"on mumsnet this week" in the Mail. Is this a new thing

1009 replies

jujumaman · 13/08/2009 10:32

Came across this this morning when I should have been working

Is this a new weekly rip-off by the Mail? Or has it been going on for months and I'm behind the times as usual

I'm not quite as virulently anti the Mail as mnetters, find it silly rather than the end of civilisation as we know it. But still ...

OP posts:

DP I think you are Mrs Bob Crowe

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:05

How do you know though Nancy? There's pictures on profiles, areas where people live, birthdays are put on threads, number/ages of children, jobs that people have, even details about extended families. What's going to stop someone?? This info may not be on one page but it's all here, along with where people are going on holiday, when they are going to the cinema and what they are going to watch.

oopsagain · 14/08/2009 00:06

Lady GP- that's fair enough, but waht when posters have left but obviously only cod took all her posts with her... their posts will still be here?

Rindercella · 14/08/2009 00:07

The thing is Nancy, some of us do post some pretty personal things on here, where the circumstances could identify us in RL. I have just had a couple of posts deleted because of this - the fall out would potentially be huge and very stressful if the subject of my posts were to ever happen upon the scenario printed in the DM (which would be far more likely to do than to find it on MN).

MN is fantastic at providing help and support when people are feeling vulnerable. It is not particularly in their interests to have their problems aired in the national press.

daftpunk · 14/08/2009 00:08

lol nancy...saw him tonight backing his workers.....GO BOB.....i love him.

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:09

Quite right Rindercella.

Nancy66 · 14/08/2009 00:11

fluffy - as has already been said, it is the responsibility of the poster not to put themselves at risk/in danger. Anybody that posts pictures of their kids together with identifying information on an internet forum - when they want to remain anonymous - is bonkers.

Rindercella - people do post personal things, I accept that. but my understanding is the DM have given an undertaking not to use such threads.

let's wait and see if they stick to that rather than all this doom and gloom prediction of what might happen if they don't.

Nancy66 · 14/08/2009 00:12

DP that's why I think you're his woman, only she could love him....

thumbwitch · 14/08/2009 00:14

what a lazy-arsed bunch of slow-witted journos they are now! DM = expected (have v. v. low opinion of shite rag) but am disappointed in Indy. LAZY LAZY LAZY.

IF they have to lift convos off MN because they can't be arsed to do any actual work themselves, then the very LEAST they could do is "anonymise" (ugh) the posters. Maybe by just reducing their names to a couple of initials.

MNHQ - can you really not do anything about it? Tis outrageous. Am disgusted and for Thunderduck and Sweetness as well.

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:15

But the DM have used posters names Nancy, albeit the wrong ones. It is the responsibility of the poster, however, are you going to be the one who tells them not to give out too many details when their partner has just thumped them and they need help? Some people on here don't give out too many details but over time, little bits add up.

PeachyAsksIfDMPeepsSmellOfWee · 14/08/2009 00:15

The most memorable and necessaryt hreads on here have been written through veils of tears

lost children, dead partners, suicidal fear....

Of course people in that situation don't think the implications through absed on a disclaimer! My thread - to- remember in that bunch is long gone and thankfully ahd a happy ending, but heck MN was the only thing there as I thought my life collapsed about me. With good reason i thought dh was dead.

There was always a chance some passing journo would pick things up, now we know someone is regualrly trawling MN looking for it. I will post here but find secure palces for anything that matters. As will amny, and those threads have been the bonding part of MN.

I presume this si the end of the Christmas thinga s well, who'd want thier neediness publsihed?

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:16

Hello Thum dear, how's the packing going? (tis the bunny).

oopsagain · 14/08/2009 00:16

oh, ffs i give up

there is a procincple at stake and also people have used this site in different ways, some more circumspect and some less circumspect.

As the site has grown ver the years soemthing like this was boud to happen, but i suppose most people (or amybe just me) felt that Mn wouldn't sanction it...as it seemd that they owned our posts...

just because it doesn't matter to some posters, it doesn't mena that other posters have to have the same opinion... that is the point of debate FFS.

and thanks for pointing out the bleedin' obvious , DP.

now nip along to the relatiobnship boards and let them know that some journo is going to be along next week to print all their stuff in "nuts" and see what happens

Nancy66 · 14/08/2009 00:16

if it was the victim of domestic violence then yes i would warn her not to give out personal details - would be foolish not to.

they have used NICKNAMES not real names.

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:17

Time for a bum sex thread or three oopsagain.

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:20

Yes, they do give out nicknames, they are not always changed though, their posting history along with alot of details about them is at the top of the screen. As I've said (three times or four?), little tiny bits if info make alot. It's not rocket science.

daftpunk · 14/08/2009 00:22

like i said nancy....i don't give too much away about my private life....

oopsagain.....if i've pointed out the bleedin obvious....why did i have to point it out?.....you didn't seem to get it.

Thunderduck · 14/08/2009 00:22

Off topic but why didn't anyone tell me that Gerard Butler is on the television?

Nancy66 · 14/08/2009 00:23

Yes, I know how it works. I'm just saying that suggesting that some lunatic is going to take a shine to you based on some dullard thread about fake tan, then read every spit and cough you've ever written on MN, then form a profile and then attempt to find out your real life identity is....mental.

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:23

who's Gerard Butler?

oopsagain · 14/08/2009 00:23

BUT NANCY66, SOMETIMES PEOPLE POST STUFF THAT IDNETIFIES THEM BECUSE OF THE SITUATION, NOT THEIR NAME!!!!

sorry, i jsuthad to say that

what happens is stressed and upset people don't always think straight and people on threads suggest the ask posts to be delted and then Mn dies.
it happens all the time...

But if somebody is trawling the boads for stuff for a column and they pick up the situation, it doesnt matter what the poster's name is FFS, the things they've said can make them instantly idnetifyable to the other people involved..
and the poster isn't expecting them to be on MN, but the information then goes into a more public domain more likely to be read by other people/

OMG somebody help me out!!!!

LeninGrad · 14/08/2009 00:23

This reply has been deleted

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

oopsagain · 14/08/2009 00:24

It's not the random loonies people are worried about- it's the ones they know!!!

FluffySaysTheDailyMailsCrap · 14/08/2009 00:25

Well, there's alot of mental people out there Nancy.

Anyway, I don't give up my valuable drinking time to support people on here so it can end up in a newspaper by some twerp that can't do her own research for an article and has to rely on plagerism.

Thunderduck · 14/08/2009 00:26

Who is Gerard Butler? You have to ask?

He's an actor. Scottish and rather gorgeous. HHe's been in a number of films. 300,Phantom Of The Opera,PS.I Love You etc.
