words fail me really, it's all too horrific

sarahu · 30/12/2004 15:58

jampots have been searching the lists for your friend but nothing so far with that name, but they haven't been updateed for a while xxx

juniperdewdrop · 30/12/2004 16:19

Thinking of you sarahu (((hugs)))

words really fail me, I just can't believe this. DS1 keeps looking at me wondering what's wrong but he's 7 and very sensitive so I don't like to explain. I'm trying to think of the right words to say without scaring him? Or maybe I should keep quiet?

I explained to DS he is 9 though when I told him 80,000

he said don't you mean 8,000 I said no and he was stunned silent

I wasn't sure what to say as he remembers the maldives and how we went on the little beach outside our villa,

I explained that an earthquake had happened under the ocean which had caused the wave.

when he heard the news {accidently} about children losing their parents and all their family he said he would just want to kill himself too if that was himI didn't know what to say then I just hugged him

lou, that is interesting about how the locals are rebuilding so quickly. Perhaps that answers some of the concerns about tourists continuing to visit expressed earlier. At least if visiting by cruise ship, they are unlikely to be draining local resources. After all these countries are going to need tourist income more than ever and presumably the cost of living is going to get higher whilst some items, including basic supplies, are scarce and sought after.

Senorchicca · 30/12/2004 18:31

Hello

Chicca is feeding the boy so I thought I'd pass this on in view of the earlier discussion about American scientists having warning of the tsunami.

Apparently there were no casualties on Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean because they were warned by America's Pacific earthquake monitoring system. Diego Garcia is British but uts inhabitants were kicked out years ago and have been trying ever since (unsuccessfully) to persuade the Government to allow them to go home.

They can't go home because...it's an American air base.

tiredemma · 30/12/2004 18:34

this has made me feel utterly distraught- it was on bbc news website for people trying to locate others, im sobbing my heart out "

Here is one finish little boy who is missing. I do not know him, but wanted to put this appeal here so if anyone could help their family. If there is any news. One year old finish boy is missing in Khao Lak, his parents Niina Sirparanta and Jari Vesalainen have survived and are desperately seeking any information about their son. Little Paavo has learned to walk and knows his first name. He was lost when the tsunami waves hit the beach.

  • I just don't know what to say.
marthamoo · 30/12/2004 18:47

Me neither I am just so very, very sad. Sarahu, reading your post...words fail me. My thoughts are with you. It's hard enough to watch the news footage, I can barely get my head round the fact that you are actually living it. I don't know what else to say. Have given money but it seems such an impotent gesture

Twiglett · 30/12/2004 19:04

I still can't stop crying .. and all the individual stories are just heartbreaking

There was an Australian woman on Sky news who had to decide which of her 2 children to let go in order to have a chance to save the other one. She let the eldest go, he must have been all of 4... thankfully she found him safe clinging to a door .. I cannot imagine the horror

thinking of you Sarahu and all out there

iota · 30/12/2004 19:06

It says on the BBC website that the UK gov have upped its donation to 50 million pound

winnie1 · 30/12/2004 19:07

words fail me also. I feel distraught and helpless. My heart goes out to all of you waiting to hear about friends and loved ones and to sarahu and lou I am thinking of you {{{{hugs}}}}

I am glad that the generosity of the British people has shamed our government into upping its original aid pledge.

Gobbledigook · 30/12/2004 19:10

OMG Twiglett - that's a mother's worst nightmare isn't it? OMG - that's so, so sad - thank God her eldest was safe too.

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 30/12/2004 19:16

Sad Sad

Twiglett · 30/12/2004 19:22

Now its saying on The Scotsman that Bush is trying to set up a rival coalition (USA, Australia, Japan and India) to co-ordinate aid .. rather than leaving it with the UN who are set up to do it story here .. ooo that government

winterwarmmummer · 30/12/2004 19:22

Big headed tosser

tiredemma · 30/12/2004 19:24

why does that man have to take over EVERYTHING and try to undermine other perfectly capable organizations?

Potty1 · 30/12/2004 19:27

Because he's an ar*e.

Gobbledigook · 30/12/2004 19:28

Oh what a prize pratt.

jofeb04 · 30/12/2004 19:32

my cousin is only 5, and she asked her mammy to phone up and donate her pocket money, its only £1.00, but if she can do it, we all can

Hope everyone is found safe and well. Thinking of you all

Meanwhile, Mozambique - one of the world's poorest nations - has donated $100,000 to an aid appeal for victims of the tsunami.

Mozambique suffered from catastrophic floods four years ago, which displaced some 70,000 people.

GB and USA Gov's should be very ashamed

marzipan · 30/12/2004 22:52

Can I ask everyone on here to go to "Light a candle for South Asia" and do so tomorrow night
