If that's Hewlett then he is wanted by the police.

expatinscotland · 29/05/2009 13:56

He's wanted for questioning two child abuse cases from the 1970s.

He submitted DNA samples from Germany and says he'll cooperate with the McCann investigators as he has nothing to hide.

here

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 13:59

But that is why he is being named. Legally they can name him because he is wanted by police anyway. Otherwise they couldn't.

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 14:02

He may or may not be involved in the McCann case, but it is not unusual for people to be named if they are wanted for questioning. The British Police may not question him about the McCann case, but they do want to question him about the sex attacks.

At this stage they are not saying he did it, or even that he's an official suspect. In fact the detectives working for the McCanns have been very careful about what they say. The media however, are less careful. Everything done here is legal and above board.

noddyholder · 29/05/2009 14:02

I would be surprised if he was connected to her disappearance.I am sure if his alibi forn where he was had had any holes in it they would have detained him at the time as they would have been glad to have solved it quickly even just for teh sake of tourism in Portugal.Their own private policemen strongly believe the answer lies in the immediate vicinity so why they are in Germany is beyond me.New detectives usually go right back to the beginning

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 14:05

The detectives working for the McCanns have said all along that the answer lies in Portugal. They are in Germany to interview the man about discrepencies in his statements. They'd also like to speak to his wife. There is a certain urgency to speak to him before he changes his mind, which he has done twice, and before he dies.

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 14:06

They have also stressed that he is just one line of their enquiry. They have specifically NOT named him as a suspect. That is something the media have picked up on.

noddyholder · 29/05/2009 14:08

Their spokesman said on the BBc news a few nights ago 'He HAS information that we need.'Lets hope he does or he'll probably sue them.

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 14:11

I don't think he can sue them. If he doesn't agree to be questioned then they can't question him. Also, it's the papers he'd have to sue as the detectives have not named him a suspect.

Tamarto · 29/05/2009 14:11

LOL @ The discrepencies in a statement.

I believe they are clutching at straws in the hope they can raise more money to keep this gravy train flowing. And by that i am speaking about the PIs not the McCanns.

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 14:14

Not really Tamarto. He was questioned by Portugese Police at the time. He provided an alibi and wasn't questioned further. Now you have to wonder why, if he was an hour away from the resort, he was picked up by the police at all? If he was not involved, he may know something. He is a paedophile, he did abuse children, he may have contacts in the resort and have heard something.

As we are not in possession of his statement at the time, we don't know do we?

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 14:17

Besides, that little girl is out there somewhere, alive or dead. By keeping it in the media, however dreadful it is, means that it stays fresh in peoples minds. It's the only chance they have of finding her.

Someone, somewhere, knows what happened that night. Hopefully the more the case is in the media, the more pressure will be placed on them to reveal what they know.

noddyholder · 29/05/2009 14:18

Well they are saying he 'has' info not he might have.Agree re clutching at straws.I think they have latched onto another case with no real reason apart from it looks like they are doing something

Rhubarb · 29/05/2009 14:18

I'm afraid I have to go, children are now back from the park and I promised to spend time with them this afternoon.

noddyholder · 29/05/2009 14:21

There is a list of paedophiles who were in the area, they were all checked out according to GM.If they think no harm has come to her and there is every likelihood she is out there somewhere(as said on Oprah)then they are barking up the wrong tree with the paedophile stories as they aren't usually in the market for trafficking children for sale to nice families!

Tamarto · 29/05/2009 14:25

Because he was a known paedo in the area, simple really. No we do not know which is why my post started with i believe

Nothing wrong with keeping it in the media, i do have objections about how they go about doing that, just because it's a paedo this time doesn't mean it will be next time, we've seen that before!

If they know he has info then surely to be able to say that, they must know what the info is, therefore they have no real need to speak to him.

Portofino · 29/05/2009 15:03

I would imagine that they might think he has contacts in that part of Portugal, ones who aren't on any lists. As they knew where he was I can't see any reason at all in naming him publically - other than keeping the story in papers.

Oliveoil · 29/05/2009 15:12

oh my lord, MM and free range chicken arguements, it is like I have never left

NationalFlight · 29/05/2009 17:15

Oh hello OO!!

er - welcome back

Quattrocento · 30/05/2009 21:20

I agree wholeheartedly with Expat on this issue. I'm not sure why this subject is the one subject on MN where people seem to think it is okay to try to shut people up? This is a mild thread - no-one's gone body hunting or been otherwise odd, most of the posts have been sensible, so why try to stifle discussion?

drlove8 · 05/06/2009 19:28

it now seems that the paedo has "Admited to seeing Maddie" and wants paying for talking to the investigators.....this just gets worse and worse..

onagar · 05/06/2009 19:34

If that is true then I suspect that he has decided that if he is going to be stalked he may as well get something out of it. Also it might put them off completely if it's going to cost them money.

drlove8 · 05/06/2009 20:24

thats what i thought when i saw this.... an evil old git who is trying to gain out of this .but he only has weeks to live so why?

onagar · 05/06/2009 20:33

Well maybe the second reason. If they are stalking him while he is dying maybe he thinks they will leave him in peace if he asks for money.

If so it probably won't work. They have said they will still question him, but won't pay him any money. That suggests to me that they don't really think he is involved at all and it's just to keep it all ticking over nicely.

Next week I'm expecting that the owners of the restaurant will be suspects. I bet they served them really slowly to keep them all sitting there eating and drinking as long as possible.
