TheVanguardSix, yes, thinking of that time now, I still feel this sense of gut-wrenching fear. And I was only six.

Maskedcrusader · 09/01/2021 03:46

Falklands war for me to. My dad was in the Royal Marines & I didn't know he was going until we woke up for school in the morning and he had gone in the night.

squeekums · 09/01/2021 04:19

Peter Philip's (Queens grandson) being born. I was 4 and in Reception at school, It was announced in class that Princess Anne had had a baby, and we had to guess his name. I guessed William!

StealthRoast · 09/01/2021 04:33

Live Aid, early 80’s I was around 3/4.

Other news that I vividly remember-

Zeebrugge disaster
Hillsborough ( I’m from Liverpool)
The murder of Sarah Harper in 1988 as we were both 10 years old at the time Sad

ScreamingBeans · 09/01/2021 07:08

Jeremy Thorpe murdering a gay dog.

That's how I vaguely perceived it anyway.

OutComeTheWolves · 09/01/2021 07:10

The Berlin Wall falling. I still find it crazy that it existed in my lifetime.

Mybobowler · 09/01/2021 07:16

Death of Diana - I was 7. I still remember it really clearly. I'd woken up early and took myself downstairs to watch TV. All the channels were showing the news and even though I wasn't sure what had happened, I remember thinking it must be a big deal and going to wake my mum up.

OutComeTheWolves · 09/01/2021 07:18

This is a great thread op. One thing I love about the This is England TV series and film is the news montages that Shane Meadows does. I think they really give a sense of the time and the issues that were causing unrest.

SimonJT · 09/01/2021 07:23

9/11

Our school decided to show us videos in assembly which wasn’t entirely appropriate. It had a big impact on my family and community in the following years.

Apart from that I don’t really remember many news stories from my childhood.

Seasaltyhair · 09/01/2021 07:30

Polar bear were starting to roam in to the towns and eat peoples rubbish as the ice caps were melting. Must have been about 1985

ouchmyfeet · 09/01/2021 08:17

Thatcher going

whatswithtodaytoday · 09/01/2021 08:20

The King's Cross fire. I would have been just turned six, so young to remember a news story I think, but we used to go to London a lot so it must have struck a chord.

Buttybach · 09/01/2021 08:21

Mine was the fire at kings cross train station

Buttybach · 09/01/2021 08:22

I was 9 when the kings cross fire happened but remember it very vividly

HedgieHog · 09/01/2021 08:25

Miners strikes as we had to cut out the newspaper cuttings as a project in primary school but actually watching the news and being affected was Hillsborough, coming in from a day in town with mates to a friends house and us sitting round the tv
Working abroad do not tv was 911 a colleague came and got me from work to his next door which had a big tv and remember watching in shock

wowfudge · 09/01/2021 08:29

I remember hearing on the kitchen radio about Elvis dying. I was talking to my mum whilst she cooked tea.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 09/01/2021 08:34

Hillsborough. Lived in the north west at the time and my brother was a Liverpool fan. I remember the football pitch covered in flowers and then playing ‘you’ll never walk alone’ over the footage. I would have been 5

serialnamechange · 09/01/2021 08:45

I definitely remember the Berlin Wall coming down - I was about 8 years.
The next after that was the gulf war when I was about 9. We were living abroad and I remember the new reports and the feeling of fear that we may need to leave.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 09/01/2021 09:19

Charles and Diana’s wedding.

coronafiona · 09/01/2021 09:28

Something about mining, unions and Maggie

Marley20 · 09/01/2021 09:32

The sinking of the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland 1985, I was 8. No idea why that one but it was all over the news and really shocked everyone at the time.

BrowncoatWaffles · 09/01/2021 09:33

The death of Tommy Cooper on Live at the Palladium. I was watching it with my parents, aged 4, saw him go off stage and them cut to adverts abruptly. My parents got the paper delivered and seeing the front page the following day and then asking them to explain what had happened.

Afeckinchoo · 09/01/2021 09:42

The Zeebrugge disaster. We went on ferries to Calais for our camping holidays and I was terrified after that happened.

Blowingagale · 09/01/2021 09:44

The miners strike
