Watching the news just now and I can't believe my eyes. It looks absolutely horrific.

I want to think everyone got out safe, but sadly I just can't.

Some of the news reports are about alleged poor safety standards and dangerous living conditions. If that's true it just beggars belief.

It seems very crass to suggest that the tenants were making false, exaggerated allegations or that they are an unreliable source of information for not being 'neutral.'

These tenants have lost their homes, their possessions, many of them their lives, some made the choice to throw their young children from 9 flights high, but we shouldn't really validate their concerns according to some on this thread.

cathf · 14/06/2017 13:38

Helena, of course I can't, that was my point.
I was called out to a 'story' about a woman who had moved into furnished accommodation, and was convinced the fridge was a death trap because it was more than a year old. Obviously it wasn't a death trap and obviously most people have fridges more than one year old.
You misunderstood my post.

It is the housing crisis

I am sad and angry

I really hope whoever is responsible faces justice. Sad

CoralDreamscapes · 14/06/2017 13:40

"You cannot separate social housing from politics."

No, you can't - my point was that there is more than one political party who needs to address this - it does not, and should not, be turned into a blame game and energy wasted on accusations and defence - issues needed to be raised, addressed, visited, and rectified by all parties.

The history of this tower block is not solely within the political power of one party.

www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/familyaction/grenfell

Just donated to this - it's Family Action so looks like the most legit of all the justgiving campaigns I saw.

HelenaDove · 14/06/2017 13:41

Thats because tenants = liars KungFu Angry

CoolCarrie · 14/06/2017 13:41

And cathf, tenants associations aren't meant to be neutral ffs!
They are meant to speak on behalf of residents

sleepingdragons · 14/06/2017 13:42

RedToothBrush well said.

cathf · 14/06/2017 13:42

Don't be silly Helena.

Nananap · 14/06/2017 13:42

balence49 · 14/06/2017 13:45

I'm sure they will set up donation points in the next few days for anyone wanting to donate.

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/06/2017 13:45

Thank you kokusai and cathf

notanevilstepmother I feel that you're doing me a bit of a disservice here. I am not speculating on how these deaths occurred- there could
Be many reasons and we won't know for months if not years.

But on a discussion forum we are discussing some very significant national news as is the purpose of this board. I'm afraid I think it's unreasonable for you to try and shut that down by claiming disrespect.

helena and kungfu the management company is a TMO. A tenant management organisation. The properties are managed by the tenants. Of course there is a company around this, but tenant voice is the whole point of a TMO.

Of course, they can't run the organisation based on every tenants view as their are many complications and requirements related to managing property. But you're wrong to say tenants aren't listened to- this is the model of tenant voice.

Please stop speculating and insinuating that the action group had anything to do with this. MNHQ have already deleted posts that have done so, and I hope they will delete these new ones.

sleepingdragons · 14/06/2017 13:51

brexitstolemyfuture WTF? You too?!

What stone are these nutters crawling out from?

Kokusai · 14/06/2017 13:51

lakehouse no, just no

CoralDreamscapes · 14/06/2017 13:52

A couple of posts have referred to the Adair Tower Fire, also in North Kensington - that was caused by arson. Arsonists usually alert the fire service straight away; it's how they get their "kick" a lot of the time.

CoralDreamscapes · 14/06/2017 13:53

^^ Post in reference to why Adair Tower didn't burn instantaneously.

FreakOfNurture · 14/06/2017 13:53

Some people are the sort of tenant-blaming twats that the residents were presumably up against.

RedToothBrush · 14/06/2017 13:53

No, you can't - my point was that there is more than one political party who needs to address this - it does not, and should not, be turned into a blame game and energy wasted on accusations and defence - issues needed to be raised, addressed, visited, and rectified by all parties.

Indeed. 2009 Labour. 2010 LD/Con. 2015 Con.
All parties.

Its up to everyone to say, yes this is a politically important thing that should not be ignored, belittled or somehow justified.

Social housing has a really bad press. Around where I live the mere idea of a single shared ownership house being built has people up in arms about how it will bring down the whole area.

Its appalling. There are some really dreadful attitudes to social housing and people living in it.

Perhaps this might help some of these people see them as actual humans deserving of some really basic protections in our society.

Argeles · 14/06/2017 13:55

Nananap - I thought that too. I'm going to keep everything bagged and ready, just in case they need any further donations in the next few days. If not, I'll try and take them to a homeless shelter.
