Watching the news just now and I can't believe my eyes. It looks absolutely horrific.

I want to think everyone got out safe, but sadly I just can't.

Some of the news reports are about alleged poor safety standards and dangerous living conditions. If that's true it just beggars belief.

I've been listening to LBC most of the day. One eye-witness this morning talked to someone on the fourth floor who was woken up by the neighbour in whose flat the fire had started. It seemed the gas had been left on and sparked the fridge electrics (am not scientifically minded) which set off the fire. The fire spread so rapidly, it seems, because of something called the Coandă effect (possibly the same as the Swiss cheese effect mentioned by a pp?), so said a firefighter with 27 years' experience who had never seen anything like it and compared it to a cross between 9/11 and the Towering Inferno.
To the person who said there would be riots because of tension in the community - have you not heard/read/watched the information about the community coming together to help in this disaster?

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/06/2017 18:11

originalbiglymavis Often a lot of companies will have a website created and designed by a web developer but then they train someone at the original company to create new pages and delete them - on wordpress sites this is so easy a child could do it. I can totally believe there are people out there who don't realise nothing on the internet is ever truly gone.

I don't know why they deleted the page, it's not my question to answer.

11122aa · 14/06/2017 18:12

I dont mean riots between sections of the community but community vs the establishment per see.

originalbiglymavis · 14/06/2017 18:13

Well I always say I could train a monkey to use WordPress.

CondensedMilkSarnies · 14/06/2017 18:18

LFB spokesman said that they had accessed all floors but stressed that they haven't actually completed a search of the whole building .

Urgent review underway of advice to stay in your flat.

SenseiWoo · 14/06/2017 18:22

There was a fire next door to us recently. We were impressed by the grim determination of the LB fire investigators to get to the bottom of things. We are awaiting their report, which apparently we can ask for under FOIA legislation.

I imagine for a horrible event like this they will pull out all the stops, without fear or favour. After all, their own people have to put themselves at risk in these places.

The Hammersmith MP Andy Slaughter has been making a fuss about the fire in the W12 block in parliament, to general indifference.

That fire was caused by one of the faulty Whirlpool tumble dryers that have been known about for a long time. He argued that it was not good enough to allow the manufacturer to effect repairs or replacements at a glacial pace when that put hundreds of people in tower blocks at risk. He wanted them forced to replace all affected machines immediately.

The sad thing is that it is easy to put things off and be complacent generally when there hasn't been a major tragedy for a long time, especially when finances are stretched. I wish we didn't have that attitude but pretty much all of us do.

Dowser · 14/06/2017 18:24

So the fire brigade rescued about 60 people.
74 in hospital.

So how many got out under their own steam.

How many couldn't get out at all?

It could be a couple of hundred.

I hope not!

those poor people.

hellokittymania · 14/06/2017 18:25

does anyone know which drop off center would be nearest to a tube station and which tube station and should I go to from the Jubilee line? I am not good with Maps, but I really want to help out in someway. I have a lot of childrens clothes, canned food, blankets and toys. I have a spare kettle as well I can give.

lazycrazyhazy · 14/06/2017 18:27

Latimer Rd and Ladbroke Grove both near but check TFL to see if open.

11122aa · 14/06/2017 18:28

Both of them are still shut. The line between Padington and Hammersmith is close. Nothing Hill Gate station is still open.

PerkingFaintly · 14/06/2017 18:31

I'd keep hold of it for today, hellokitty.

BabyHamster · 14/06/2017 18:33

Sorry if this has already been covered but didn't want to read whole thread. I'm too far away to donate blankets etc, where should I go to donate money? I know there's been a lot in the press recently about justgiving scams so want to make sure my donation will go to the victims.

RhythmAndStealth · 14/06/2017 18:44

The Evening Standard is running an appeal Baby

It's so unbelievably tragic. I feel so sad for those poor people, especially those who didn't get out. What a terrifying way to die and to know your children are going to die and you can't save them... It's heartbreaking.

Bbc 6pm news is amazing. The public response has been truly heartwarming.

Jonsnowsghost · 14/06/2017 18:53

Not sure if anyone has seen yet but the old man seen waving his jumper has been rescued after 12 hours in the building

Puzzledandpissedoff · 14/06/2017 18:53

I see there's been an absolute blizzard of crowdfunding pages set up so far

QuietCorday · 14/06/2017 18:54

DH's uncle has just been talking about this. He's a retired firefighter and says this fire is strange and unusual, and he's never seen anything like it.

Apparently, for a fire of this speed and ferocity, for flames to consume 27 floors in an hour, you are either looking at a planned arson or a gross disregard for very basic fire prevention and regulations on a series of levels.

Changedenomnom · 14/06/2017 18:56

From what I've read the London fire brigade signed off the refurbishment works in 2016. Which makes it even more confusing

NomDePlumeReloaded · 14/06/2017 18:57

The rash of crowdfunding/justgiving makes me suspicious. That's probably very cynical of me, but there are utter shitbirds who will see this as an opportunity to siphon off cash from this. I accept that the majority are probably genuine people trying to do kind things and help however they can but it should all be done via an 'official' collection that can be properly regulated.

WellThisIsShit · 14/06/2017 18:58

I hope there are some broad answers quite quickly, so the people living through this hell can at least start to build a picture of what has happening here.

Of course I know the details will not be known for a long time, and the apportioning of blame.

WellThisIsShit · 14/06/2017 19:01

Deliberate disingenuousness in posts doesn't make anyone look good, by the way.

That's their other projects.*

This company will be "in administration" within a week I expect.
