sarahu - just glad to hear that you're OK. I hope all your friends/family are safe too.

Lou - same goes for you. I can't imagine how awful it must have been and hope the children are coping.

The pictures on the TV are terrible but they can't go anyway near to portraying the devastation, its just immense. Feel so useless.

Praying for everyone affected by this

emMerryChristmastmg · 28/12/2004 15:07

I don't usually read Sky news but they are saying 55,000 lives have been lost, and the toll will still rise.

Gobbledigoose · 28/12/2004 15:10

OMG - last night I said to dh '11,000 people have died' and we couldn't get our heads around that.

Just got ds3 (4 months old) up out of bed and had a big cuddle with him - terrifying and heartbreaking to think babies just like him have been lost in this terrible disaster.

Feel so helpless - anyone know yet if we can donate clothes and blankets any way?

jingleballs · 28/12/2004 15:19

glad to hear ur ok lou, when can u come back home?

Gobbledigoose · 28/12/2004 15:20

I've just donated through the British Red Cross - will my money def go to the earthquake appeal? This is a safe way to donate isn't it? I know it's a bit daft to ask after I've done it but that's me!

The site said it was much easier to receive cash donations than blankets etc as they can use the money more efficiently.

I haven't read all of this thread but like all of you I feel like I wish I could DO something to help. Is the Red Cross the best place to donate money to - I haven't got loads but I want to do something. Here we all are sitting in our warm homes with a fridge full of food and they've got nothing. Can't believe this has happened, those poor people....

Frizbethereindeer · 28/12/2004 16:19

Red cross are accepting donations, as I think are Christian Aid, as saw them on TV earlier, the link further down here, is the best way/quickest (trying to go via main page takes ages as site busy!) to donate to Red Cross tho.

snowdonim · 28/12/2004 16:19

The Sri Lankan High Commision has set up a charity appealing for clothes etc from expats here in the UK but presumably they'd accept donations from other people. Story here although I haven't been able to get onto the website mentioned.

I can't believe how the death toll goes up and up every time I hear the news; it's apocalyptic, almost too big to understand.

StuffTheMagicTurkey · 28/12/2004 16:22

KristmasBear - personally, I think the Red Cross are the best charity to donate to in this situation (I've just done so too via their website). I feel safe sending my money to them - had a friend who worked for a variety of charities including the Red Cross and she always said they in particular, really knew what they were doing.

Gobbledigoose · 28/12/2004 16:41

Thanks for that StuffthemagicTurkey - donated to them and thought 'arrghg, is that the best place?'.

I do not want to put pressure on anybody but I have just had an idea

Am I correct thinking there are 20,000 on mumsnet well if everybody gave £1 then we would have contributed up to £20,000

Obviously if we gave more then that would be brill but I do understand that for some families they are struggling themselves financially.

What do you all think about that?

Please do not feel under pressure it is just an idea.

Gobbledigoose · 28/12/2004 17:43

I think it's a brilliant idea and I'd happily donate my £1 (would donate more but just have done on the Red Cross site .

KangaSM, it's brilliant - I'm sure noone would object to donating £1 - as mothers and fathers ourselves we can only want to help those poor families that have been so devastated.

How would we do it though - how would we coordinate it?

KangaSantaMummy · 28/12/2004 17:50

gg do you think there are 20,000 on here?

either do it on to red cross or even better perhaps mumsnet could do it could ask tech

will ask again on site stuff

OP posts:
DelGirlsRingAreYouListening · 28/12/2004 17:53

what if we were to pay the money through the subs and then mn pay it all to the redcross? Though it may interfere with tax etc for mn I suppose.

Gobbledigoose · 28/12/2004 17:53

It would be nice if we could do it through MN so that MN as a whole donates it rather than all just donating £1 to Red Cross separately (if that's what you meant?).

There are supposed to be 20,000 on here but there aren't 20,000 regular posters are there? I wonder how we could work out how much we'd be likely to get. I can't see why anyone at all wouldn't donate £1 though can you?

Def ask tech to see if there's a way we could do it through this site.

KangaSantaMummy · 28/12/2004 18:01

have asked tech on site stuff

This link

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4129371.stm

has a list half way down with a list of charities collecting donations all reputable charities (in my opinion).

snowdonim · 28/12/2004 18:09

MN did a charity donation when Michelle died see here . I don't know whether Gift Aid can be organised with MN, too. I've just done a Red Cross donation via the link lower down this page.

StuffTheMagicTurkey · 28/12/2004 18:11

Have already donated to Red Cross. but would be happy to donate to a Mumsnet co-ordinated effort.
