So will a conference on anti-semitism really make any difference?

I know I've posted a few times about anti-semitism (and I'm sure some people think I should give it a rest) but it's something that's really worrying me at the moment. There's a conference - see here starting today to look at developing strategies to combat the rise in anti-semitism but will it really make any difference? The optimist in me hopes so, the cynic in me doubts it...

so lisalisa are you saying that all muslims are anti semitic then?

"the statements about muslims not being anti semitic....I am sorry but that is not true"

So - they are all anti semitic then? all Muslims?

sherazade · 22/02/2009 09:44

donnie, i also noted how lisalisa twisted my statement about the overwhleming majority of muslims not being anti semitic. instead of refuting my argument, she says 'about muslims not being anti semitic'. This is what i mean about this thread targetting muslims hatefully and indiscriminately.

WinkyWinkola · 22/02/2009 09:48

To be fair......

kate1956 · 22/02/2009 09:53

What a pile of outrageous crap lisa lisa - it is typical of your posts that you offer no answer to racism of any sort but descend into islamophobia as an attempt to justify the fact that you partition the world into ethnic groups.

I have no problem acknowledging anti-semiticism and since you have been the one to invoke the holocaust I should point out that like nearly all jewish people in the world my paternal family was all but wiped out in the death camps - however that does not mean that I think that racism should not be fought. And lets be absolutely clear - Ben gurion and the early Israeli leaders were not interested in jewish children UNLESS they were going to Israel so don't give me your half-baked attack on socialism as as answer to anti-semiticism. Oh but I forgot you know someone who is very important who is a socialist or is it labour who is anti-semitic! Funnily enough I know jews who make their feelings about arabs and jews blatently clear and lets face it the 'two-legged beasts' quote does not come from the muslim world does it.!
Actually I don't think we live in a nice fluffy world - in fact there is persecution and misery everywhere but you can CHOOSE your response to it.

The only person I can see on this thread who appears to have any sort of progressive response to racism where she's trying to do something about it is sherazade who earlier talked about bridging differences but she appears to have been ignored in favour of a whole load of rubbish about racism being something inevitable in the human gene!

sherazade · 22/02/2009 10:01

lisalisa, i do feel that you have expressed islampahobic sentiment on more on one account in this forum.
rememebring the term:

''sherazade and the rest of her ilk''

still feeling quite raw after that one. and neither apology nor explanation nor jusitification, have ever once been offered by said poster.

donnie · 22/02/2009 10:08

Ironic that the poster so concerned about anti semitism should herself appear to be a racist. Anyway I have said all this before. I could dredge up the threads ( actually I don't have to - I can remember the comments word for word!). But I just can't be arsed.

MiTochondrialEve · 22/02/2009 12:07

"very interesting that a thread on anti semitism has turned into '99 reasons to hate muslims'."

That is just absolute rubbish. It's beyond contempt really. The repulsive tactics in the effort fo slander people as racists
From Donnie - "so lisalisa are you saying that all muslims are anti semitic then?

"the statements about muslims not being anti semitic....I am sorry but that is not true"

So - they are all anti semitic then? all Muslims?"

The original statement is there and she never went anywhere near saying all muslims are anti-semetic. I really don;t know what you get out of trying to set people up like this, when they are trying harder than you to get to grips with a massivly fraught issue. And yiu have the gall to talk about 'twisting statements' Shera, when every reasonable statement and question is totally bent out of shape by your bad will and cynicism. " '99 reasons to hate muslims'"?? Only in your imagination. Or what the root of such misanthropy and intolerance to nuanced debate is. You offer no debate whatsoever and show no respect to those who seek to engage with you - instead you slander them when they attempt to explore ambiguity. This does not encourage debate, it closes it down. I see no good will or wish to communicate in your 'argument' - non at all. We "disgust" you. It's ironic that someone apparently offended by intolerance is the most intolerant of people grappling with huge and complex issues on this thread.

Now Donnie calls someone "racist" but "can't be arsed" to produce evidence and give that person a change to defend themselves of such a charge. Utterly dispicable and cowardly.

Pristina · 22/02/2009 12:24

That was a good article WW.

MiTochondrialEve · 22/02/2009 12:29

I have had occasion (not many in my time on MN thankfully) to challenge racists when they appear here. You've been around a long time Donnie, haven't you. Do you remember a thread called 'Muslims - NO!!'? Did you take part in that thread with the rest of us. It was a huge thread - before the days of limited postings and it went on and on.It was a verocious counter attack my mumsnetters to a racist poster. It was one of MN's greatest moments. Were we allies on that thread? Now I'm an enemy, it seems.

You remember Peacedove at all? I had a lot of time for him and defended him. Myself and Saadia were called to account by Moondog and a few others for that. The past doesn't count obvioulsy when you and Shera are so sure you are right and the rest of us wrong - wrong in even attempting to discuss it. You are policing these boards, shouting 'racist' at every opportunity in order to stop debate not encourage it.

MiTochondrialEve · 22/02/2009 12:34

or do you remember this?

sherazade · 22/02/2009 13:22

'we' and 'you'.

Interesting choice of words, MIt.

MiTochondrialEve · 22/02/2009 13:42

Oh give over, Shera. It's pathetic - all this post-structualist rubbish. That's all you are doing, constructing racism out of thin air.

sherazade · 22/02/2009 14:30

and your ''fuck islamism'' statement, is a perfectly tolerant and legitimate method of discussion and debate,is it?

MiTochondrialEve · 22/02/2009 14:43

You are really scraping the botton of the barrel Shera.

Absolutely, fuck Islamism, Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Mormonism, or any religion, if they put those ideologies before human individual rights.

WinkyWinkola · 22/02/2009 15:59

Hear hear.

donnie · 22/02/2009 16:32

yes indeed. Fuck all of it. How nice that this thread has reached such a pinnacle of intelligent discussion.

WinkyWinkola · 22/02/2009 17:17

So would you put Islam before human rights, donnie?

WinkyWinkola · 22/02/2009 17:17

And there is very very little constructive contribution from you donnie. Ever.

I think that your points above, justaboutindisguise are extremely good and rational and I'm full of admiration for how succinct you've been.

I am however bowing out of this discussion for now as am not able to keep a cool head at all and considering how new I am to this internet chat lark it has surprised me how irate I can get - and therefore just a tad incoherent!

Do however feel that your points about the far right need to be explored - funnily enought he only time I was ever beaten up for being jewish was by the National front (sort of forerunner to the BNP) in london in the 1970's and that was because the NFs slogan were all about the SWP being a 'conspiracy of jews' - funny old world eh?

I have no Jewish ancestry to my knowledge.

donnie · 22/02/2009 18:41

Rev- ( oops, sorry, justabout!) - you said it.

donnie · 22/02/2009 18:44

oh and kate - I have very clear memories of the NF back in the 70s. They hated people like my father and he was spat at and jostled by NF supporters more than once.
