I actually like Russel brand . And I don't think he's ever hidden what he used to be in his heyday. He's always been very open about his drug use, and promiscuity.

I read his first book . I watch his videos on fb , and while I don't always agree with him, he seems to have totally overhauled his lifestyle, attitudes, is into yoga, self care, seems to be a decent husband and father .

Is this newsworthy ? Young famous comedian in heyday slept with lots and lots of women , consensually he says ?

Hes never hidden it.

On drug misuse I alWays had time for his views that it should be dealt with as a medical issue not a criminal one

What's the news story ?
I always feel like there is much glee and salivating before the media try and knock someone down.
I don't think this is a huw edwards where people would be shocked at him trying to pick up young women behind his wife's back

It seems that brand has settled down , lives a fairly mundane lifestyle and is happy with his choices .

Or am I completely missing something?

The news story is that there are allegations of rape. Not news???

43ontherocksporfavor · 17/09/2023 12:15

You really are judging the victims because they didn’t act sooner? Have you thought about trauma, shame, denial and guilt? I can imagine that it’s tough to stand up to someone who has so much power in your industry. We’ve seen it all before but still the victim is blamed. 🙄

AngryGreasedSantaCatcus · 17/09/2023 12:17

@beatrix1234 to quote DD "that sounds like a you problem". Your own bias and mysoginy coming into play.

In the Ch4 app it says "no episodes available to watch on demand" -- even though there's a huge banner for the RB Dispatches show on the home screen?

Anyone know why?

Because most probably the CH4 lawyers have done their homework before…

This thread is awful.

Can we not just discuss this without personal attacks on one another?

This is supposed to be a website for women supporting each other. So many threads descend into bun fights but you'd think we could be civil over such a serious topic.
I have to believe these women. They're taking such a massive risk. RB could drag them through the courts.

bombastix · 17/09/2023 12:35

Brand is not the only one it seems; but of course it tells you everything that others are still employed in the same industry with similar alleged issues.

Lalgarh · 17/09/2023 12:38

Yes good on Katherine Ryan.

I've not checked twitter/X so don't know what other comedians who are meant to do Truth Telling To Power have said. Theres that Daniel Sloss guy.

Chris Addison posted a link to a rape crisis source of help.

I do agree about the turning on one another. I think the guys a first class see you next Tuesday and deserves to be totally off screen or radio , but he mainly is these days- he had already to some extent been 'cancelled' - it is perfectly possible to think he's guilty as hell, totally revolting but not see the point of these revelations- unless he is going to be charged- I fail to see the point- he isn't an unknown quantity-whereas something like Huw Edwards was a shock.

All this has done in my opinion is given him the oxygen of publicity- there are very sadly plenty of hideous people out there (mainly men) who will find all this quite amusing and lap up his YouTube stuff too.- and I would be very suprised if it does anything- except give him publicity- as attitudes have changed a lot even in the media and what's shown since RBs peak .

She’s conceded she was wrong. Whether or not you think she’s grovelled enough for your liking is another matter. You (and others) are becoming personally abusive towards her and it undermines the point you’re trying to make

What are you talking about? I haven’t ‘abused’ her, in fact I haven’t addressed her at all since yesterday afternoon.

The point she (and you apparently) continue to miss is that even having personal and professional experience with sexual abuse and rape doesn’t mean you’re immune to displaying bias in favour of a misogynistic society to the detriment of female victims.

I don’t want grovelling, maybe some evidence of comprehension even some education, but not grovelling. If a point is repeatedly missed then I make no apology for repeating it.

If @fabmaccawhackythumbsaloft has an issue with me she can take it up with me directly, I don’t have any opinion on your opinion of comments that took place without any input from you at the time.

I can get it on my laptop on demand, so maybe just a problem with the app (sorry to disappoint beatrix)?

I find it very very grim to hear on this thread of women who were sexually abused yet none went to the police, yet they want the world to Magically change and sexually abusive men to stop. Change starts with going through the legal channels, not the tabloids.

I can't believe I almost found myself writing a justification as to why I didn't report when I was anally raped by my husband but I'm not going to. If you're that hard of thinking and ignorant then that's on you but my heart goes out to each and every victim who ever has the misfortune to cross your path. I only hope that some day you'll reflect on those words and see that you are a huge part of the problem.

I'm so sorry that happened to you @MsLavender and please ignore this poster who is only interested in silencing and disempowering victims. Threads like this attract misogyny, victim-blaming and rape-apology but the backlash is so great because people like this cannot stand it when women succeed in making their voices heard. The fact they're crawling out of the woodwork is testament to how loudly these voices have been heard this weekend and the impact it's had.

A bit of light reading for everyone who is still asking why. As if it's not so fucking obvious already.🙄

I have already said I am NOT going to justify why I didn't to ANYONE, especially not YOU! Yes, it's clear you have a hard time understanding but it's not my job to educate you on what should be common knowledge, if you're incapable of looking into the subject further to get a better understanding then that is on you. I am sick and tired of people like you berating victims for making their own decisions, whatever they may be, after they have been assaulted or raped.

Here you go @beatrix1234. Wrap your head around this if you can

GrazingSheep · 17/09/2023 14:36

Good god. You are a detective and can’t find out basic info??
No wonder the police are held in such low regard.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/09/2023 14:38

@MsLavender I am so sorry , what an awful thing to do and I do totally understand why you wouldn't go to the police in that situation, I don't think I would have done so either if I am honest with myself - even though I struggle slightly to see why these women didn't in their situation and with no committed ties to him - I definitely would have- even if just to get it on file.

Cornettoninja · 17/09/2023 14:41

@beatrix1234 you’re not sorry, you don’t give a shit.

You are talking to a real person about a real rape and you think it’s acceptable to grill them like some sort of pound shop laura kuenssberg on sale.

You are absolutely part of the problem and most likely always will be. You’re beyond redemption.

How can you no see the point?! These women have a right to have their voices heard and I hope that it will encourage other women to come forward. Hopefully he will be jailed for this.

Notonthestairs · 17/09/2023 14:44

You don't know how you'd behave in their circumstances.

If you can't understand why victims don't report read this from the victims commissioner -

For victims, reporting rape is effectively a lottery and the odds are rarely in your favour. In the year to December 2021, there were 67,125 rape offences recorded – an all-time high. Yet the number of completed rape prosecutions plummeted from 5,190 in 2016-17 to just 2,409 in 2020-21. The numbers of convictions almost halved (2,689 in 2016/17 compared to 1,409 in 2020/21). Only 5% of rapes that were given an outcome by the police in the year ending December 2021 resulted in a charge.
If you defy the odds and secure a charge, you will likely have to wait the best part of three years from reporting before you will get to trial. Along the way, your trial date will almost certainly be fixed, then cancelled and then relisted months into the future. The joint thematic inspection on rapee_ found that on more than one occasion, this happened just hours before victims were expected in court. You will have lost sleep dreading re-visiting what happened at the trial only to have to get over it and draw your resolve together again. You will be tested at every juncture.
And should you persevere to the trial – perhaps more than a year from when the defendant was charged – you are likely to find giving evidence highly re-traumatising. Some victims tell me they find their experience in court worse than the offence itself.
Despite warm words from the government and from our criminal justice agencies, this is still often the stark reality for rape victims.

That's funny because I strongly believe it's people like YOU who are part of the problem by encouraging women to not go to the police when a sexual assault happens and telling them they won't get heard of taken serious. That's quite. dangerous and irresponsible message, specially for young women.
