Danyl Johnson on X Factor.

I just don't get why people have such a downer on Danyl Johnson, making him out to be hugely cocky and overconfident. He is one of the best singers on the show.
Reading the paper this morning, there seems to be a feeling of satisfaction that he got what he deserved.
He has consistently performed well, and I just don't get why the media want to give him such a hard time. He is a nice lad who lives in my village near Reading, and is getting all this stuff written about how awful he is. My DH and DD1 met him at the rugby a few weeks ago and he was absolutely lovely, not diva-like at all. DD1 went all girly and star-struck, and lost the power of speech. He was SO kind, he told her not to be shy, and they had a nice little chat. My DH chatted to him too, and says he was a really nice guy.
I just think its really unfair the way he is being portrayed.
And Cheryl and that whole deadlock business, I've gone right off her now. Used to think she was nice.
Sorry for the rant, don't know what came over me

Nappyzone - Darius is a blast from the past.

Danyl should try not to take all this criticism to heart...do you remember how everyone hated Darius the first time round?

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 26/10/2009 19:43

He is far too big for his boots and is very smug IMVHO.

Herbietea - could you or someone who agrees with this statement clarify why you say this. I genuinely don't understand what he has done or said that makes people think this.

donnie · 26/10/2009 20:14

agree with herbietea - he is uber smug and I can't bear him. All my x factor watching friends (saddo emoticon) agree he is just dire. All those ridiculous vocal histrionics and chucking the mic up in the air like he's Roger bloody Daltry or summat....just can't bear him, such a creep!!so up himself!!!!

eggshapedbanana · 26/10/2009 20:27

Well done donnie, exactly what I was trying to say earlier, but phrased so much better.

abitpearshaped · 26/10/2009 20:48

He really isn't smug or arrogant. He's a nice guy, who is very talented, but he is getting a lot of bad press, based on some of the judges making comments about him being too cocky. Usually they are having a go at contestants not being confident enough. And no, I'm not his mum. It just takes a very patient person to get through my dd's shyness, and he did it. He was so lovely to her, she said it was one of the best days of her life. Now I do feel cross when I hear people slagging him off.
Sorry, maybe it is my maternal instincts coming out.

Disclaimer - I am no relation or friend!

I love Danyl. I agree he's been getting such a rough time from the press lately. I can't believe he was in the bottom two either.

It really annoys me actually when he is called "smug" - how do you know? What has he actually said - or done - on the x factor that makes you think that? Not including the press stories as we all know most of those are drivel or wildly exaggerated anyway.

And as for the rude comments about his mouth/tongue - words fail me.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 27/10/2009 10:48

Danyl may have a fantastic voice but he has no likeabilty factor which is why the public aren't voting for him.

AngryFromManchester · 27/10/2009 10:51

after the x factor they all get spat out anyway

it is all part of simon cowells freak show

he promises these people the world and the next you know they are opening up a new branch of some local vetenary practice

Rindercella · 27/10/2009 10:54

kidcreole, are you Louis Walsh by any chance?

Nancy66 · 27/10/2009 11:02

I think Danyl is perfectly likeable - he just has a brain and a few independent thoughts unlike some of the other contestants.

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 27/10/2009 11:06

No I'm not Louis I'm Louise....Louise Walsh his love child in a past heterosexual life .
it's true though...if were liked he wouldn't have been in the bottom two.

Chickenshavenolips · 27/10/2009 11:13

He is by far the best performer on the show. The guy owns the stage. Is his stage confidence what people are percieving as smugness? If so, I'd much rather watch a true showman on stage than a hopeless wannabe. Most decent performers are super confident.

TrickOrNinks · 27/10/2009 11:35

See I think he looks the type to throw a proper foot-stamping tantrum off-stage and away from fans but obviously I have no evidence for this.

But then I never really thought that Madonna was a really lovely person when I was going out and buying her records years ago.

I did think Michael Jackson was though

braveandcrazy · 27/10/2009 12:42

I blame the camera angles for being able to see down his gullet when he sings, I'd rather not see that! I don't usually vote i don't know about you lot but I think we should get on the phone next sat as there seems to be a few supporters on here. Anyone going to join me?

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 12:54

I think Louis was right about the lack of likeability factor, he may well be a lovely person in RL but I don't at all gel with his stage presence.

And that's what people are going on when they vote. Most people are not great judges of the singing, let's be honest and not wildly interested in voting in who they think sings best. Maybe that's some part of it but they vote for who they like to watch.

I agree totally with others who say the way Simon speaks up for Danyl is often so unpleasant that it almost provokes you into not wanting Danyl to win. I don't dislike him but I don't like his performances. Never liked any of them. To me it's all stagecoach for grown-ups.

CybilWrites · 27/10/2009 12:59

he seems AFR more likeable in this performance...without his mentors interference

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 13:00
  • and of course you can feel all maternal on his behalf!

When everyone is knocking into twit and twat, I feel a bit maternal about them. Really just two goofy lads from Dubline taking the p*

It#s all a bit like gladiators in the arena and we the people get to put our thumbs up or down. I feel sorry for the younger ones who may not really have understood what they're getting into and that it is not about the best contestant winning. Older ones like Danyl who understand that better and know quite well what they're getting into, do it I think reasoning that this gives them a chance to make a name for themselves. I don't think they genuinely assume that ifthey sing/perform best they'll also win.

CybilWrites · 27/10/2009 13:00

note louis pre-eyelift too

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 13:02

when I have time I'll google for this absolute nincompoop (you will not believe your eyes or ears) who won a programme like this in Germany. Later, off now.

Compared to that character, John and Edward are talented. I kid you not.

abitpearshaped · 27/10/2009 13:09

Still really cross with Cheryl. DD (10) has decided not to use her birthday money to buy Cheryl's CD now, after Sunday's show, and she really liked Cheryl before. She bought Alexandra's instead.
Cheryl, you lost a sale! (do you think she would be bovvered?)

what has cheryl done?

(my friend fitted and made a dress for herm once, she said she is tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny)

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 16:20

[ here]]
I meant this guy on German tv, but I see he actually came 3rd. It was as bit like Jand E, every week he got slated for not being able to sing and every week he got voted back in.

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 16:22

here

ZZZenAgain · 27/10/2009 16:25

I think the tv audience take a kind of perverse pleasure in voting people back in who just can't sing or who the judges definitely don't want there

abitpearshaped · 27/10/2009 17:39

Do you think that we just don't like people "getting ideas above their station" and like to knock people down a peg or two.
All the negative comments about Danyl in the press seem to about his being too confident, or cocky, or having a big tongue(!) and just that he is apparently a nasty piece of work. The big tongue he cannot help, but the other stuff is just people (us) being manipulated by the meeja and the judges. There is no actual evidence of his being this complete diva he is made out to be. Character assassination IMO
The guy is obviously talented, as are others in the show, but he is being treated very unfairly. And I'm not his mum.
