Toddler fallen down 100m hole and the rescue efforts

I searched but couldn’t find a thread on this. It’s one of the most harrowing news stories I’ve read in a while and I can’t keep my mind off it for long.

Has anyone been following the rescue efforts for the two year old who fell down a 25cm x 100m borehole. I can’t stop thinking about that poor poor family, he fell down last Sunday. They are frantically drilling hoping he may still be alive. His older brother died suddenly of a heart attack aged 3 whilst running on a beach not long ago too.

Poor boy

An hour ago they reported they should reach the lad very shortly

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/01/2019 16:29

I've read that the tunnel they're digging across will start higher up than they think he is and slope down to reach him.

In the Jessica McClure documentary the mining expert told them they mustn't do that and they had to go straight across or they would run the risk of debris falling down/hole collapsing down on top of her.

Coppermine · 24/01/2019 16:33

Oh I understood it to be lower than him and sloping up towards him, but some things are probably getting lost in translation

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/01/2019 16:41

Oh hopefully then because that's the right way to do it. I'd like to think someone has watched a documentary or read an overview of the McClure rescue!

This states the first miner was lowered in to the shaft at 4pm

Coppermine · 24/01/2019 17:34

Yes I would have hoped so. Something that I've wondered about, in Jessica's film they eventually used a high power water jet thing that broke the hard rock very quickly. Initially they were reluctant to use it as it is dangerous due to slicing a person if it came in contact with them (particularly jessica). But they did use it in the end but there has been no mention of that kind of technology here. Maybe they don't have access to enough water or wouldn't be able to use as deeply. She was only around 7 meters deep.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/01/2019 18:04

I used to use water jetting. I might be wrong but I would guess the longer the hose needed for such a depth the more pressure you lose. So chances are it won't be effective.

brizzledrizzle · 24/01/2019 19:59

The police have taken statements from his parents and are investigating how he came to fall in the hole.

Tidythatmess · 24/01/2019 20:12

I have been following this case all week and wondering why it's not featuring more in UK news?! Finding it very upsetting though, it's hard to imagine.

Frenchcroissant · 24/01/2019 20:15

I read today in Spanish press than apparently the dad killed the boy and threw it in the hole.... We won't know what happened till they get the boy though.

brizzledrizzle · 24/01/2019 20:29

If that's what has happened then that's awful. The family has been through so much already.

MadeForThis · 24/01/2019 20:51

It's sounds awful but if the poor wee boy is dead I hope he was killed quickly and thrown down the hole rather than falling down and suffering down there.

Is that a horrible thought?

brizzledrizzle · 24/01/2019 21:03

It's a horrible situation but not a horrible thought IMO, I think it's understandable to think that rather than him suffering for hours or days.

Tidythatmess · 24/01/2019 22:08

I can't bear to think of him suffering. There have been postcards drawn to show support for him, saying "we're coming for you" and pictures of a little boy waiting surrounded by hearts. It's upsetting even to think about it. I so wish there was a chance of finding him safe.

KittensAndCake · 24/01/2019 22:27

If this is true then I hope they reinvestigate how their first child died.

NicoAndTheNiners · 24/01/2019 22:43

I must admit that thought did cross my mind, especially in view of the older child dying....but then I thought that's an awful thing to wonder. If it's true then his cousin and cousins gf must be covering up for him as they said they saw him go down the hole? Hopefully it's just press speculation. But then yes, maybe better if he's died quickly than died stuck down a hole.

Rainyshowers · 25/01/2019 12:03

Any news today?

ShesABelter · 25/01/2019 12:21

How could the dad kill him and throw him down when the mum and dad's cousin were also there and the cousin was apparently closest. The dad just happened to come across a random bore hole that had just been dug.

Seems unlikely and the oldest boy would definitely of had a post mortem done to die at such a young age.

Still digging horizontally across.

Coppermine · 25/01/2019 13:57

They are 2.5 meters across now. I just hope when they access the borehole they can actually reach him.

EinsteinsAbsolutelySoberHCB · 25/01/2019 16:36

3.15 metres now.

GirlInTheDirtyShirt · 25/01/2019 16:41

I live in Spain and have been following the story. There aren't investigations about the dad killing the boy and throwing him down. What happened (based on news reports plus what I've heard from people who know the family) is this: the family went to spend the day in the countryside area, which has a couple of boreholes that have been drilled by people looking for water. This borehole in particular wasn't done with permits, but it was covered over with a big rock by the person who drilled it and therefore shouldn't have been accessible. Unsubstantiated info says that the dad of the child and his brother were hiding drugs in the hole to later sell, and this is why the rock covering the hole was moved. The little boy fell down into it (it's a very narrow hole, but he only weighs 11kg) and hopefully died immediately, because the alternative of him being down there, cold and alone and scared, for days until finally succumbing, is too much to deal with. The parents did lose another child - he died of sudden heart failure as a result of an underlying health condition that wasn't picked up on. We're all glued to the news here, hoping that at least they can get the little boy out and return him to his family and to his final resting place. :(

Coppermine · 25/01/2019 16:46

So close. I've just read on El Pais they are now digging through softer rock so it's going a bit quicker now, but of course they don't know what else is to come.

I really hope he doesn't have to spend another night in that well. Poor boy.

Yulebealrite · 25/01/2019 16:53

Placemarking to hear what happens. Poor kid and family.
