Lyra - You are confusing Defamation and Contempt of Court.

"How many home computers have child porn on is anybody's guess"

mine doesn't.

and I agree with poster who said "that shifty, slightly inadequate look is poverty".

No standard look for a paeodo, I'm afraid. If there was we'd be able to weed them out instantly and they wouldn't be able to cause the terrible damage they do.

amidaiwish · 02/04/2008 12:15

well even if he has nothing to do with her disappearance i am glad the police have arrested him, i am glad it has such a high profile and i am glad everyone is now linking him to it.

because it might stop the next sad f*&!+r downloading child porn if he knows it will be treated at this level by the police

the level of child porn is so out of hand.

as soon as the police stop treating it seriously we are in trouble.

Zazette · 02/04/2008 12:18

One of the most handsome, affluent, and successful men I have ever known was arrested for having child porn on his computer. Paedophilia is not class-specific.

DrNortherner · 02/04/2008 12:21

You are hardly living in poverty if you can afford 'designer' sportswear and have broadband are you?

Monkeytrousers · 02/04/2008 12:28

It's just the wisdom of hindsight isn't it. So common it has a maxim.

tortoiseSHELL · 02/04/2008 12:28

Not defending anyone here, but I do know someone who was 'arrested on suspicion of having child porn' - it was headline news on the 1 o Clock News as he was a school teacher. In a dawn raid the police seized his computer, all his DVDs, books, files, everything. He was suspended from work, his life completely fell apart. He was as good as named on the NATIONAL news (main story) as the school was named, and his dept (of 2 people) cited as being the dept in question. 3 months later the police returned the computer etc, as NOTHING had been found at all. There was 1 line in the local paper to say that no evidence was found, and I later discovered it was because he had been in contact with someone who was in a paedo ring - because he succeeded him in his job at another school and wanted to check something with him.

He had to leave the country ultimately and emigrate to leave it all behind him, as it followed him whenever he applied for a job etc. It was so wrong.

So I don't judge anyone until the evidence is actually presented. Which it may be in this case, or it may not be. But I will wait.

SueW · 02/04/2008 12:42

We had a trojan/virus porn dialler get onto our computer once.

I felt sick until we got rid of it - because the images of posed women it flashed up were not the sort of thing I wanted my DD -or me, or anyone else tbh - subjected to. I don't know how it arrived but it did and I can guarantee it wasn't me - because I wouldn't - or DH because he was out of the country.

I think it's because of this kind of thing that most of the prosecutions that come about e.g. ?Operation Ore are based around people having paid to access images on websites.

There are all sorts of things on our computers that many of us don't realise are there.

wannaBe · 02/04/2008 12:56

?He has that shifty, slightly inadequate look and manner that a lot of paedophiles seem to have.?. wow I never knew that paedophiles were so easy to spot. Why ever is there a need for the sex offenders register then when all you have to do is identify someone through their shifty looks? .

I think there is no doubt that there is something much deeper going on with this family/case, if there wasn?t then Shannon would have been returned to her family by now and she hasn?t. She hasn?t even been allowed to be in the same room as her mother yet. Also I read somewhere that SS were on the verge of taking her into care before this all happened, so apparently they were already aware of this family and on the verge of stepping in.

However, it is entirely possible to have images on a computer that you are unaware of, I think actually people don?t realize how easily porn can make it on to a computer, through viruses/pop-ups etc. And even if the images have been downloaded deliberately, this is a massive extended family we?re talking about, anyone in it could have access to the computer, the mother has had several partners, those images could have been there for years.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/04/2008 12:58

Yes, you're right Swedes. But there would still have to be a substantial risk of serious prejudice. And I don't think a bunch of women chatting on a website constitutes that at all.

elliott · 02/04/2008 12:58

Well I have been thinkign that there must be an issue with the home set up or they would have let her back by now. No idea whether it is linked to her disappearance. Still feel very sad for her mum though, not to have her back yet.

SlartyBartFast · 02/04/2008 13:06

shits gonna hit the fan now

wannaBe · 02/04/2008 13:07

tbh elliot I dunnow. Presumably the mother will have been told why Shannon has not been allowed to return home yet, although the papers do say she is there on a voluntary arrangement they have not been allowed any contact so the mother would know there's a problem surely? And if that was me I would be doing everything in my power to put right what was wrong so my child could come home, but this a woman who has 7 children, only 4 of whom live with her, so really it strikes me that she's not the type to fight for her kids as hard as some might.

shannon was close to being taken into care

GColdtimer · 02/04/2008 13:08

But some of us could end up on the jury lyra. Then there would have been risk of prejudice in the courts eyes. But you are right, this is no different to what people do in shops and on street corners. Unfortunately.

Monkeytrousers · 02/04/2008 13:11

I don't think theres any need to flame Lyra here. I disagree with her opinion too - but none of us are hardly in a postitioon of influence so it doesnt really amount to a hill o' beans!

elliott · 02/04/2008 13:15

Yes, I suppose its actually Shannon I feel sad for, although I am sure her mother does care for her, if imperfectly. It is never a happy scenario when children need to be taken into care.

SlartyBartFast · 02/04/2008 13:15

poor kid.

tiredemma · 02/04/2008 13:17

I feel complete pity for the poor children in that family.

wannaBe · 02/04/2008 13:17

thing is though twofalls, if something is reported in the mmedia then people will discuss it, especially when it's something as high profile as the Shannon Matthews case. And the media can't be prevented from reporting, because often the media are needed, ie for appeals for information etc, if they then are not allowed to follow that up with reports of the outcome, then they might be reluctant to report so much in the first place.

Monkeytrousers · 02/04/2008 13:26

I did sudder when I saw her mother - just cos she reminded me of many people in my own childhoos on sink estates.

Monkeytrousers · 02/04/2008 13:29

Well I'd hate top think you'd wanmt to dictate what people could talk about on street corners. There are many worse things in the world than talking!

Talk away. I may disagree with what you are saying Lyra, but I will defend your right to say it.

Down with censorship of any kind!

and all that...

Spaceman · 02/04/2008 13:30

My DH thought that 22 year old looked like a 'really nice bloke' after watching that documentary the other night!

osyth · 02/04/2008 13:34

I think you will find that Gary Glitter is both "stupid" and "wicked".

niceglasses · 02/04/2008 13:34

I read an interesting thing in one of the Sunday papers last w/end where the residents of the estate where Shannon lived were talking about the bloody awful press coverage they have had. And they have. I thought one made a good point - she had 4 kids from 2 fathers as it was reported in the press, but if this had been a nice m/c woman it would have been a 'second marriage'. Shes dead on. Now I know Shannons mum has more kids from more partners, but still, I think the point remains.

[ps - hello MTrews ]

Monkeytrousers · 02/04/2008 13:41

Hullo NG! I was wondering where you;d got to!

Small hijack - it's my birthday soon - you fancy coming out on the lash with the lasses on sat night? Or I fancy going to the turkish baths at the city pool and having a massage on sat morning/afternoon and maybe Panis after? You fancy??
