What is the first news story you remember?

I think it was Rhys Jones murder in 2007 for me.

Inflation going through the roof and "winter of discontent." Miserable times. Year 7 was told to prepare for only working three days a week as we were fucked.

Andy and Fergie getting married. I was 6 and I remember watching it on TV and being mesmerised.

I think it was Lockerbie that I first remember

Hillsborough. I was 8.

Diana's death

Elvis dying.

Gran’s house. On the stairs when the paper came in.

I remember being sad but not really understanding why.

Piper Alpha. I went to a Catholic school and remember going to mass and singing "For those in peril on the sea" for the rig workers, I was about 7.

John Lennon dying

James Bulger I just looked it up and I would have been 10 years old. I remember crying inconsolably. I have my own kids now and that beautiful little boy still crosses my mind every now and then.

The death of Elvis Presley

1976 was a news-worthy year for me.

We had a bicentennial and I remember all the fireworks going off in my city and everything had 1776-1976 on it.

I distinctly remember watching the 1976 Olympics and watching Nadia Comaneci win the "perfect 10" in competition.

I can also remember the 1976 election between President Ford vs Jimmy Carter.

I turned 6 in 1976.

Kennedy being shot. We were watching Blue Peter or similar kids programme while my mother cooked tea. We were cross our programme was interrupted by a News Flash - and she was upset we didn't tell her (why would we, we'd not come across a News Flash before!)

Princess Diana’s death. I would of been 7. I remember coming in from school with my dad and it being on the news. The next news piece I remember vividly was 9/11

Me too. I was slightly younger but remember seeing crowds of women crying on the news and being confused by it, as I'd never heard of him.

Bloody Sunday. My dad crying and shouting at the telly.

Me too with Elvis! I was 7 and in a caravan on holiday on the Isle of Wight when my mum came running out crying!

Rachel Nickell's murder, I think. Which is weird cos I'd have been a young teenager then I think (without Googling to check the year) - weird that I don't remember anything earlier.

I remember it because the thought of her toddler witnessing it really haunted me.

I worked for the same company as her partner at the time, so sad their little boy was only very young. Whole company was very shocked.

The General Election of 1979.

The first one that really made an impact was princess Diana's death but I was 15 by then so assuming I'd heard news before then there's nothing I remember.

The moon landings. I was 3
