I'm not a bot.

Was just trying to find out a bit more about the situation, build-up of current events beyond the surface information.

Found a lot of information from late last year (leaked Pandora Papers) - of course like all news it's Hmm

but he isn't some naïve young actor with a cute architect wife who accidentally fell into politics whilst playing Paddington?

Got my flameproof suit on but I just think in terms of information (especially as some Mumsnetters are probably using this forum as a primary source of information) it's useful to try to have a complete picture if you're thinking about how to engage with a situation that you're learning about.

Everyone comes into a situation from a different angle - I'm personally fairly uneasy with backing policies that put myself and people on the breadline at risk, by a multi-millionaire with substantial assets abroad with links to a billionaire who is already sanctioned by the EU and the US (awaits flaming).

(am I the only one who is hunting down a source of "unbiased news" regularly?)

I'm sure the regular media is aware of this and when it suits the narrative/story arc they'll bring it up again.

Guardian link

Seems that Putin is surrounded by people also involved in dodgy dealings.

Who'da thunk it!?

Twinstudy · 08/03/2022 23:05

I think if an unknown party is taking the lead in making significant requests from other nations that will affect the day-to-day lives of their inhabitants they should be under scrutiny, yes.

I'm pretty sure NATO know more about him that can be gleaned from your guardian articles 😂

Hope that sets your mind at ease

noblegiraffe · 08/03/2022 23:05

We're also not hearing any Ukrainian voices who are or were anti-Zelensky.

Do you think that they might have other, more pressing issues to talk about right now?

You have completely failed to explain why any of this is relevant, as if the huge global support for Ukraine rests entirely on the credibility of its president and not disgust, horror and fear of escalation due to THE INVASION OF UKRAINE BY PUTIN.

MaddyMagellan · 08/03/2022 23:05

Why would a Russian bot care about a website dedicated to random chat about parking places and debates about school places?

If that's your summary of Mumsnet then I'm not sure I can take anything else you say seriously.

dudsville · 08/03/2022 23:06

Are you trying to say he's not a Saint? Does one have to be in order to defend unjust actions by a foreign government against one own?

noblegiraffe · 08/03/2022 23:06

Russian bots were also quite interested in MN when the Skripals were poisoned. It was noticeable.

JeepSleeHack · 08/03/2022 23:07

We're also not hearing any Ukrainian voices who are or were anti-Zelensky.

I've heard many interviews with Ukrainians i saying they didn't used to be a fan but now they are.

Amrapaali · 08/03/2022 23:07

Heh good luck with this thread OP Grin you will be bullied, pelted with personal insults, your intelligence questioned and much more.

If you are posting in good faith, I'd say just let your links stand. It is good for everyone to know as much as you they can about an important issue. And make up their own minds. Do not try to debate your links. your thread will be derailed by hyperbole.

As for people asking what is the relevance: there is none.

But OP has an important point to make. Many Western countries are also asked to make big sacrifices. Diesel was 151 last week. It is 170 today. I was repeatedly told on my previous thread "UK is not at war with Russia". Really? It doesn't feel that way.

This doesn't mean we are blind to the hundreds of people being killed. We are just looking at what is coming down the tracks. Even the UK government while wiping tears, giving rousing speeches and standing ovations is being cautious and pragmatic (many say cruel) in insisting on visas for Ukrainian refugees.

This is why many other countries are trying to stay out of the whole conflict.

(speaking of popularity, Tony Blair was Mr 93% for a time according to the Independent).

We're also not hearing any Ukrainian voices who are or were anti-Zelensky.

There's a war on, don't you know.

They might be busy, y'know defending their homeland, stuck in a basement sheltering from Russian bombs or trying to find accomodation in a strange land.

But do crack on with that full on wickerman of an argument.

SandyStrawToad · 08/03/2022 23:09

For me, there's a difference between "someone who worked in a good job for ten years and partnered up with someone similar/or bought a London house and suddenly they were a millionaire" and "super-rich powerful different world" person.

This is another link, from late last year.

emerging-europe.com/news/why-ukraines-anti-oligarch-bill-is-so-problematic/

I do think there's a difference between that and the "Paddington Bear comedian" the media is currently presenting.

Shame on you OP.

No one thinks Zelensky is a saint. His quantum of goodness is not the point.

The point is people like most of us escaping for their lives. I can't imagine the horror of it.

RedToothBrush · 08/03/2022 23:10

Putin: I am not invading Ukraine
OP: I am not a bot

I think we have definitive proof here of good faith.

luxxlisbon · 08/03/2022 23:10

We're also not hearing any Ukrainian voices who are or were anti-Zelensky.

Shocking. It’s almost as if they have bigger fish to fry now they are being invaded by foreign military and are being displaced from their homes in their hundreds of thousands, worried about their homes, their country, the safety of their family.

I didn’t vote for Boris nor have I been satisfied with his running of the country but I can’t say my focus would be shouting about his dodgy PPE contracts if we were being invaded.

JuliaSways · 08/03/2022 23:11

What are your views on Putin @SandyStrawToad?

Twinstudy · 08/03/2022 23:11

We're also not hearing any Ukrainian voices who are or were anti-Zelensky.

I have a Ukrainian friend who lives here. She's wasnt a fan, thought he was a bit of a joke tbh. She's totally changed her mind on him.

She's also distraught and terrified for her family who are still in Ukraine. I doubt she could care less where he keeps his money. Not that I'd insult her by asking.

So he's not credible cos he was Paddington.

Okkkkayyy then.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/03/2022 23:12

Is this the new thing after Vaccinations are Bill Gates' way of taking over the world conspiracy?

I'd be more surprised if a politician wasn't doing very nicely for themselves. However, when they aren't the ones firing at a bloody huge lump of nuclear waste to make some sort of fucking point, they come out the wash as being somewhat less bad/insane than the other side. Because there's dealing with a standard politician and then there's the nutjobs who are considerably more likely to leave us all in need of factor ten billion suncream one Tuesday lunchtime.

JuliaSways · 08/03/2022 23:14

Credibility based on how he has previously portrayed himself?

What about the bare chested horse whisperer?

Norgie · 08/03/2022 23:15

@SandyStrawToad What you're trying to do is start a row on here, nothing more, nothing less.
There is a war going on, people are dying and all you can take from that is to dig a bit of dirt on Zelensky to spread around.
As many on this thread have pointed out, no one cares. We're more concerned with the death and destruction and how Zelensky is risking his own life for the people who elected him.
Pathetic.

Twinstudy · 08/03/2022 23:17

Your point seems to be that because YOU didn't know anything about him before, despite it being widely reported in mainstream media, that he is misleading the world while watching his country get bombed and planning his escape to a villa in Italy when ww3 starts. And something to do with Paddington.

Is that right?

Tealightsandd · 08/03/2022 23:17

If you think our UK politicians (on both sides of the political divide) aren't doing the same, you'd be mistaken.

It is a problem, but it isn't a Zelensky specific thing. He'd be an outlier if he wasn't doing it.

JuliaSways · 08/03/2022 23:18

@RedToothBrush 😂

Suppose we should be grateful he kept his shirt on.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 08/03/2022 23:19

Surely it would be a secret villa in deepest, darkest Peru, complete with an underground vault full of marmalade?

Blah blah blah

I don't care where Zelensky has invested his money. His bravery in trying to save his country puts all other state leaders to shame
