I read in Oliver James' book "They F**k You Up" that you are much more likely to be a sex offender if you have been sexually abused yourself. Sexual violence, like other kinds of violence, begets only more violence.

It's a hard thing to be an advocate of very severe punishment when you realise that the perpetrators of abuse are also its victims. Somewhere the cycle has to be broken. I think locking up and rehabiliation for the offenders has to be allied with looking at those who are likely to offend and pre-habilitating (if such a work exists) to make sure they don't.
