I'm not a bot.

Was just trying to find out a bit more about the situation, build-up of current events beyond the surface information.

Found a lot of information from late last year (leaked Pandora Papers) - of course like all news it's Hmm

but he isn't some naïve young actor with a cute architect wife who accidentally fell into politics whilst playing Paddington?

Got my flameproof suit on but I just think in terms of information (especially as some Mumsnetters are probably using this forum as a primary source of information) it's useful to try to have a complete picture if you're thinking about how to engage with a situation that you're learning about.

Everyone comes into a situation from a different angle - I'm personally fairly uneasy with backing policies that put myself and people on the breadline at risk, by a multi-millionaire with substantial assets abroad with links to a billionaire who is already sanctioned by the EU and the US (awaits flaming).

(am I the only one who is hunting down a source of "unbiased news" regularly?)

I'm sure the regular media is aware of this and when it suits the narrative/story arc they'll bring it up again.

I also have no clue why Asian or African websites should be particularly objective on this issue either tbh!

Xiaoxiong · 08/03/2022 23:40

So what? When his country was invaded, he stayed and led his countrymen and didn't run away with his family to a bunker in NZ in a super yacht. He is insanely brave and I don't think he's going it because he thinks he's saving his media empire and personal wealth - quite the opposite. The likelihood is that we all wake up tomorrow to find he's been shelled to smithereens or a Russian assassin squad shot him, when he could have used his wealth and connections to leave.

I'm not supporting him because he's pure as the driven snow and cuddly and the voice of paddington bear. I'm supporting him because he's showing incredible courage leading his country's defence to a horrible invasion.

Twinstudy · 08/03/2022 23:41

OP can you please explain why you think it should be reported right now? It's not new news, it's already been widely reported as you have demonstrated. It bears no relation to the current news so why would anyone report on it?

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/03/2022 23:42

I'm not trying to explain the whole conflict and I doubt anyone will be able to unpick it for a good few years to come (maybe some Oxbridge history professors in fifty years time if we're not in a nuclear wasteland).

No, you're digging as much dirt as you can find on a man whose country, family and self are under attack from the Russian army under Vladimir Putin. MNetters are more than aware of how corrupt politicians are. Even the younger Mnetters have been around to witness sleaze around Covid and the Pandora Papers.

So why pick on a bloke who's risking himself to lead from the front in the fight for freedom @SandyStrawToad?Confused

Many African and Asian countries are part of NAM (Non Aligned Movement) 120 countries at last count.

They don't align themselves with any big powerbloc First World (the West) or the Second World (USSR as it was then). Hence they were called the Third World countries.

Today Third World has come to mean something poor and derogatory

Anoooshka · 08/03/2022 23:49

Perhaps Russia could invade us too? After all, many MPs have money in offshore accounts and have links to dodgy billionaires.

Flavabobble · 08/03/2022 23:52

It would take someone exceptionally gormless to think that.
But whatever. His nation is being invaded by another. He's somewhat unexpectedly galvanised his nation into fighting back. Kinda doing what leaders are meant to do

I'm sure you don't.
RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 23:53

Churchill fucked up Gallipoli.

Pretty sure thats probably worse thsn Zelensky track record.

Churchill got rewarded for WWII victory by being dumped by the electorate.

Yes lets talk about track record, past history and credibility.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 09/03/2022 00:01

And he sent the army in to deal with British citizens in South Wales Red

Yes, you’re the only person who seeks out a range of sources of information. The only person who thinks about what they’re told. The only person smart enough to realise nobody becomes the leader of anything at all because they played a cutesy character once. Thank God you’re here.

Lead us oh Great Truth Teller!

EsmaCannonball · 09/03/2022 01:05

Aubrey Belford, one of the journalists who worked on the Pandora Papers investigation, is not happy with the way Russian propagandists and bots are twisting this story to discredit Zelenskyy. I've just discovered he's a very interesting person to follow on Twitter in the current situation, especially in relation to debunking all the 'Ukrainians are Nazis' stuff.' You need to click on 'Tweets and Replies' to see most of his comments on the Pandora Papers.

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

Can people please stop putting pictures of Johnson up 🤢

Nightmare fuel 😵‍💫

Why? I’m filling up my wank bank! shudders
pucelleauxblanchesmains · 09/03/2022 01:07

@abitbesotted Yes, yes, I'm probably a racist or something, whatever. Go and read al-Jazeera or Indian state media and pretend they're the unvarnished truth if you like.

EddyF · 09/03/2022 02:13

When did this place become such an echo chamber? The OP has a right to want to discuss whatever they want to discuss. MM used to be a place of such intelligent women but it has been hijacked by simpletons who have such stupid stock ‘insults’ and think they’re being ‘edgy’.

Thanks for the links OP; although I was already aware of the subject matter.

On another point, I just pray this suffering (and other worldwide suffering) just comes to an end. There are just no words to describe what these people are going through. I hope there is a resolution soon because the deeper it gets I just can’t see a way out.

Skiptheheartsandflowers · 09/03/2022 02:15

Ok, let's work out what your point is. Some questions for you.

Considerable sacrifices are being requested from other nations (and especially from his own countrymen) from someone I know very little about (and admit so).

This seems to imply that he's asking for unreasonable sacrifices from the Ukrainians. In what way? Defending their country? Do you think he should be surrendering their nation to Russia? Do you think they would prefer that?

What are the sacrifices you think he's asking of you? You mentioned 'the bread line' so presumably financial. Do you think it's unreasonable that your heating bills will go up because Ukraine is resisting invasion? Do you think Zelensky should subsidise your bills from his offshore accounts? And do you think that Putin controlling all of Russia AND Ukraine's gas will be better for you in the long run?

Ridiculous post.

user43786 · 09/03/2022 04:22

I'd like to know what the Ukrainian army were burning from the government intelligence building in Kiev when the Russians started to attack. Instead of helping the people they had time to build a bonfire and carry countless documents outside to be destroyed.

In war it's always the innocent civilians that get off worse but there's something not right about this whole situation in my opinion. What do they have that's so bad they couldn't risk the Russians seeing it so had to destroy it?

Throw in the fact that the Ukraine is in the top 10 of most corrupt countries in the world plus the Biden link and something doesn't add up.

I feel for the Ukrainian people but I don't think they are being told the whole truth about this war either.

Why is everyone here objecting to facts? To the point of being pig ignorant to the OP. I know you all think you are absolute experts on Ukraine and Russia, but true experts are interested in facts. And the UK will continue to go down plughole while all the voters are so cavalier about political corruption

Lostinafjord · 09/03/2022 05:07

@Blinkingbatshit

Have you researched the Tory cabinet?! Throw stones at glass houses closer by if you must throw them at all!
I genuinely thought she was talking about Boris at that point!
Igneococcus · 09/03/2022 05:50

You worry about a few offshore accounts while Putin and his oligarch chums have squirreled away the rich natural ressources of Russia away from Russia's people into their own pockets and their fucking hideous superyachts? Really?
