Of course it was in the Sun

I do not want to get in to the benefit angle at all, I just wonder if anyone else has any ideas about how to get the contraception message through to girls? I mean one of these kids was PG 3 times prior to this at under 16! Their mother blames the schools for not starting sex ed early enough.

What do you think?

at the tender age of 12 i was still...playing, with sindy dolls and dress up, or out on my bike....hated boys...yuk!

my cousin is 11 and i can not even begin to imagine her having sex!!!!

it disgusts me, how they can hold their heads up high i will never know.

my dd1 is nearly 6, to think in another 6 years from now she could be pregnant...over my dead body!

its all about how these kids are bought up in my opinion.

Scary! And to blame the school is laughable.... if it wasn't so tragic.

In my group of friends at school there was a race against time to not be the last to lose our virginity, but we were 14/15 by the time that became a petty issue! I lost mine 4 mths before I turned 16, to my boyfriend of 3 months. BUT the majority of us went on the pill as a matter of course!!! It was almost the 'done thing'.... "which pill are you on?" "doesn't that make your boobs hurt?"....and so on... our lunchtime conversations were dominated by contraceptive pill horror/success stories!

Fair enough.... we weren't really that keen on condoms, which was stupid. But we really were thinking purely about not getting pregnant!

don't think it is that unbelievable many young girls openly admit they want the baby benefits flat etc

I've known a few teenage single mums who got pregnant on purpose to get their own flat! It's not uncommon unfortunately!

I agree with you giraffski, and even if someone did have a baby for the benefits of extra benefits (iyswim) then God only knows how bleak and miserable their lives were beforehand......

fastasleep · 23/05/2005 12:09

Well I knew of a few who were fed up of their parents, because they were at that age when everyone's fed up of their parents! And decided that they'd rather be all grown up and have their own flat... it always ended in tears though.

Newsreader on ITV just now...

"Is the education system failing our teenage girls SO much that they are getting pregnant"

After having read this thread I cannot believe that this is the spin that the news is going to put on this story... Hopefully not - but that's how it came across just now... Will go and listen to it I think...

I think this is so sad, these girls are only babies themselves. How could sex education be to blame? Did the mother not step in when her 16 year old was having m/c and a abortion.
This mother should be locked up for what she let happen. 12 years old and having to give birth! is this the latest trend!

Gwenick · 23/05/2005 12:13

sorry just noticed the names of the babies

"Amani, T-Jay and Lita"

fastasleep · 23/05/2005 12:15

The school system completely failed me, and my mum helped by being completely mad lol... but I waited until I was 16 and married before I started popping them out

noddyholder · 23/05/2005 12:16

gwenick I noticed that too It does make you wonder how seriously they take motherhood

Oh come on I've met many a 20 something mum with children named 'keanu' 'gemini and leo' ....'satsuma' etc.

Gwenick · 23/05/2005 12:18

noddy - I know lots of people with 'odd' (well what I consider odd) names for babies - but they all gave some consideration not only to the baby name - but also to the prospect of becoming mothers..........as someone else metioned "CHAV" springs to mind

moondog · 23/05/2005 12:19

Oh yes,the names are classic!

fastasleep · 23/05/2005 12:20

I was in pubs being chatted up by barmen at the age of twelve... I think it depends on how protective the parents are.. isn't it the parents job to tell their children about sex and contraception and AIDS though? She can't blame it on schools!

colditz · 23/05/2005 12:21

Peopl do though. I know girls who openly admitted having a baby to get a house, then having another baby to get more benefits! These girls do exist, why does nobody believe it? It is more common than you would realise. I know a woman with 8 kids, she has never had a job, and never had a partner, and doesn't see why either would be necessary to a happy life.

I know so many girls under 19 who have a baby, and as soon as the are housed they start trying to get pregnant again. Everyone makes a fuss of you when you're pregnant, and in their eyes that is better than being regarded as scum by society.

Gwenick · 23/05/2005 12:21

"The sisters feature in the BBC3 series Desperate Midwives: The real truth about childbirth, starting from 9pm on Monday."

Just seen this on the BBC

Gwenick · 23/05/2005 12:23

colditz - yes it DOES happen - but those girls that do it ARE in the minority - once found an excellent (UK) website that showed the 'statstics' and it's only because the media portrays them so often (and because those few that do like to 'brag' about it - as opposed to those that work their butts off) that we are led to 'believe' it's the majority

fastasleep · 23/05/2005 12:23

I knew loooads of pot-headed teenage and preteen even girls who got pregnant for a house I think my old friend Ros is on her 3rd now, maybe 4th.... you can't say that's not for benefits!!
