well its the start of another day. we still haven't found three members of my friends family - there are two fairly close name matches, but theuy still need to be followed up. Identification of bodies is now virutally impossible due to putrification, so basically they are taking DNA samples and then either burying or cremating them. It is impossible to check dental records because of the sheer number of casualties and I heard that there are not enough staff to take the DNA samples properly. However there is now a real fear that if the bodies are left too long disease will spread - cholera or something else. When I looked at some pictures it was impossible to tell whether the person was Thai or foreign. I won't go into the gory details but those images will stay with me forever.

Helicopters are still flying over all the time. THe number of pictures of those missing increases all the tiem.

Yesterday we had to send a German lady to the airport to fly back to Hanover. She has no idea where her husband is. SHe can't get into her house when she gets home because her husband had the keys and the car keys. There is a strong chance that she will never see his body.

There are two Swedish teenagers here, fortunatley with their Aunt, Uncle and cousins but they don't know where their parents are.

There is a young swedish couple who have two out of three children but the youngest of 2 1/2 is missing....lost from the beach. The mother saw me with my DD yesterday (she is 1 1/2) and she just stared at her for ages. The other tweo children are around 4 and 6.

Now I have to go and see my friend in hospital - she was transferred over from Krabi yesterday. DOn't know what I['m going to say to her.

Oh Sarahu -my thought and prayers are with everyone affected by this terrible atrocity - we are in total disbelief here that such a thing could happen - we will be lighting a candle for everyone affected tomorrow night. Our thoughts and prayer are with you - what else can we give. We have given a donation but it doesn't seem enough

fairyfly · 31/12/2004 02:41

Sarahu, i think your being wonderful, my thoughts are really with you, all i can say is stay strong (as ignorant as i am to all this,} stay strong, this is tough but you have so many people behind you and you can do it, i have decided to fly out on the 17th also, if i can get a flight please tell me if we can bring anything

sarahu · 31/12/2004 07:55

lou33 · 31/12/2004 08:06

Had an email from one of my friends at libong, they were all safe thank goodness.

Sarahu, would the needles and lines we have be any use to anyone medical? A paramedic gave them to me in the uk before we left just in case. All sterile.

tigermoth · 31/12/2004 08:06

sarahu, thank you for taking the time to tell us what's happening to you and the people you know. All those sad stories. Thinking of you all. I will be donating to your fund.

sarahu · 31/12/2004 08:09

lou33 i'm not sure...you could take them to one of the smaller hospitals. In phuket i think that things are under control but in Phang nga hospital I think it is still pretty bad. Hope that you are enjoying Nai Thon - that is my favourite place

tigermoth · 31/12/2004 08:12

Just read your list of missing people, sarahu, words fail me

glad your friends are safe, Lou.

LIZS · 31/12/2004 08:51

That list is just chilling and the photos especially harrowing - I'm in tears. Presumably it is replicated at all the hospitals, hostels and refuge centres all over, just can't begin to imagine the scale of it all....

Twiglett · 31/12/2004 09:36

crying again

my heart goes out to you Sarahu and all who are in that area

again this feeling of impotence is virtually unbearable

know that the world grieves with you and will do everything it can to help

Nutcracker · 31/12/2004 09:51

OMG the piccies on that link, i just cannot believe this

Angeliz · 31/12/2004 10:15

Have been reading this thread lost for words.
What you posted about the Swedish couple who have 2 out of 3 children but have 'lost' their 2 and half year old, really made me cry!
My dd (3.10)came into my bed this morning and i held her close and she was so warm and all i could think of were those poor people

Don't know what to say!

PuffTheMagicDragon · 31/12/2004 10:16

Sarahu, words fail me.

winnie1 · 31/12/2004 11:49

Sarahu, thank you for posting the link.... I can only imagine what horrors you are having to deal with my heart goes out to everyone touched by this nightmare
Lou I am glad that you have made contact with your friends, thinking of you all winnie x

emmatmg · 31/12/2004 11:51

I'm really finding it hard to take all this in. I cried at the shop this morning when I saw the papers.

I feel like I should stop reading and watching the news but How can I? All those people need as much support as they can possibly get and then after that they will need it again.

I can't turn my back because I find it to upsetting. How disrespectful would that be? I've got to help, just like the rest of us.

My heart really, truelly goes out to you sarahu, and everyone affected by this.

SuzyWongMerrilyOnHigh · 31/12/2004 13:12

same here
I saw the pictures on the Sun online of railey beach, which I know. It was of a woman rushing out to save her kids who were paddling - not a bloody hope in hell of surviving, but that's they way I would want to go, trying to save my kids.

Call me horrible and tasteless but I have been rationalising that those who were in the water would have been dead in less than 15 seconds, a small small mercy.

hercyulelog · 31/12/2004 13:24

I've just spoken to fil who is in Batticola in srilanka. He said 2,500 confirmed dead there, but they are expecting over 4000. A whole orphanage was wiped out. Thousands more have lost their homes there. Dh is out now organising fundraising.
I cant believe it is so sad.

WideWebWitch · 31/12/2004 13:28

It's impossible to read this thread without crying I find.
