Of course it was in the Sun

I do not want to get in to the benefit angle at all, I just wonder if anyone else has any ideas about how to get the contraception message through to girls? I mean one of these kids was PG 3 times prior to this at under 16! Their mother blames the schools for not starting sex ed early enough.

What do you think?

gwenick it's not the media I'm talking about, I could name 4 or 5 girls that I know personally. Same goes for the one with 8 kids, she is not a news story I read, I know the woman!

Auntfanny · 23/05/2005 12:25

i have a baby and im 18 and i did not have him to get benifits he was a planned baby with my partner of 4 years we have got a concil house a limited beifits but my partner does have a good job and pays tax like everyone else so we dont all do it!!!!! we are trying for another but not to get more benifits as we have enough money as it is and have already turned down some benifits as we didnt need them, but there are girls out there who do it, i know 2 girls who have had kids to get houses off the council its not right as there are families who need the houses more.

Toothache · 23/05/2005 12:25

Girrafski - I think the point is that some girls do this thinking it's an easy way to get a flat! They really don't undertand how difficult it is to live like that..... until it's too late.

moondog · 23/05/2005 12:26

Even so,says a lot about options available for them doesn't it?
Who would choose to have a child with no man around and very little money????

colditz · 23/05/2005 12:29

Girls whose only other option is factory or cleaning work would. I know what I would rather be doing.

Flum · 23/05/2005 12:29

Big photo in the Mail too, Wee slappers.

Auntfanny · 23/05/2005 12:29

i also know girls who have babies because they like the idea of dressing them up in cute clothes and buying the nice toys ect they often dont think of the other aspects like costs, dirty nappies, child birth, night time waking ect they have a kind of idelistic view that baies are all fun and games thought there not!

Exactly, colditz. It's the same with people expressing surprise at the fact that semi feral urban proles steal, cheat, and lie. Fgs, how else are they going to aqcuire the stuff they (think they) want????

Flum · 23/05/2005 12:31

I know NIKE trainers - pulllease !!!!!!!!

Auntfanny · 23/05/2005 12:31

i hate being on beniffits and as soon as ds is at school i will be working full time to get off them!

Flum · 23/05/2005 12:34

I don't care how many benefits they get. They are welcome to them. I still wouldn't step into their miserable lives for a moment.

Even if they have got Nike trainers

Flum · 23/05/2005 12:35

Noone likes being on benefits. Difference is some just accept it as the situation and some - like you AuntFanny look to the future. And even having a positive outlook will afford your family a better future.

Auntfanny · 23/05/2005 12:39

i have accepted that we need a small amount of benifit (and i mean small) all our wages and child benifit go on rent, council tax bills ect we just have a small tax credit award that goes on food ect, but like you say i want to work so i dont have to have them at all but i dont want ds to be raised by a childminder so i am staying at home untill hes at school, i dont think its wrong to be on benifits but i think if you can stop having them its best to make your money by hard work.

Flum · 23/05/2005 12:40

Umm did you see the pic. Did you see the middle ones stretch marks OMG her tummy looked like someone had had a go with a potato peeler. And yet still she was wearing a cropped top.

How can they be expected to make sensible lifestyle judgements when they cannot even make sensible fashion choices!!

That is almost more of a worry.

beatie · 23/05/2005 12:41

I suspect that this happens a lot in the same families and it doesn't make headline news. Wasn;t there a programme on about teen pregnancy, perhaps a year ago, and there were two sisters age 14 and 15 competing to see who could get pregnant first.

Babies are the only things that give these girls status, so, if their sister or friend has one, they are likely to want one too.

I agree with MP - I don't believe there are that many accidental teen pregnancies. I believe there are a lot of pre-meditated teen pregnancies.

I don't know what the solution is though. I wonder if those benefit amounts are accurate - the amounts do sound excessive? Perhaps more babies should be adopted out to childless couples() and that would start to have a knock on effect on the types of teenagers who purposely get pregnant because they want a baby to play with. It would be unfortunate, however, to penalise those teenagers who do accidentally get pregnant and who aspire to study and work and look after their child.

Perhaps dads should be made to pay (why is this so imposible to achieve?) for the consequences of their few minutes of reckless fun so that they would start to take charge of contraception use to avoid being out of pocket (from salary or benefits) for the following 16 years of their life.

How do we start to give these types of teenage girls aspirations? When society doesn't even appear to respect the teaching profession anymore, how do you make young girls feel good about themselves if they are destined to work in a shop or factory. Doesn't everyone just want to be a footballers wife or a pop star these days?

Certainly, teacher and school bashing needs to be given a rest by the media. It must be so demoralising to educators to have to read this drivel time and time again. Teachers are NOT these kids' parents.

noddyholder · 23/05/2005 12:44

Agree that they all copy each other I see so many identikit teenage girls all dressed the same same hair etc and with babies All the babies are dressed in designer head to toe with jewellery and beautiful expensive buggies How do they do it?

JoolsToo · 23/05/2005 12:45

maybe they saw Lizzie Bardsley as a role model [rolls eyes]

colditz · 23/05/2005 12:49

It is not hard to live on £110 a week when your rent and council tax is paid for. What else is going out?

Food - £40 max for you and one child
Electric - £10
Gas - £10

This leaves £50, where does it go?

Tissy · 23/05/2005 12:50

yeah but,how can a 14 yo lad be made to pay up for the baby he's fathered, out of his paper round? Dreadful situation, don't know what the answer is.

Tissy - true, but he won't always be 14.

colditz · 23/05/2005 12:59

Travel expense? - Walk.
Clothes and shoes? - Charity shops
Water? - mine doesn't cost any more than £5 a week
TV licence - £3 a week
Toddler grroups? - Hardly a necessity, but even so, not likely to spend £40 a week on them, are we?

Auntfanny · 23/05/2005 12:59

if the father himself cant pay his family should at least do something to support the baby after all it tkaes two.
