suprised as this will affect us
wonder if they will all be allowed over here now.
can we keep taking all these people, considering the goverment is talking about cutting education due to lack of money. it isn't like they are fleeing a war torn country.

Of course the UK has massive issues with the able bodied unemployed which needs addressing but which genius thought to themselves we'll pay for the current UK population to sit on their arses, breeding feral kids and getting fatter with all the health issues associated and import the working population who will not spend their money within the UK, because they aren't stupid enough to spend 1/2 million on tiny plot of land, but they'll send their money acquired one way or another out of our econmony.

edam · 24/09/2009 15:46

Actually re. the NHS, I've been very surprised recently by the number of docs I talk to - nice guys, not foaming at the mouth Norman Tebbits - who used to think we should treat anyone who turned up at a hospital or GP surgery out of common decency, no matter what their nationality or residence status but have changed their minds.

They say it's just getting too much - health tourists are a real drain on the NHS. People who should pay a bill because they aren't actually entitled to NHS care but disappear without handing over the money and can't be traced.

Not sure what the answer is, tbh. Even if you reject the 'common humanity dicates someone in need is treated' argument, how on earth would you deal with people who come from outside the UK/EU who should pay but don't? How would you stop them coming or make them pay?

Anniek · 24/09/2009 16:58

DP

Going to presume that comment is addressed to me?

It is naive to think there is only one problem in this country. I actually agree that immigration needs to be reviewed, but so does the benefit system as a whole, simple fact.

We cannot continue to have 1 person put in to the system to have 2 take out of it! Whether that is due to immigration or lack of interest in employment.

But I would like to know exact figures, as I'm happy to admit, I'm probably reacting to headlines, and the facts may not back those up.

OrangeFish · 24/09/2009 17:06

Edam, I'm not sure about health tourist because I don't know any, but as far as I'm concerned, we are asked for proof of residence every time we try to get to A&E or walking centre, I guess because of our mediterranean looks.

As a European Community member you can access emergency health services all around the countries member of the European Union as long as you present a EHIC card.

IME, no card, no service, at least not a free one. And you can only get those cards if you are registered with a surgery.

scaryteacher · 24/09/2009 17:09

Not true; I am not registered with a surgery in the UK, and haven't been since 2006, but I still have and have renewed my EHIC. It's to do with your NI number, not your medical registration.

OrangeFish · 24/09/2009 17:23

Thanks, guess that I got that wrong, but how many illegal immigrants do have a NI number?

Bleh · 24/09/2009 17:32

Man, I was a LEGAL immigrant with a British passport and it took an arm, a leg and large chunks of my sanity to get an NI number. You have to wait months to get an appointment, and even if you bring all the required documents, they still go "but you haven't brought x" "But on the list you sent it said y would be accepted as an alternative" "No. You need x. Reschedule - next appointment is available in 2035".

OrangeFish · 24/09/2009 17:34

...and that if you are lucky to get someone to pick up the phone and log your application...

donnie · 24/09/2009 18:43

OK daftpunk two questions for you :

1 - what do you mean by your reference to Edgeware Road being like Beirut?

2 - your comment about "the attitudes alot (sic) of these immigrants have towards women...the way they treat women in Afghanistan...and you feel sorry for them?"

what do you mean by that? are you saying that you wouldn't mind immigrants from some countries but not others ? if so, which ones? or could there possibly be a hint of something anti Islamic in that comment? pray elaborate.

And if you think Taleban has something to do with these attitudes you'd be right. But do you also know that currently around 80% of the Afghan population supports Taleban because they hate the Occupying forces more than they hate Taleban. So actually we, the UK can shoulder some culpability in the increased influence and power of Taleban. So perhaps we have a moral duty to accept refugees from Afghanistan. Do you get it?

Now ask yourself - where would you rather live - the UK or Afghanistan? and why?

Christ why am I even bothering. The dimwittery on this thread is making me weep.

donnie · 24/09/2009 18:46

btw pofacedandproud - I agree with your comment on big fat tax avoiders all caning it in Monaco and other such locations. I noticed noone seemed able to respond to my comment on the thousands of empty properties across the UK owned by rich multi-landlords. Personally I think squatters should move in to every single bloody one.

2shoes · 24/09/2009 18:57

donnie, that doesn't make sense, yous say they hat the occupying forces, if so why do they want to come here if they hate our forces??
genuine question.
as for the dimwittery comment, do you always attack people who don't agree with you.
as I have been told on numerous occasions on mn,just because you don't agree with someones opinion you can't atop them airing it.

donnie;

    • just one of the shops along the Edgware rd...another one here....and

here......

pofacedandproud · 24/09/2009 19:01

well I know someone who lost his 19 year old son because the NHS refused to do heart surgery that couldn't be done in his own country [the father was working legitimately here] So health tourism a nice idea but if it always worked his son might still be alive.

donnie · 24/09/2009 19:04

oh I see daftpunk. So it is an anti islamic thing then. As I suspected.

daftpunk · 24/09/2009 19:09

you asked me a question, i answered it...

perhaps you'd like to answer 2shoes question....if afghans hate us so much...why do they want to live here..?

daftpunk · 24/09/2009 19:13

oh and btw.....i'd love squatters to move into an empty propert next to you....sure you'd love it.

donnie · 24/09/2009 19:16

errrr....maybe because they don't like living in Afghanistan where life expectancy is scandalously short and around 98% of GDP is heroin- sorry, are we a bit slow today? where would you like them to go?

do you object to Lebanese restaurants then? I notice you are avoiding my questions daftpunk. Do you have a problem with the Islamic bank on the Edgeware Road? you still haven't cleared that one up.

donnie · 24/09/2009 19:19

I speak as an ex squatter daftpunk - and great years they were too. maybe you think they are all filthy foreigners , eh?

i have no problem with the Islamic bank on the Edgware road...just like i have no problem with paddy power the Irish bookmakers, also on the Edgware rd....or the Royal Bank of Scotland......we are a very diverse country, which is why, when i walk around parts of London i don't feel like i'm actually in London....not saying that's a bad thing...but i think we've done our bit...don't you..?

however,...we can't keep taking more and more immigrants...we just don't have the room or money....what is it you don't get..?

where would i like them to go...?

Turkey....what's wrong with Turkey..?

mehdismummy · 24/09/2009 19:34

i LOVE that restuarant down edgeware road too and i find it very friendly there too.

mehdismummy · 24/09/2009 19:39
