I think it was Rhys Jones murder in 2007 for me.

OP posts:
Jennygentle · 08/01/2021 15:27

Deep Purple smashing their guitars on stage. It was on John Craven’s Newsround. I was about 6.

Orpheline · 08/01/2021 15:28

Aberfan.

Moonwalk.

kennelmaid · 08/01/2021 15:29

The funeral of Winston Churchill, the Moors murders and the Aberfan disaster.

maybemove · 08/01/2021 15:29

I vaguely remember the OJ trial, well my parents talking about it, I don’t think I fully understood.

The Dunblane school shooting I was very invested in, we had friends and family in the area and I remember feeling so scared after that. I would have been around 10.

I also remember my parents waking me up to tell me princess Diana had died and watching the news coverage all day.

The assassination of JFK.

ShitUsername · 08/01/2021 15:31

The death of Leah Betts always stuck in my head even though I was only young at the time

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2021 15:31

Iraq war

wannabebetter · 08/01/2021 15:32

Death of Elvis - I was 7, we'd just arrived home from holiday & I remember seeing the headlines in the paper lying on the mat

rbe78 · 08/01/2021 15:32

@rbe78

The sinking of the MS Estonia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Estonia#Sinking I remember having to write a prayer for the victims in RE class - I'd have been in Year 2 looking at the date.
After this, nothing else seems to have pierced my conciousness until 1996, with the Josie Russell story (even more horrific than my childhood memory of it, having just googled it), then Princess Diana and the general election in 1997.

Dunblane- I remember others before but Dunblane is close to home

I was same age and remember every news article and video they showed us at school. Her family were amazing at wanting to get the message out there.

Assination of Kennedy November 1963.
Coronation day June 1953.

ChipsAndDip · 08/01/2021 15:34

I remember seeing 9/11 on the tv but not really understanding, I was 7.

The first one I took notice off was 7/7 bombings - it was my first taster session at high school and we walked into the one of the history class rooms and the teacher was asking us about it

TH22 · 08/01/2021 15:35

Death of Diana...

NovemberR · 08/01/2021 15:35

I'm so old, reading these!

Probably the death of Elvis because I remember them putting an Elvis film on the tv every morning of the summer holidays. (1977)

LoveACockatoo · 08/01/2021 15:35

Elvis dying

AdultHumanFemale · 08/01/2021 15:36

Famine in Biafra.

AgeLikeWine · 08/01/2021 15:36

I have sketchy memories of the 1976 heatwave & drought, but the first big news event that I properly remember was the death of Elvis Presley in 1977.

It’s probably difficult for people born after he died to understand the impact & magnitude of this, but he was a cultural icon, by far the biggest star and the most famous person on the planet at the time, and the news of his death at 42 stunned the world.

digthroughtheditches · 08/01/2021 15:37

James Bulger. God rest his little soul.

FenEel · 08/01/2021 15:38

H'mm, a constant succession of pandas having, or not having babies and people breaking the record for number of dominoes in a domino run, or failing to because a mouse had got in over night and knocked it over. All courtesy of Newsround.
However, proper news stories it looks like I was 10 before anything made a proper impact on me as I clearly remember Chernobyl, the shuttle explosion, the Herald of Free Enterprise and the printers strike in Wapping, all from 1986/7. Before that I can't be sure whether I am remembering finding out about things at a later date - the miners strike, the Falklands, the Brighton hotel bombing, I feel like I remember those happening but may well be remembering seeing later coverage.
I do remember the famine in Ethiopia of course, but how could you not - I probably saw images on the Band Aid video not the news.

TisConfusion · 08/01/2021 15:38

Came on to say the death of Princess Diana. I was 7 and on a UK holiday at the time and remember my parents being really shocked.

Edgeoftheledge · 08/01/2021 15:38
