Can't see anything on your link Snowdonim.

snowdonim · 28/12/2004 18:30

Hmm, that's odd! It took me ages and ages to find in the first place. Again

MariNativityPlay · 28/12/2004 18:59

Have done Red Cross, think a MN coordinated donate is a WONDERFUL idea, KSM, brilliant suggestion.
Thinking very much of everyone in the region today. The British papers make heart-rending reading, ours certainly did not under-report the horror of the situation in the poorer, non-tourist areas.

CarriedAwayByXmas (mn) · 28/12/2004 19:02

Hi

I've posted on site stuff on this. We think it's a great idea and we could certainly do something through our subscriptions area ie we'd donate everything given via subscription to the appeal fund for certain dates, exactly as we did when we collected when Michelle from Lakeland died. However, the downside of doing it through mumsnet is that unless anyone can think of something we haven't, there'd be no way of gift aiding the donation, which means the charities would lose out if those donating were tax payers. Also as we're operating on a skeleton staff here at the mo, the turn around on getting the donations and passing them on wouldn't necessarily be immediate. So for now at least it might be better ask everyone to donate directly to charity - then those who pay tax can gift aid and we'll know it's getting through straight away. Then if folks are still keen, early in the New Year we'll pick a week and publicise the fact that all subs given that week will be sent to the appeal. Does that sound OK? and if so can folks post any links they've come across where people can donate?

Thanks

KateandtheElves · 28/12/2004 19:06

Carrie, that's an excellent idea.

In the meantime, the Red Cross (either British or American) is an excellent way to donate money. They were a great help to me, and my family in the UK, after 9/11, and I intend to give back, even if just in a small way, by making a substantial contribution to them for those people currently suffering.

emmatmg · 28/12/2004 19:08

Have donated to Red Cross but would definatley renew my subs early if MN could do this.

Excellent idea.

KangaSantaMummy · 28/12/2004 19:10

I am so glad that mumsnet are going to be able to help it work

I just think all the families in SE ASIA who need help can be helped by us as a collective club.

BBC South Asia page with URLs for many charities and some local relief organisations.

JanH · 28/12/2004 19:26

Oh, that's an India page rather than the whole area but the websites are still good.

Gwenick · 28/12/2004 19:47

Jan this link

\link {http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/4129371.stm\charities link} hope I've done that right - has a list of British charities (about half way down) that are organising stuff

JanH · 28/12/2004 19:57

BBC page - your link, Gwenick - thanks!

nailpolish · 28/12/2004 20:16

i would happily donate to a fund in MN, thats a great idea KSM. i have been wondering how to make a contribution today. every time i turn on the telly the numbers are higher and higher.

Moomin · 28/12/2004 20:28

my dad phoned me tonight to say that my brother had phoned him this evening from the maldives. He had just arrived that morning and was alseep in bed when it happened. where he was there was just an enormous rush of water and then it just subsided leaving everyone knee-high in water. certainly very scary but could have been so much worse, as demonstrated by the terrible news reports.

KangaSantaMummy · 28/12/2004 20:30

moomin that is brill that you have heard from him

Moomin · 28/12/2004 20:32

thanks kanga, yes it's a huge relief. my dad and i both had a little cry on boxing day when we heard he was safe, and i'm crying now - relief again but sadness for all the other families that haven't had our good luck

Gobbledigook · 28/12/2004 20:32

Moomin - so glad he's ok.

SueW · 28/12/2004 21:47

There's a DEC Appeal which is the umbrella for the UK aid agencies - call 0870 60 60 900. There are 3,000 lines for donations.

More info on this appeal about halfway down.

DEC co-ordinate other big campaigns - the last was Sudan. But iirc correctly from my banking days, the banks take turns in hosting the special appeal accounts so the money is used for each specific incident.

belledejour · 28/12/2004 22:09

I have now donated to Red Cross but am wondering about other ways to raise money. Any ideas?

We were given a huge Fortnum & Mason hamper for Christmas by client of DH and haven't opened it yet. Would like to give it to charity so could be raffled to raise money (would have cost around £500). Do you think Oxfam would accept something like this?

Also any other ideas for raising money in the local community? I'm sure Mumsnetters with kids at school will have good ideas for fundraising. All I can think of so far is a bake sale which will prob. not raise much. I know so many people who want to help but cannot afford to make big donations.

My dd1 has a little friend at nursery who is in Sri Lanka with his mum, dad and brother. They went at the beginning of Dec for a month. Can't stop thinking of them and wondering if they are OK.

OLittleYurtofBethlehem · 28/12/2004 22:10

Now they are saying 60,000 deaths and still rising.........

emmatmg · 28/12/2004 22:31

Watching the news. I just can't stop crying.

They were talking about mass graves but that some people were lucky to find their loved ones bodies.........it showed a man and woman each carrying a dead child. One was no older than my DS3.

I can't imagine the pain and heartache those people must be going through.
I feel so useless just sitting here watching the tele in my nice warm house with hundreds of pounds worth of new toys that will be forgotten in a few weeks.
I almost feel ashamed.
