So will a conference on anti-semitism really make any difference?

I know I've posted a few times about anti-semitism (and I'm sure some people think I should give it a rest) but it's something that's really worrying me at the moment. There's a conference - see here starting today to look at developing strategies to combat the rise in anti-semitism but will it really make any difference? The optimist in me hopes so, the cynic in me doubts it...

Very interesting Stewie. I was a bit confused about the faith/race thing so thanks for clearing that up.

Actually, it was me who posted that, not LisaLisa, Nizf.

And I already responded to that particular issue and corrected the misinterpretation.

LisaLisa, did, I think post the second statement, so she can respond to your response in turn, is she chooses.

Pristina, I don't think Hitler was a veggie becasue of ethical concerns about animal welfare

MiTochondrialEve · 23/02/2009 20:09

Maybe I should email Peacedove to come on here?

Shez - I have read that link with interest.
I would however also add, having been on the sharp end of threats by the vocal, extreme, muslim community...are you looking in your own backyard?
It cuts both ways.

sherazade · 23/02/2009 21:30

yes litchick, you are damn right.

recently in my area there was a certain muslim group putting flyers up pointing to their website. knowing they are an extremist bunch of nutjobs, i took down their posters as did other muslims i know and did report that illegal flyposting had occured on those streets.
nothing to do with semitism in particular (not that i know of) by the way, i just know they are an intolerant and ignorant bunch who probably dont know the first thing about islam in the first place.

oh you're far from ignorant....

hester · 23/02/2009 21:39

But sherazade, don't you think that website is racist?

I do.

I don't see why not, just.
Wome can be intolerably sexist so why can't a group be rasict towards the group they ( notionally) belong?
Certainly you hear racism from mixed race people dispite their own heritage.

lisalisa · 23/02/2009 22:52

Stewiegriffinsmom - the holocaust is a uniquely jewish tradgedy because it is the only time when one country has targetted and effectively tried to wipe out and murder 6 million of its own citizens and those of other countries it has conqueered due purely and only to their religion. It is also the culmination of 1000s of years of anti semitism.

Fwiw I have no objection to other groups being remembered in the day's ceremonies and why should they not be? I would however have objection to others trying to hijack it and de-judaise it with the efect of miniminsing its effect and purpose and turning it into a wishy washy anti racism day.

I disagree that it is a policitcal event and have never heard it called that before. that to me is an excuse not to join in. How can the remembrance of 6 million innocent souls be policitcal/ I think it is called that by those who wish to slur it and tar it wiht all sorts of brushes to meet their own objectives .

And I have never heard of this so called jockeying by members of different groups to either be included or not be included. Again, it smacks of an excuse not to be invovled with it/ deflect attention from it/criticise it.

lisalisa · 23/02/2009 23:01

Nizf - as you now know I didn't post your first quote.

Re the second , you seem to imply that not all Muslism accept this hadith about the Jews and the end of the world. Do you vbelive in it /hold by it? How many Muslims do ? I see it qutoed and referred to often I'm afraid .

OMG sherehazade - that link is abhorrent and I canot belive you have linked to it!! I have no clue who that karin friedmann is as I am sure you don't either but statements like:

" American Jews are being trained to emotionally destroy Gentiles " amongst other ditties is bloody fucking racist shit that ought to be deleted.

And that is the first and hopefully last tiem I ahve ever sworn on here. How bloody dare you link to such shit? Jews are being "trained" to "emotionally destroy Gentiles". Are you bloody mad or just endorsing such views to link to it? And just because this friedmann says she is jewish doesn't mean she is you know .

Disgraceful. I am going to email MN Towers to get that link taken off. Next we'llh ave a link to the protcols of Zion to "explain" more about the "emotional destruction" of the Gentiles.

lisalisa · 23/02/2009 23:08

Or perhaps we'll have alink to some nice little nazi site to tout their views on the jews. If this is what you subscribe to Shereahasdze you are one nasty peice of work. And what else your purpose in linking it but to bring it very slyly to everyone's attnetion. And how else and why else did you find it/subscribe to it/read it / post it?

[disgusted emoticon]

MiTochondrialEve · 23/02/2009 23:09

It seems that she is advocating an objective engagement with the problem - yet employing a highly emotive argument to do so.

MiTochondrialEve · 23/02/2009 23:12

My god, some hugely questionable language. A zealot in moderate clothing. At least with Melanie Phillips, she wears her zeal on her sleeve so you know what your dealing with!

lisalisa · 23/02/2009 23:12

NO -nonsense. She has linked to something vile for no purpose other than to bring it to people's attention. Should I link to some vile site depicting muslims as emotinally destoruying the west/being trained in deceit /ruining relatinships written by a muslim for the purposes of debate? I don't think so. Were I to find such a site I would leave well alone.

lisalisa · 23/02/2009 23:13

Mit - read the link properly - if this were said about your people with a background of losing 6 millin and thousands of years of persection and the constant resurfacing of the types of lies, libels and scurillious mischief that this woman pedels you might be moved away from polite debate too.

MiTochondrialEve · 23/02/2009 23:17

Lisa, leave it up. Let people make their own minds up. People (Jews, included) are not so passive and manipulative as Friedmann claims when it helps her argiment, (or, as it happens, the opposite for the same reason - in the same essay - go figure)

MiTochondrialEve · 23/02/2009 23:19

I think it is a mass of confusion and contradictions and don't think it's at all clever enough to rouse the racist masses - maybe just a few idiots. I don't think it deserves your energy. Most people here will see it for what it is.

lisalisa · 23/02/2009 23:23

No MIt - I am not going to stand by and see racism left unchallenged here for all to read day after day. That's like saying the ordinairy germans should have recofgnised and seen the nazi propoganda for what it was and that the jews shouldn't have reviled and worried about it.

Fwiw my grandfather marched against Mosley and my father fought NF supporters in the streets. I too can do my bit by ensuring this type of hatred does not stay here.
