Grenfell Tower

Watching the news just now and I can't believe my eyes. It looks absolutely horrific.

I want to think everyone got out safe, but sadly I just can't.

Some of the news reports are about alleged poor safety standards and dangerous living conditions. If that's true it just beggars belief.

I remember visiting a freind in a tower block in Denmark about 20 years ago. I was amazed to see all the flats in her block had front and back doors, with a staircase on both sides

I lived in Denmark in a top floor flat conversion where the building dated from 1777 and we had to have 2 staircases as well.

HelenaDove · 14/06/2017 13:59

There is a screenshot on Twitter saying someone is worried that going to stay with a relative or friend will disqualify or move him way down the list for emergency housing.

SerfTerf · 14/06/2017 13:59

I'm scrolling but I can't see whether @HelenaDove has posted on this thread yet. I've seen her comment knowledgeably on lax maintenance in public housing on several occasions.

This is tragic anyway, but if it turns out to be avoidable for reasons that were widely known, how much worse is that? Sad

RIP poor people x

SerfTerf · 14/06/2017 14:00

Oh what a X post!

RedToothBrush · 14/06/2017 14:01

There is now talk of a statement being called in the HoC tomorrow despite the issue with government not officially sworn in.

This guy is really pissed off they told the people to stay in their flats.

HelenaDove · 14/06/2017 14:02

Hi serf Yes ive posted Ive also shared this link Its NOT the company involved re Grenfell but its a good example of the corner cutting and attitudes towards tenants.

CoralDreamscapes · 14/06/2017 14:04

user That guy also says the Fire Brigade arrived "late" when it's been stated several times they were there within 6 minutes.

SerfTerf · 14/06/2017 14:04

Thanks I'll have a look. It's just so awful.

user1496484020 · 14/06/2017 14:06

I suppose when you're there watching the whole building go up in under five minutes (one witnesses account), 6 minutes seems like a long time.

HelenaDove · 14/06/2017 14:07

I was following this on the Guardian live feed last night. The footage is horrific I had to stop following it. It was too upsetting.

Soubriquet · 14/06/2017 14:07

The fire service couldn't have been any quicker.

They were brilliant and getting there as soon as they could.

But the fire was just too much. It erupted and spread far quicker than anyone expected it to. Nothing could have stopped it once it was raging like that.

HelenaDove · 14/06/2017 14:09

We have amazing emergency services in this country.

CoralDreamscapes · 14/06/2017 14:10

user I also think people will be utterly traumatised; it can be very difficult to hold onto perception and reality in the aftermath of trauma (I am talking from personal experience).

CoralDreamscapes · 14/06/2017 14:12

Just seen it confirmed there are 25 patients being treated in Chelsea and Westminster Burns Unit.

Kokusai · 14/06/2017 14:12

Also, it isn't just social housing.

What about the PPP / PFI fire stopping scandal that just isn't being reported anywhere as the national scandal it is?

Shit loads of hospitals, prisons, mental health units etc have NOT BEEN BUILT WITH THE SPECIFIED FIRE STOPS.

The work is being remedied in many hospitals etc but it should never have been allowed to get to this stage and it is shocking hardly anyone knows about it.

user1496484020 · 14/06/2017 14:13

I wonder did anyone get out from the upper floors?

squoosh · 14/06/2017 14:14

I haven't read any detail of the incident beyond the general facts of the matter and what's on this thread. Rolling news can be like vultures at times like this, looking for the most harrowing details to broadcast. Makes me feel like some kind of ghoulish voyeur.

HelenaDove · 14/06/2017 14:14

Koku i did not know that. Shock

CondensedMilkSarnies · 14/06/2017 14:15

Helena just read a few posts on that thread and had to stop ! Absolutely shocking that tenants are at the mercy of these people !

whatwouldrondo · 14/06/2017 14:16

I lived in a 70s tower block in Hong Kong and we had a front and back door and two staircases too.

It is utterly shocking we have third world buildings in a first world city.

I am utterly disgusted as well as upset.

One thing is that as quickly as a new venue for donations is announced it is being swamped. There is obviously a huge response from ordinary people if not from Number 10....... Angry

Lagirafe · 14/06/2017 14:16

This may be a stupid question but if we don't have the appropriate equipment for fighting fires above 10 floors or whatever why do we allow building above this height?
Surely in places like HK, Singapore etc fires at height are pretty common place?
I am asking a question and not placing blame.

HelenaDove · 14/06/2017 14:18

Has anyone from the council or tenant management company commented yet?

Lagirafe · 14/06/2017 14:19

The BBC had the leader of the council but I haven't seen anyone from the management company Helena

CondensedMilkSarnies · 14/06/2017 14:19

Lagirafe I think high rise buildings have dry risers so the FB can pump water to upper floors.
