Toddler fallen down 100m hole and the rescue efforts

I searched but couldn’t find a thread on this. It’s one of the most harrowing news stories I’ve read in a while and I can’t keep my mind off it for long.

Has anyone been following the rescue efforts for the two year old who fell down a 25cm x 100m borehole. I can’t stop thinking about that poor poor family, he fell down last Sunday. They are frantically drilling hoping he may still be alive. His older brother died suddenly of a heart attack aged 3 whilst running on a beach not long ago too.

RIP little Julen. I feel sad and frustrated that this has happened. Sad

Such tragic news. I just desperately hope he passed quickly at the time of the fall.
His poor family Sad

This was the first news story I had to check when I woke up this morning. Such a sad ending, we were all holding onto that glimmer of hope that a miracle may have happened. We can only hope that the poor boy was knocked unconscious during the fall meaning that he didn't have to go through any suffering. RIP xx

Have just read the latest updates on the El Mundo site, in DSpanish.

Rescuers found the body of the child at 1.25am on Saturday, local time. It is now a police investigation rather than a rescue attempt. The parents are being investigated about the disappearance of the child. The body has been transferred to Malaga for an autopsy. Press conference at 9am this morning (8am UK time). Child was found at a depth of 71m. No further details have been released.

Rescue effort involved 300 people working around the clock. Hole was only 25cm in diameter. Very difficult rescue operation given the hardness of the ground.

Very sad story all round.

The parents are being investigated? Or do you mean interviewed?

MacarenaFerreiro · 26/01/2019 07:51

The Spanish says : " Hay que recordar que tras la denuncia de los padres se mantiene abierta una investigación judicial por la desaparición del menor y el incidente sufrido."

I translate that as... Bear in mind that after the complaint (or report) by the parents, a police investigation about the disappearance of the child and what happened to him remains open.

So yeah, apologies for sloppy translation. It's early and I haven't had enough coffee. Police have an active investigation.

golondrina · 26/01/2019 07:55

I speak Spanish. That doesn't mean the parents are specifically being investigated though.
There are some questions about the borehole being part of preparations for illegal building and that's why earth caved in on top of the hole.

GreenandBlueButterfly · 26/01/2019 07:58

The article doesn't say the parents are being investigated. It says the investigation is still open. It's normal procedure to report any incident to the Guardia civil. They "open an investigation". That's what it's called, even if it's clear what's happened. This investigation will be closed soon, as soon as the facts are established.

It doesn't mean there's any suspicion on the parents

PointlessUsername · 26/01/2019 08:22

Poor boy, poor parents.
So sad. Rip Julen.

Karwomannghia · 26/01/2019 08:32

Seeing the diagram I don’t he will have suffered long with such a deep drop.

Ofitck · 26/01/2019 08:36

Descansa en paz chiquitín.

I’m in Spain and haven’t read anything of the sort, the investigation is into why there was a borehole (and generally any police report (denuncia). When I lost DS for half an hour (awful but ended well) there was a guardia civil investigation and conclusion. It’s procedure, they’re very thorough.

The miners did an incredible job and the village showed so much love and support for the family. It’s utterly heartbreaking

The poor devastated family.Sad

KittensAndCake · 26/01/2019 10:08

Poor baby, let's hope it was quick.
I've just read also that they had a 3rd child but had to abort at nearly full term for medical reasons, don't know how true that is though.

CallingFromLondon · 26/01/2019 10:26

I really, really cried at that. I've recently come out of a dark fog of PND. Suddenly stories like this make me think of my own toddler and I'm in bits Thanks

I hope he didn't suffer. It just makes you want to hold your own child a little tighter, doesn't it?

oopslateagain · 26/01/2019 11:42

The latest is that they think he had a 'free fall' until he reached the bottom, so thank god it was probably quick for him. Poor lad, and I can't bear to think of the parents, they must be devastated.

And the miners, they must have known there was no hope but to work for so long and so hard, and then find his little body, they'll never be able to forget that moment Sad

Xenia · 27/01/2019 09:03

So sad. I read a 2000 diary entry yesterday. One 18 month year old twin shut me and his twin out of the house. I wrote it was the worst 15 minutes I had had for years. He took himself upstairs, cried and then came downstairs. I knew someone was coming to our house with keys at 8.30am anyway so just waited. He was fine when I got in but I can just imagine the feelings of the Spanish parents. 1000 x worse. I wrote I would never even go outside the front door to bring the milk ever again if one of the toddler twins were inside the house.

GenericHamster · 28/01/2019 16:17

Devastating. This may be wrong in tone for this thread but I found this news article today which shows that miracles do sometimes happen:

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jan/28/three-year-old-boy-missing-in-woods-for-two-days-says-friendly-bear-kept-him-safe?CMP=share_btn_tw

I just thought I'd post it because I know what it's like to have a negative story weighing on your mind when you have a little one. I do it all the time :(

KittensAndCake · 28/01/2019 16:31

Aw that made me cry, hope the bear was real 🐻

WhereAreAllTheUsernames · 29/01/2019 06:58

If that's true about the bear, that's amazing. I wish poor Julen could have had a happy ending too!
