welcome home Lou! Found out dh's work mate is safe. Apparently he was on the other side of Thailand so wasn't affected very much. He hasn't come home yet - not sure when due but I think things are a bit manic over there trying to get everyone home.

Ailsa · 04/01/2005 22:11

I must MUST stop reading this sort of stuff, and the papers, and watching the news.

I'm spending all my time in tears (or on the verge).

I used to be soo hard, but since having a child, I feel these things so much.

gingerbear · 05/01/2005 11:27

My DD 2.5 was looking at the newspaper with me. She saw a picture of a man in the water and asked me what was the matter with him? I said that a big wave came and washed him into the water. She said, it is alright mummy, another man will rescue him.

How do you explain this to a child? I wonder how much of the news they actually take in?

tiredemma · 05/01/2005 11:27

thats devasatating- i only glanced at the tv this morning and they were reviewing the papers, i briefly saw this but id assumed he had been swept away.
although its no compensation- im sure that his family are glad ( thats a stupid word i know as how can they be "glad" of anything? that they have his body and can bring him home.

im still having difficulty coming to terms with thinking about the small babies/children that were dragged from thier parents arms, to be honest its something that has kept me a wake the past few nights and im crying now as i type this.
i cant believe that mother nature could be so cruel.

Hi there

In response to the suggestion of some mumsnetters (further down this thread) that they'd like to do something collectively to help out in SE Asia, we're donating all money collected thru subscriptions to the S E Asia appeal fund for a week, starting today and ending end of Tuesday 11th Jan. You can subscribe as little or as much as you want by clicking here

Many thanks

Rachel, Carrie and Justine

Lou - I cried when I read about you running away from the water with your little ds in his wheelchair. You must have been so scared. It really brought this whole thing home to me. I am so glad you are all safe.

I know quite a few people who were in the region at the time, including my bil's family who live in Malaysia, and I feel so thankful that all of them have survived.

So so sad about all the thousands who didn't. Unbelievable.

Hi there

I know some of you have been experiencing problems donating to the appeal via our subscriptions page. If so, try this URL . Let us know if you are still having problems.

Thanks and sorry for any confusion

dh heard from a friend at work the other day that their old work colleague who had gone out to Thailand to do diving (posted further down) was contacted prior to the tsunami striking from a friend. He and his wife managed to get their diving boat onto high ground before the tsunami struck and were there for 5 days before going back down and finding the devastation so [happy] that they survived.
