suprised as this will affect us
wonder if they will all be allowed over here now.
can we keep taking all these people, considering the goverment is talking about cutting education due to lack of money. it isn't like they are fleeing a war torn country.

What should be happening is a Europe wide agreement. Anyone seeking asylum must register in the first country they reach, then each EU country has to take their fair share. Places like this "jungle" should not be permitted to exist, they are not seeking asylum they are illegal immigrants. Simple as.

And what is all this about 150? There were 4,500 in that place. I have heard some of them interviewed and the attitude is that they are coming here and we should take care of them because they are owed it. The British Empire was a century ago, get over it and until it is prevented from being an excuse to berate ourselves as a country then there is no moving forward.

yes Tnog...i'm from a family of Irish immigrants

scaryteacher · 25/09/2009 09:09

Your relatives are right Riven - over the Tamar is 'up country'. Mebyon Kernow want self government for Cornwall - the Scots and Welsh have devolution, why can't the Cornish? Freedom for Cornwall!!!

The UK is not the only nation in Afghanistan - France, Germany and Denmark are there as well as the US, Australia and Canada. It is a NATO coalition. There are 26 nations who are in NATO. Therefore, the other nations should also take some of the immigrants, as they also have troops there.

Tn0g · 25/09/2009 09:34

Very good articles, Riven.

Interesting also that the child of immigrants is saying, no more to be allowed in, close the door and bolt it shut because we can't cope and sustain.

An awful lot of money goes UNclaimed in benefits in the UK and Ireland, schools and hospitals are creaking along because successive goverments chip away at them, knowing that the staff will continue giving their all and the money NOT spent on these vital services can be spent elsewhere...like on weaponary and war.

Also in the case of healthcare the US system is being phased in, pay up for that GP visit/hospital stay or you err...die?

Power and greed is the problem which is difficult to deal with and sort out, depressing and ongoing.

But the day I don't have empathy and outrage at seeing poverty and genocide and general inhumanity toward my fellow man and woman and an inability at seeing beyond the lies and statistics and scare-mongering and general misplaced blame for a country's ills will be a very sad day.

daftpunk · 25/09/2009 09:45

yes Tnog, as a child of immigrants that's exactly what i'm saying...when my parents came to this country there was plenty of work...my parents have never claimed a penny in benefits, they didn't come here to sit on their arses and milk the benefit system..they came here to work and contribute to society in a positive way....they encountered racism when they arrived...trying to rent a property was hard. houses would have signs in the windows "no blacks or irish"....that was the 50's for you!

Tn0g · 25/09/2009 09:50

You really confuse me, DP.

Genuinely.

You're the child of immigrants yet you'd vote UKIP.

Your parents best start packing those suitcases if the UKIP get into power.

Tn0g · 25/09/2009 09:53

Have to go walk the dog and the meet my Polish friend.

She has a degree but works in Aldi and Costa Coffee and cleans an office too.

lazy?

scrounger?

pofacedandproud · 25/09/2009 10:05

So hang on dp you have no problem with immigrants who come here and work hard?

Bleh · 25/09/2009 10:17

So DP, you're saying that your parents came here and worked hard, never claimed benefit and so on, but you don't think that maybe the new wave of immigrants think in the same way?

I'm an immigrant. Have worked my a*se off since moving to this country, taking crappy jobs that a lot of natives would turn their nose up at. I have never claimed benefit, never intend to. My parents, even when they were entitled to it due to unemployment refused to, but lived off savings instead.

Bleh · 25/09/2009 10:20

And actually, some relatives of mine left the UK in the late 1940s because there were absolutely no jobs; couldn't afford to live on the salary that they were earning. Rationing lasted into the 1950s, so I don't think that when your parents came over in the 1950s (obviously depending on when they arrived) the UK was a booming economy with millions of jobs.

pofacedandproud · 25/09/2009 10:26

Seeing as British people often refuse to do the jobs that actually need doing [thinking of care homes, hospital cleaners, bus drivers in some areas, farm workers, etc] who exactly is going to do these jobs if the immigrants go back 'home'?

daftpunk · 25/09/2009 10:38

yep..will vote UKIP, because i was born in London...i'm English and very patriotic...

daftpunk · 25/09/2009 10:40

although patriotic is now known as racist

pofacedandproud · 25/09/2009 10:41

well if they government had implemented the ideas you advocate you wouldn't have been born in London, would you dp?

southeastastra · 25/09/2009 10:43

so apart from dp's 'patriotic' views does anyone know what's happening to the afghans now?

daftpunk · 25/09/2009 10:51

pfap; different world now...my parents didn't expect laws to be changed for them or anything like that...they were grateful to be here....all immigrants we let in should swear allegiance to the UK, don't come here and carry on supporting the taliban, or any other terrorist organisation.

donnie · 25/09/2009 10:53

well clearly you are unable to distinguish between the two word daftpunk. How gloriously ironic - yet also sad - that you , as the child of immigrants, should hold racist views.

And if you want any verification of the information I have provided about Afghanistan then feel free to read the New Statesman or Guardian websites. Check out Amnesty as well if you really want to know what daily life is like for the people there. But I suspect that actually you couldn't give a shit.

MillyMollyMoo · 25/09/2009 11:40

"Seeing as British people often refuse to do the jobs that actually need doing [thinking of care homes, hospital cleaners, bus drivers in some areas, farm workers, etc] who exactly is going to do these jobs if the immigrants go back 'home'?"

If British people weren't being handed out benefits hand over fist then they would bloody well have to do those jobs wouldn't they ?
We've been here before in the 50's and it worked well with the first generation of hard working immigrants who were grateful of the opportunity however it didn't last long did it, look at the crime figures.
