Just breaking on Sky News that Brand has been charged with a number of rapes and sexual offences. Good.
I hope his victims are feeling vindicated and supported.

He’s been photographed at Mar a Lago recently with RFK 🙄

WTF? I hoped that was some sort of mistake.

But no, not just at Mar a Lago, but there as an honoured guest to receive a Global Defender of Freedom award from Donald Trump.

Along with such other heroes as Mike Tyson.

Russell Brand is now one of Trump's inner circle in Florida

For Brand, once a louche, effete comedian in guyliner, and the darling of Britain's Left (he even wrote for The Guardian), has reinvented himself utterly as the new pet of the American ultra-Right.

This is all from before he got sober. I do think he was different then. I think the RB in recovery is a reformed character. But clearly his past is catching up with him.

I agree. I listened to his podcast Under the Skin for a number of years, after he got sober. He really was not at all like the same sleazy person he was when in addiction. Like it or not he was thoughtful, insightful, reflective, intelligent and had some impressive guests who he more than matched in debate. He did seem to sincerely have moved on from the appalling behaviour of the past and seemed to be a committed family man who admitted to how awful he had been and felt ashamed of his past behaviour. I know that sounds hard to believe if you only know him from when he was a swaggering, drunk narcissist.

And of course this in no way at all excuses his past behaviour or exempts him from punishment.

most of it isn't, he got sober in 2002 (one day before me). i used to be a big fan of his and thought he was hilarious, partly because i felt that he and i were going through sobriety recovery in tandem. but i went right off him when i saw him intimidating an american news anchor and realised what a vile misogynist he is. i've never been a good judge of character though, i thought rolf harris was a nice old man and i used to want to write to jim'll back in the 70s. (incidentally it's not nice to say 'reformed' about people in recovery, we're not criminals. well not all of us.)

Russell Brand down, just Donald Trump and Prince Andrew to go.

What's the collective noun for a group of rapists?

"“Now listen, dear interlocutors of the infinite internet ether, before the Twitterati commence their collective fulmination, allow me to elucidate this most labyrinthine of misunderstandings with my customary cocktail of linguistic gymnastics and metaphysical musing. I have, it appears, been once again ensnared in the baroque bureaucratic balderdash of institutional intrigue – a veritable Kafkaesque carnival wherein my every utterance is dissected with the forensic zeal of a Victorian mesmerist examining the ectoplasm of moral panic.

Let it be known, amidst this cacophony of cancel culture and the inquisitorial eye of public opinion, that I remain as innocent as a freshly lactated vegan oat milk latte, steeped in the froth of social consciousness and sprinkled with the cinnamon of misunderstood intention.

So I shall, like Prometheus unshackled from the rock of recrimination, continue my peregrinations through the podcastosphere, disseminating truths and transcendence, whilst being pursued by metaphorical eagles hungry not for my liver, but for likes, retweets, and moral superiority. Namaste and carry on.”"

Good lord. Did he actually post that? What an up-himself idiot. Clearly too stupid to realise that excessive wordiness just makes you sound try-hard, not intelligent.

Well no, not if it's contempt of court

Maybe not a good idea to accuse someone else of stupidity in these circumstances ...

Dappy777 · 04/04/2025 17:13

Good. Never liked him. There is something about celebrity lefties that makes me suspicious. I have noticed this generally, actually. People who loudly proclaim their 'right on'/lefty views are often hiding something. I certainly don't mean that everyone who leans to the left is like that! But I remember a really creepy guy at university who belonged to the socialist worker lot. Even at the time I thought it was a smokescreen. Saville was another (albeit extreme) example – he hid behind all the charity work and marathons.

ARainyNightInSoho · 04/04/2025 17:14

@Dappy777 he's very far from being a lefty.

ARainyNightInSoho · 04/04/2025 17:17

Also @Dappy777 Jimmy Savile was a trillion miles away from being a lefty. The left want systemic change. People who do lots of visible charity work are all about individuals making a difference. It's a completely different mindset.

Celebrity personalities get caught and we hear about it. Think of all the horrible, nasty men out there who treat women bad and get away with it.

"The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."Police statement, reported on BBC today.

This.

I have no time for the man, but he shouldn't be tried, convicted and hanged by social media.

His associations with Trumpism (after previously presenting as very leftwing) and his very conveniently timed Christian conversion make it difficult to think well of him. He comes across as very much adopting whatever positions will get him the most attention.

DancingDucks · 04/04/2025 17:27

I wonder if all those celebs who were fawning over him a year ago when this first came out will still be quite so keen now that he has been charged?

He was so off his face all those years ago, I'm not sure how he could even be so sure of many actions he carried out.

Vegboxwonder · 04/04/2025 17:29

It's taken 18 months for the investigation and CPS decision to charge. On top of the many years since the alleged offences.

Just highlighting this, as these are the timescales victims of historic sexual violence are experiencing at the moment.

With the backlog in the courts at the moment, the trial may not be until 2027/8.

I feel so awful for the women, having this chapter of their story stay open for so long.

HelenWheels · 04/04/2025 17:39

look into my eyes, is his response

She had texts from him sliming on her and confirming their nights spent in hotels, saying how amazing she was etc

Really? I remember her claiming to have been with him, but don't remember any confirmation.

Agree. This latest reinvention as a Christian right wing anti vax mouthpiece should be regarded with the utmost cynicism.
He knows that he’ll be able to rally support from the most ignorant in society & the conspiracy theorists.

OonaStubbs · 04/04/2025 18:00

I hope he gets locked up for the rest of his life, I always thought he was creepy and annoying. Awful man.

RosaMoline · 04/04/2025 18:01

I forgot to mention that as part of his ‘Conversion’ he was eating steak at Mar a Lago. Believe he used to be vegan or vegetarian. Absolutely pathetic.

The Republican Party.

Well, current MAGA-edition.

I think it's important to remember it doesn't have to be like this.
