Toddler fallen down 100m hole and the rescue efforts

I searched but couldn’t find a thread on this. It’s one of the most harrowing news stories I’ve read in a while and I can’t keep my mind off it for long.

Has anyone been following the rescue efforts for the two year old who fell down a 25cm x 100m borehole. I can’t stop thinking about that poor poor family, he fell down last Sunday. They are frantically drilling hoping he may still be alive. His older brother died suddenly of a heart attack aged 3 whilst running on a beach not long ago too.

No two-year-old is going to survive that long without food and water. He can’t possibly be alive.

I wonder why we’re being sold this as a possibility ?

golondrina · 25/01/2019 21:35

I'm in Spain and it's been on all the news. They are a few centimetres away now, but it's cuartz and they've been having to use explosives as it's too hard to dig. But have to be v careful with the explosives the closer they get. They've been doing "microexplosions" the closer they get.
It's highly unlikely he's still alive.
At the beginning they found a blockage 75 m down, of wet sand that had caved in and that's where the sweets were.

Coppermine · 25/01/2019 21:36

I'm not sure anyone is trying to sell it.

I think at the start when he first fell there was no confirmation of whether he had survived or not, and it very much could have been possible he was alive, and they started the rescue. But day by day there were delays, at what point do you say 'he has to be dead now' when you have no confirmation, 3 days, 4 days, 7 days? I'm pretty sure everyone will be expecting that he hasn't survived now. But that doesn't mean people can't hope and pray for some sort of miracle.

brizzledrizzle · 25/01/2019 21:37

I expect that people are thinking he may be alive because of the football team in the Thai caves even though that was a different situation.

Coppermine · 25/01/2019 21:38

golondrina you may be able to answer a question I have, what role do civil guards have? Are they like police? I read that once the miners have finished the tunnel, it will be civil guards that go in to get Julen? I'm not sure what meaning this has.

golondrina · 25/01/2019 21:45

There are 3 branches of police in Spain: guardia civil, policia nacional and policia local.
Policia local are local police and deal with mostly local issues, minor crimes, traffic etc.
Policia nacional are for crimes public order in big cities, anti-riot police
Guardia civil deal with traffic, rural stuff, highways, patrols, drug trafficking

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_enforcement_in_Spain

Then there's protección civil which is like emergency/disaster coordination/prevention

golondrina · 25/01/2019 21:46

It would probably be guardia civil as it's a rural area.

Sproutsandall · 25/01/2019 21:49

The Thai boys was a very different situation. They had access to water and were a lot older.

I don’t see any possible way that he can be still alive and yet the media are still presenting the situation as if there’s a strong possibility he is. I just find it very curious.

golondrina · 25/01/2019 21:52

I wouldn't say the Spanish media is presenting it like that. In fact I've just read an article with a paediatrician talking about the difficulty of surviving those conditions for so long, especially for a child.

brizzledrizzle · 25/01/2019 21:56

Is it something to do with a religious hoping for a miracle? Is Spain quite a devout Catholic country or is it more secular like the UK?

golondrina · 25/01/2019 22:02

Not devoutly catholic, no.

Jenasaurus · 25/01/2019 22:15

Ive been following it on this link

www.websleuths.com/forums/threads/spain-julen-rosello-2-fell-into-narrow-and-deep-borehole-totalán-13-jan-2019.412626/page-52

They are saying 45 mins away, I cant imagine he is alive, but I hope if he isn't, that they can show he went quickly, the thought of that little mite alone in the dark and cold for days is somehow worse then the alternative.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 25/01/2019 22:52

They're doing another mini explosion so that's 5 now

Jenasaurus · 25/01/2019 22:56

yes I just read that as well. Do they have to get extra explosives again, I hope they brought more when they got the other ones, or that's another delay :(

BowBeau · 25/01/2019 22:59

Poor little soul, it makes my heart ache to think what he’s gone through. Hope they reach him soon even though I’m not holding out hope of him being alive.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 25/01/2019 23:01

I think it's sadly highly unlikely at this point that he is alive as much as I hope he is. I'm sorry for the person who will find Julen as well. Sad

MadeForThis · 25/01/2019 23:01

Can't even begin to imagine how traumatised the family must be. Just thinking about him being stuck alone has me in tears.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 25/01/2019 23:03

I hurt thinking of him being frightened down there or suffering Sad this is so so awful

Jenasaurus · 25/01/2019 23:03

I was thinking about his chances of survival, its a long fall and then no food and water. My mum lasted 9 days without food and water at the end of her life which was considered exceptional and totally different circumstances but I don't see how he could survive 12 days without water. Poor little baby, and his family. I hope they find him tonight, it must be hard, not knowing

ByeGermsByeWorries · 25/01/2019 23:06

They must be losing their minds.

CoffeeTableBook · 25/01/2019 23:08

Sadly, his father said that he stopped hearing the cries after a few hours on the very first day.

I think that tells its own story Sad

WhereAreAllTheUsernames · 25/01/2019 23:08

This is truly the stuff of nightmares! The poor child must have been so scared, it's unbearable to think about.

I'm praying for a miracle Thanks

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 25/01/2019 23:14

We aren’t hearing anything about it over here either (Canada) so I’m posting here for updates. Poor little boy.

chocohol · 25/01/2019 23:15

I have been refreshing google on this story since it happened. Glad to have found this thread now. I can't get it out of my head. I'm hoping the damp conditions down there would have helped somehow against dehydration.

ByeGermsByeWorries · 25/01/2019 23:16

I don't think he'd hear Julen over the plug of earth that supposedly fell on top after Julen fell. The whole story is a mess really due to so many different sources. It hasn't been very well covered really.
