For those of you who are interested - and don't want any arguing - the news update according to Sky

  • police are now looking for a man seen in a white van
  • they have an e-fit of him
  • also want to interview an american who lives locally who owns a white van and hasn't been seen for the last few days
  • reward of £1.5M has been offered by the News of the World

Aloha I do agree with you to a large extent, but I do think that this need to give out all info to the public is unnecessary. Madeleine hasn?t been found, the owner of a villa hasn?t been arrested, so why do we need to know that his name is Robert Murrat and that he takes his glass eye out at parties? Why do we need to see pictures of the house where his ex-wife and child live? Reality is that we don?t. And if he is released without charge and it turns out he had nothing to do with Madeleine?s disappearance, will the media make a headline apology and bring out character witnesses to tell what a nice guy he really is? Course they won?t.

Also, given that the media publish so much detail about suspects now how is it possible to get an unbiased jury and how do people ever get a fair trial?

Ian Huntley was guilty of the murder of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, but even if he?d been found not guilty, he?d been tried and sentenced by the media before he even went to court. We already knew where he lived, and all about his past.. and we have to select our juries from people who almost certainly have access to the media before they are selected, so how can one be sure that jurers can be totally unbiased?

I?m all for open trials, but I certainly don?t think any info should be released until a case comes to trial.

quietmouse · 15/05/2007 10:23

he has now be named formally as a suspect....

LaCerbiatta · 15/05/2007 10:25

Some news on the portuguese press today: Robert Murat visited child porn sites and video tapes were taken from the house. Also his daughter is called Madeleine, I don't know if this was reported here or not.

Just saw some breaking news: Murat has been accused!

compo · 15/05/2007 10:26

he hasn't been accused.
He's officailly a suspect.

littlemissbossy · 15/05/2007 10:26

QM who has said he is a suspect?

OP posts:
compo · 15/05/2007 10:27

Portugese police

reece · 15/05/2007 10:27

Doesn't look like they are letting go of their suspicions of him yet. There must be more to this.......
How on earth did Madeline's parents get through last night??

LIZS · 15/05/2007 10:28

JARM · 15/05/2007 10:28

Wolfgirl · 15/05/2007 10:29

I cant bear it all..... where is the poor little lamb! dear God, please let her be safe!

LaCerbiatta · 15/05/2007 10:32

Just as a reply to all your comments criticising the police: it's being reported on the news that the police were on to this guy long before the mirror journalist mentioned hie to them. Also, they've been trying to deviate attention from him and the local area by feeding 'wrong' clues and leads to media. They say the british press has actually been quite helpful in deviating peoples attention from the local area.
They're not completely stupid you know?

And also, british police the best in the world????? Yeah, right! Not a very good record for the best in the world....

ThatBeetroot · 15/05/2007 10:33

accused? of what

ChocolateFace · 15/05/2007 10:34

I've got no TV access, any more news?

compo · 15/05/2007 10:34

tugamommy - over here we know nothing of what's on his computer or the name of his child. How do you know that?

LaCerbiatta · 15/05/2007 10:34

Portuguese websites are reporting he has been accused, not just considered a suspect.

Unless there's a wording issue here..... Maybe we need Murat to translate

compo · 15/05/2007 10:35

he hasn't been accused Beetrot. His status has been upgraded to a suspect by the Portugese police. That's all we know

ThatBeetroot · 15/05/2007 10:36

news 24 just say he has been released and have suggested that me might be a suspect but no eveidence

compo · 15/05/2007 10:36

what websites? Portugese tabloid websites?

LaCerbiatta · 15/05/2007 10:36

I am portuguese (hence the tuga!). So I read portuguese news sites and papers. MAybe the british press should do the same... I knew about the search on the house yesterday long before they did!

compo · 15/05/2007 10:36

okay, you must know more about the portugese law then. What does upgrading his status to a suspect mean then?

Wolfgirl · 15/05/2007 10:37

OK all, just my opinion, and sometimes that can be a bit of key; but this thread is not about ranting and pulling apart someone elses opinion, its about Madeleine and keeping abreast of any news. Stop making me feel like shit just because I made mention to something I believe in (sometimes). I couldnt give a monkeys if you think our force is great or not, I am concerned about Madeleine. For goodness sake, stop picking all of you. does my head in!!!!

LaCerbiatta · 15/05/2007 10:39

No, not only tabloids. Read here

'Arguido' means he will stand in a trial accused of something, but look it up in the dictionary.

Going for coffee now but will check for more updates when I come back.

P.S. - this is not a tabloid website

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 15/05/2007 10:39

the way they explained it on five live was that being named as an official suspect is similar to having been arrested on suspician of...

basically, it means that he now has more rights, he has the right to a lawyer present during questioning, he has the right to silence etc, pretty much similar to this country but just termed differently iyswim.

LilyLoo · 15/05/2007 10:40

sky potugese police have identified a suspect. Not named him but thais has been released form police.
