Grenfell Tower

Watching the news just now and I can't believe my eyes. It looks absolutely horrific.

I want to think everyone got out safe, but sadly I just can't.

Some of the news reports are about alleged poor safety standards and dangerous living conditions. If that's true it just beggars belief.

It does appear that yes hundreds did either escape or were rescued by the fire brigade.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/06/2017 17:28

Has anyone seen this reddit thread - Why would the refurb company of Grenfell Tower delete this web page at 4am last night?

I think a lot of balls have been dropped which has led to this tragedy, sadly I worry that some of the balls were dropped because of money.

Kokusai · 14/06/2017 17:33

12 people now confirmed dead and number still expected to rise- LFB

Reports just said that they are "confident they will find no more survivors "

I can not see the number of dead being any less than 20 or 30 :-(

That's their other projects.

What's the website that they took down? Not clear from that link...

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/06/2017 17:39

When you click on the the link, click on the title of the thread and it will take you to web archive.

But it's basically this page - <a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20170614035707/wittukgroup.co.uk/grenfell-tower-london-w11-1tq-regeneration-project/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">link

Scuffles have broken out at one of the community centres taking on the survivors and those evacuated from other buildings

wowfudge · 14/06/2017 17:41

I woke to a BBC alert about this and have made a donation today. Just horrific that not only are these people homeless with just the clothes they were dressed in, but many will have lost loved ones.

user1496484020 · 14/06/2017 17:41

Can't open whatever that link is? What was on the webpage?

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/06/2017 17:45

It's a link to web archive, which saves web pages - the page is talking about the tower and the fire safety system for the building. It was deleted at 4am this morning.

MrsDanversKnickers · 14/06/2017 17:45

Thoughts to victims and all those involved in this horrendous fire Sad

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/06/2017 17:45

allegedly

WellThisIsShit · 14/06/2017 17:51

Did that page really get taken down at 4am this morning?

What an incredibly stupid thing for them to have done, for whatever motives, be it out of fear of bad PR or fear of discovery of wrong doing.

Stupid.

DarthMaiden · 14/06/2017 17:52

I can't add much to what has already been said.

My thoughts are with those families impacted and my admiration to the firefighters Flowers

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/06/2017 17:54

At the top of the page where it says Wayback machine, if you put your mouse over the June 14 2017, it gives the timestamp of 3:57:07 as the last capture.

MissEliza · 14/06/2017 17:56

Some of the balls were dropped because of money. Possibly that and a rush to finish and sheer incompetence. We had a housing development built by a well known company constructed nearby a couple of years ago. When people moved in, they started to notice problems like dampness and mould. Surveyors found them riddled with defects like no air bricks or insulation. Apparently there are new builds up and down the country with similar problems . Corner cutting seems to becoming too common in the construction industry. But this is all speculation.
I've been reading many people on Twitter comment that council was willing to spend money on cosmetic renovations to make the building look acceptable for others but nothing on the inside to make it safer for residents. The residents had voiced their concerns about fire safety. It seems the council disregarded them.

CoolCarrie · 14/06/2017 17:56

Interesting reading that page. Well done to whoever it is as that screen shot it.

originalbiglymavis · 14/06/2017 18:00

I don't understand why they would delete a page unless it had some very insensitive info on there. It's easy enough to use a time machine site to look at old pages.

ZaphodBeeblerox · 14/06/2017 18:01

Hey @Changednomnom if it's way too early for all of us to be speculating, wasn't 4 am this morning also way too early for your ex-colleagues to be deleting web pages referencing the building?

Have you considered that the reason us everyday folk speculate so quickly in the aftermath is because we know unscrupulous people are already scrambling like mad to try to control the narrative?

Albadross · 14/06/2017 18:03

If anyone on this thread has been affected by this incident of any other major incident (terrorism, fire, riots, accidents etc.) I've set up a group for people with similar experiences to support each other on FB with a view to making a proper website in the near future. The aim is to have a pool of people who can help advocate those in the immediate aftermath using their own experiences to guide and avoid any pitfalls, and provide a safe space for people to just talk with others who understand even after the world moves on. I'll start a separate thread about it too but please spread the word.

ToastDemon · 14/06/2017 18:03

The Guardian has an article about the missing people and oh god their smiling faces Sad

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 14/06/2017 18:03

Most people don't realise that there a programmes out there which snap webpages at regular intervals, so they think if they delete something from the internet then it no longer exists.

originalbiglymavis · 14/06/2017 18:06

I use them a lot to check pages. Whoever deleted the page would know that anyone who works sites knows this.

user1467099964 · 14/06/2017 18:09

plomino-that's understandable.Flowers
