Just heard this on the radio, does anyone have an actual source? Can't see it anywhere yet, I'm sure that is what I heard, assume not 'serious' as in risk to them?

Backgrid have released this:

"At BACKGRID USA Inc., we value transparency and ethics in journalism, which include providing fair and factual responses to claims. We are aware of Prince Harry's statement regarding an alleged 'near catastrophic car chase' involving himself, Meghan Markle, and her mother, in New York City on Tuesday night. We want to clarify that we have received photos and videos of last night's events from four freelance photographers, three of whom were in cars and one of whom was riding a bicycle. It is important to note that these photographers have a professional responsibility to cover newsworthy events and personalities, including public figures such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle."
"According to the accounts given by these freelance contributors, they were covering the couple's stay in New York City, including the possibility of a dinner after an award ceremony. They had no intention of causing any distress or harm, as their only tool was their cameras. A few of the photos even show Meghan Markle smiling inside a cab," Backgrid continued. "The photographers report that one of the four SUVs from Prince Harry's security escort was driving in a manner that could be perceived as reckless. The vehicle was seen blocking off streets, and in one video, it is shown being pulled over by the police. We understand that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's security detail had a job to do, and we respect their work. We do, however, want to point out that according to the photographers present, there were no near-collisions or near-crashes during this incident. The photographers have reported feeling that the couple was not in immediate danger at any point. At BACKGRID USA Inc., we do not condone any form of harassment or illegal activity. We are taking Prince Harry's allegations seriously and will be conducting a thorough investigation into the matter."

Yes exactly so not even a high speed car chase and the lady was still severely injured, now factor in a car chase by deranged prazzi and it could have been catastrophic! Anyway thank God nobody was injured and hopefully.

Hopefully the lady who was knocked down by princess Sophie entourage does make a speedy recovery soon

You're just being an irritant on purpose now. 🙄

What are 'prazzi'?

it could have been catastrophic!

Yes. But it wasn't, was it? it seems to have been rather different from what was first reported.

How it was reported had OP thinking they were laid up in the hospital with serious injuries.
That’s the imagery ‘near catastrophic’ conjures up.

I think we can all agree that what actually happened is nowhere near that, and the statement over-egged the pudding, just a touch.

So backgrid are saying the only ones driving erratically were H&Ms own security.

I feel like this is going to get very interesting….

MmaRra · 17/05/2023 21:31

Mumsnet debate has reached a low point if we are having videos of the likes of Nigel Farage spewing his bile posted to further one side of an argument.

Cornettoninja · 17/05/2023 21:32

@Ellaelle you’re a riddle aren’t you? Staunchly defensive of H&M and the notion of ‘being kind’ but quite happy to use the recent actual death of someone and badly disguised insults about a very unassuming member of the RF to score points on the internet.

OhcantthInkofaname · 17/05/2023 21:32

Ihavenoauthority · 17/05/2023 15:45

What a load of crap, another stunt to try and get free security 🤣

Stunt? You remember his mom?

StormzyinaTCup · 17/05/2023 21:33

@Bluebells1970 I was just about to post that exact statement and thought this in particular was an interesting comment:

"The photographers report that one of the four SUVs from Prince Harry's security escort was driving in a manner that could be perceived as reckless. The vehicle was seen blocking off streets, and in one video, it is shown being pulled over by the police.

tailinthejam · 17/05/2023 21:34

The one word from Backgrid's statement that sticks out a mile is 'alleged'.

Hmm...

The Sussexes have reached a low point when Farage has more credibility.

OhcantthInkofaname · 17/05/2023 21:32

That is what makes their claim so horrendous.

Mackerson · 17/05/2023 21:13

Seriously. Neither of them are fricking princesses. 🙄

Alright alright don't get your knickers in a twist, I'm sure it doesn't affect your day whether I refer to them as princess or otherwise! 😅you the title police? 😆

SilentHedges · 17/05/2023 21:38

fajitaaa · 17/05/2023 18:49

Who is this scobie guy

Omid Scobie is originally a Journalist, but co wrote "Finding Freedom".

Anything Scobie says or tweets is obviously Meghan Markle. He's her mouth piece.

YourWinter · 17/05/2023 21:38

The only people saying it happened are the Markles. If there are cameras on every street corner in New York, someone will be able to see what their two-hour ordeal really involved.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 17/05/2023 21:38

You're just being an irritant on purpose now

Oh I dunno. Given that we had a while back at least three looooong threads explaining exhaustively that King's wife = Queen Consort = Queen and there's nothing else to it and people still weren't getting it, some people really are that...how can I phrase it...incapable of taking in information that doesn't chime with what they already have in their heads.

WheresSpring · 17/05/2023 21:42

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain - very delicately put (I hadn’t let myself type anything because I wasn’t feeling quite so generous)🙈🤣!!

Emotionalsupportviper · 17/05/2023 21:34

The Sussexes have reached a low point when Farage has more credibility.

That's your opinion and you are entitled to it.

Farage has never had any credibility and never will have. He is lower than a reptile's belly. The Sussexes might not be everyone's cup of tea or get everything right, but they are not hate filled people like him. Just my opinion.

I did have to take my hands off the keyboard and think about it. 😆

LivingOnAnIsland · 17/05/2023 21:44

One of the photographers was on a bicycle? Wow, that chase must have been wild.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/05/2023 21:45

The fact that all the papers are quoting ‘near catastrophic’ (with the quote marks) shows that this is what they have been told. By Omid Scobie presumably, as he’s the one who ‘broke’ the story

But Scobie indicated on his own Twitter that "a spokesperson said ..." so unless he's being even more disingenuous than usual it doesn't look as if the original story came from him?

If it's good enough for the Dutch army it's good enough for the prazzi

PicturesOfDogs · 17/05/2023 21:47

Was any part of this actually true then?

This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD (New York Police Department) officers," the spokesperson said in a statement.

As far as I can see there’s no other drivers, pedestrians or police officers confirming this.

Even the ‘over two hours’ part appears to be untrue?!?

I wouldn't expect anything else from the 'freelance contributors' aka paparazzi. As if the paps are going to admit they behaved like a pack of wolves hounding and chasing down prey.

viques · 17/05/2023 21:51

I would just like to reiterate that there was no need for them, and her mum, to be in NY at all. As people who are concerned for the environment they could have easily joined the award ceremony from California, so saving their carbon footprints, and as it turned out, all this drama.

So the spokesman must have contacted Omid? As I believe he ‘broke’ the story? (Happy to be corrected if not).

I just don’t believe a ‘near catastrophic’ car ‘chase’ lasting ‘over two hours’ would have gone unnoticed by an entire city, and had to rely on a H&M spokesman.

The whole thing is so weird.

It’s giving Jussie Smollett if I’m honest.
