Oh Dear this is all very sad.

Jezebeltheharlot · 10/09/2007 22:36

I had to namechange to post this in the first place because of all the Mumsnetters I knew would kick off and 'register their distaste'

It is newsworthy and if I hadnt posted it then someone else would.

I hope that there is some logical reason as to why her full DNA was in the car and that the parents are in no way responsible. I really do.

I would have been surprised tho if I had come on Mumsnet tonight and not seen this thread on 'In the News'

So stop being witch hunters and dont open the thread if you dont like it. And dont be rude to people if you dont want to be deleted.

why is it distastefull to discuss a very large news story?

we would all discuss the london bombings, or 9/11. i am sure we would all add our opinions on a major drugs haul, or a new bill being put through parliament.

this is news, it is a major murder/abduiction case and is all over every news programme right now.

if Mn was not to have threads on the subject it would be a very large elephant in a very small room.

Mercy · 10/09/2007 22:37

Is that really the reason

Can I call you a weirdo, Sophable?

auntyspan · 10/09/2007 22:37

Thanks Quint - hadn't seen the Guardian article but makes sense now.

quint · 10/09/2007 22:37

I don;t think that people are saying they don;t like the news, they are saying that they don;t like all the speculation and gossip that goes on on most of these threads.

I agree that all the fighting and namecalling should stop as it is helping no one

policywonk · 10/09/2007 22:38

'Cunt' stays undeleted if no-one complains

If someone complains about 'weirdos', MN have to consider whether it's a term of abuse

Which it is, albeit a fairly mild one

The post was deleted because someone complained.

elasticbandstand · 10/09/2007 22:38

the disappearance of a 4 year old girl is obviously an extremely EMOTIVE subject.

Heathcliffscathy · 10/09/2007 22:39

go for it mercy. it is the truth.

McEdam · 10/09/2007 22:39

Speculation and gossip is putting it very, very mildly. Full blown rehash of the Salem witch trials would be more like it.

Honneybunny · 10/09/2007 22:40

Jezebel, the simple explanation for Madeleine's DNA to be present int the car is that, when it comes to the partial/full DNA match as several other posters have pointed out, all you need is a couple of skin cells (this is how sensitive these methods are, and -yes- i do know what i am talking about..). These could easily have been lurking around in Madeleine's clothes, toys, shoes, and (sun)hats.

OneTrickMummy · 10/09/2007 22:41

There is still nothing to speculate about!

Read this carefully before levelling accusations at the McCanns:

From the Science Editor of Observer:
"Scientists may have found her DNA profile in the car her parents were hiring 25 days after she went missing but that tells them nothing about the source of that DNA. A few skin cells from one of Madeleine's toys, such as her 'cuddle cat' which has been carried around by Kate Mccann, could have fallen into the vehicle, for example"

A source close to the Portuguese and British police, in the Observer: "dismissed as 'simply wrong' recent media reports that blood had been found in the car"
"The source said that the DNA from the rental car had come from the interior of the vehicle and not from blood....it 'could have come from any item (such as) clothing, which madeleine had contact with before she went missing"

From the Observer: "Portuguese police, manwhile, last night described as 'absolutely absurd' reports that Kate McCann was offered a plea bargain...The McCanns Portuguese lawyer Carlos Pinto de Abreu, said that the newspaper reports were due to a 'misunderstanding' that had arisen during questioning" .

From the guardian's special feature on the status of Arguido:
"A person of interest to a Portuguese Inquiry....For Portuguese police to ask questions which imply suspicion they are legally compelled to declare the suspect as a formal suspect (which gives them some legal protection). .....Being an arguido does not necessarily signify any degree of guilt.
Registering distaste for accusations and speculation based on what is clearly nothing more than 'helping police with their enquiries'

Registering my distaste.

quint · 10/09/2007 22:44

Another point to make is how on earth do people who think that the parents killed Maddy think that they managed to get her body into the car and move her with the world's media and police focused on them so heavily

McEdam · 10/09/2007 22:44

Actually, can anyone who really, really, really wants to discuss every twist and turn of rumour and counter-rumour please just read The Crucible by Arthur Miller, first? You'll find it just as mesmerising and horrifying, I promise you. info here

Mercy · 10/09/2007 22:44

Policywonk, interesting. So a post or thread will only get deleted if someone presses the red button.............

So a personal attack may deleted, but half-baked shit-stirring speculative conspiracy theories may not?

Honneybunny · 10/09/2007 22:44

ah yes, also

Registering my distaste.

Jezebeltheharlot · 10/09/2007 22:44

so why open the post and bump it again ?

OP posts:
Desiderata · 10/09/2007 22:45

I agree with the last couple of posts.

Broadly speaking, I agree with Aitch's thread. But I cannot understand why, should the DNA prove to be Madeleine's, people should not discuss it if facts are brought to the table.

Agreed, this may be a long time a'coming, but let's not have a blanket ban on the subject.

OneTrickMummy · 10/09/2007 22:47

McEdam - from memory, and without Googling:
De-oxy-ribonucleiic acid!

2mum · 10/09/2007 22:47

I think the best thing would be to have two seperate threads. One for people who are for the McCanns and one for people against the McCanns as this is just causing arguments as we all have different opinions. Why can we not do that?

kiskidee · 10/09/2007 22:47

no, Davina, you aren't the only one. I find the behaviour of both camps silly to say the least. both seem hysterical to me.

Jezebeltheharlot · 10/09/2007 22:48

Oh blimey do not suggest that as each will spill into the other and there will be a blood bath!!

OP posts:
2mum · 10/09/2007 22:48

Its only a suggestion!

UCM · 10/09/2007 22:48

I am just hoping that the press never ever quote 'UCM is that you?' as an alternative funny post by some poor woman with a problem. I really am. Can you imagine;

'This website borders on the serious to the absurd, for example one woman claimed to have a vaginal problem and it was fairly obvious to all that she hadn't changed her name'.
