, I see you have already started.

TheFallenMadonna · 04/01/2010 10:19

I know. I am dreadful for going off topic. Sorry.

littleducks · 04/01/2010 10:21

well tbh daftpink, i doubt there would be many antifascist protestors there considering Choudary isnt a fascist

interesting about the deprting idea too, that Lebanon already has deported him

"considering Choudary isnt a fascist"

depending on your definition.

the term Islamofascism to describe Islamism and militant Islam.

the word fascist is intended to mean "oppressive", "intolerant", "chauvinist", "genocidal", "dictatorial", "racist", or "aggressive"

I think that about covers mr Choudary.

daftpunk · 04/01/2010 10:44

littleducks...I doubt there will be many protestors at all....because the liberals of this country will allow "freedom of speech" to anyone as long as they're not the BNP

...because the BNP are white.

where are all the people who were on the BNP threads saying how terrible it was that NG was allowed on question time...? those threads got to almost aa 1000 posts...

why arn't they on this thread.....??

daftpunk · 04/01/2010 10:45

because they're full of fucking shit

But it's true Riven....

and this thread is 100% proof of it...

Muslim extremists full of hate want to march through a town where our dead soldiers are brought home...and this thread has struggled to get past 100 posts....

says it all..

True, I posted on mn last night, 1st time since before christmas...my new years resolution is cut down the time I spend on here, it's only habit that keeps me on here...and the fact that i'm a sad loser with no mates..

happy new year to you Riven...(sorry, forgot my manners)

atlantis · 04/01/2010 11:45

"this thread has struggled to get past 100 posts.."

and quite a few of those posts were aimed at me in a subtle version of 'your a racist because you want to deport people'.

I'm English and I think this country sucks (now), I would love to be deported to the country of my choice, it will save me the cost of emigrating.

I wouldn't feel the need to emigrate if this country got a backbone and stod up against people like Choudray and groups like Islam4uk, if we weren't so downtrodden and told what to think and do and say.

I vote conservative (yes, boo, I know dear guardian readers) but I can understand why 'ordinary' people are voting BNP, if that makes me a closet racist so be it.

daftpunk · 04/01/2010 11:48

I read all your posts atlantis...i'm afraid you are a hero of mine....

I'm a BNP supporter, I know you're not....but at least you understand why people have turned to them...

littleducks · 04/01/2010 11:52

well it is enlightening to see peoples feelings in things like this, maybe i should start outting money into an emigration fund.....dont have a clue where would go tbh, while Iran would be a good choice I have a feeling that we would then end up bombed by UK/US in a few years time.....are there any unihabitated desert island left out there?
