I've just read on the net about the 2 year old who was sexually assulte and murdered. why does this have to happen? I'm very upset as i'm sure you all will be once you hear/read about this. Have a look at \link{http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/west_yorkshire/6356009.stm}

i'm not too bothered about the cost actually. would be money well spent, imo, to keep more children safe.

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 12:22

How would it keep children safer than life imprisonment?

Socci, does the CJS really work that well? What a fabulous nation we must be that we can rely so strongly on our fair and just system and not have to resort to instinct and emotion.

We are not robots, we do feel in cases like this and I would be considerably more worried if we didn't. Have a heart. I know some may be the 'string 'em up' brigade but I think for the most part we are justifiably outraged human beings. Nothing wrong with that.

TaylorsMummy · 14/02/2007 12:23

if life meant life then fine. would have to be on bare rations though

but in this country you just don't know what life means anymore.

mumto3girls · 14/02/2007 12:24

Prisoners are allowed limited items sent in, and these do NOT include videos or DVD's. The only things they can watch have to be purchased from the prison shop or borrowed gfrom the library. I'm guessing 'Debbie Does Dallas' is not in the top ten video lists...

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 12:24

Have any of you been on a jury in a murder trial? You would be surprised how well the system does work and how seriously people take it, IMO.

Agree with Socci. People who have been affected by things like this can inform policy, but they shouldn't be responsible for making final decisions on judicial procedure.

TaylorsMummy · 14/02/2007 12:25

well in that case the stuff must come from the inside because I know for a fact that some (maybe not all) prisoners have access to porn

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 14/02/2007 12:29

Oh dear, Socci. Now there's a suggestion. That having a reaction to something so wicked implies nothing more than animal instinct. Actually, I think you will find we are all animals. We just put ourselves on a bit of a pedestal.

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 12:30

Ah, yes, let's kill them if they've access to pornography.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 14/02/2007 12:31

What should have just been a thread to collectively offer sympathy to a poor, murdered innocent has become a slanging match. I'm off.

mumto3girls · 14/02/2007 12:36

There was not a lot of sympathy mentioned ( although definitely felt) it was more anger and revulsion...

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 12:37

Yes, the sympathy lasted 17 minutes, I think.

hunkermunker · 14/02/2007 12:37

Although I certainly feel it in spades.

mumto3girls · 14/02/2007 12:38

I don't mean we don't all feel it. I just think that the post was more about us venting our rage and frustration that this type of crime exists in todays society, and theres nothing we appear to be able to do to wipe it out.

AitchTwoOh · 14/02/2007 12:52

terrible for the little child and her family, absolutely unimaginably awful. but all this 'string him up by the bollocks' stuff is just embarrassing. must we meet violence with violence? can't we stop and think about the best way forward? the death sentence has never worked as a deterrent in America. you just can't be a civilised society and have a death penalty.

DNA evidence is not 100% reliable (there was was a very high profile case in Scotland recently) and chemical castration, even if it worked or was feasible, would not have prevented this incident, so nor would it work as a deterrent. (in fact, many paedophiles beg for castration or castrate themselves, it doesn't necessarily obliterate their desire for power over young people).

KittylettesShreddies · 14/02/2007 14:21

No, it doesnt, it may quell sexual urges in a general sense, but it doesnt automatically alter their mind set.

I hate the way these threads end up being about the offender, and not so much about the poor little girl and the shattered family that is left behind.

FWIW, I'm with Socci and Hunker.

oliveoil · 14/02/2007 14:24

read it and weep cod

I started to foam at the mouth about a third of the way up

KittylettesShreddies · 14/02/2007 14:26

must change my name back.....

quietmouse · 14/02/2007 14:27

why would you read it and weep? The only thing I weep over is the needless and brutal death of that beautiful little girl

mumto3girls · 14/02/2007 14:27

Not everyone was like that on here Olive Oil. And even those that were have the right to vent their emotions and frustration, even if it is deemed 'self righteous' by others.
