sorry, expat?s comment about the country going to the dogs and implying that I was a nutter for not caring about Diana etc (which was my fault for not making my point clearer int he first place) has just upset me. Honestly, I was not nearly this emotional with previous pregnancies.
Expat?s abrasive "say it how she thinks" posts usually get a wry smile out of me but not today. I think I had better finish my coffee and go get some fresh air.
What a crap start to the weekend!
Please, if any of you want to yell at me, could you hold fire till Monday when normal thickness of skin will hopefully be resumed and I should be able to take it a little better

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2009 10:53

don't fret, lemon.

weepootle · 28/02/2009 10:53

Truth hurts.

It's you lot who are coming on here being nasty to people who are just showing some compassion for a poor woman. The op did politely ask for you lot to refrain from posting.

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2009 10:54

missey, pristina, weepootle... do you think you can engage with the issues or is it just back-slapping and insults you can manage?

thanks Aitch

missyhissey · 28/02/2009 11:00

What are the issues then? Sympathy for a young woman who's dying?

There was plenty of that till the usual insults of 'competitive grieving' and 'creepy' started being thrown around.

weepootle · 28/02/2009 11:01

Sorry Aitch, are we not royal enough to have a controversial opinion?

weepootle · 28/02/2009 11:02

exactly, missy.

gawd, the issues are legion... grief: how people feel it, how they express it, how we feel we 'know' people on the television, how society has become so fragmented that we feel we 'know' tv celebs better than our friends and neighbours, whether it is appropriate to feel more sympathy for a young woman or a very young child etc etc etc. so many things to discuss.

i know Ria said that she would brook no opposition in her OP, but that doesn't actually mean she'll get none, on a web forum. and she's been posting here long enough to know that. plus she's big enough and clever enough to respond to opposition without resorting to slagging off swathes of posters and calling upon conspiracies.

things move on, on these threads. it's a conversation between a lot of people, not a maoist manifesto.

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2009 11:12

now that Issy, really is an excellent post.

i'm starting next week, i promise. it's been too slippy up here. (i tell myself).

bytheLiffey · 28/02/2009 11:19

I agree OP, I had a lovely childhood and I've made mistakes.

She looks healthy. It's ironic.

Pristina · 28/02/2009 11:19

For me, the "issue" is feeling sad for a young mother who's dying and wishing to share such feelings with like minded people.

Poppyscock · 28/02/2009 11:21

WeePootle your post was excellent and summed up exactly what is happening on MN at the moment, expect a backlash though as undoubtedly you will have touched a nerve with some people.

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2009 11:21

why? what is it you gain from sharing that? i mean, i get that you feel sadness (i also feel sad, i think, when i think about it. well maybe not sad so much as a wince of compassion) but i don't get what you recieve when you appear on a thread doing with other people doing the same? genuinely curious.

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2009 11:23

for the record, no nerves have been touched with me. i'm just a bit embarrassed for people who think like that, it's a bit school-y for adults.

Poppyscock · 28/02/2009 11:25

No need to feel embarrased for me Aitch. I can see perfectly well what weepootle is refering to and I am not all embarassed about that.

Its perfectly to clear to me so therfore must be clear to others, even if they choose not to admit it for their own reasons

missyhissey · 28/02/2009 11:26

That's an interesting post Issy, but I disagree with your point about Jade becoming 'almost a fictionalised character'

She's been heavily featured in the media, yes, but I think most people understand that she is a real person with real life issues not a character from a book/film.

And I don't think anyone is claiming to be grief stricken, just sympathetic.

AitchTwoOh · 28/02/2009 11:29

i don't think there's any question that she's a real person, missey, just that people are projecting onto her, or fictionalising feelings she may or may not have, because when it comes down to it they do NOT know her.

it may be that these big outpourings of sadness do fulfil some function for us, now that we don't really operate as close communities and attend mass funerals etc. that would be an interesting discussion, i think.

poppy, really... 'everyone can see what's happening' etc? and that doesn't sound like a fifteen-year-old?

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 28/02/2009 11:34

A passing compassion, that is exactly what it should be, passing.

Cracking post.

Poppyscock · 28/02/2009 11:34

No Aitch it doesn't.

Well done though for displaying the backlash I said would come, any more insults?
