can't believe it is a major news story here in Aus!!

JoolsToo · 18/01/2007 12:29

By Ken Russell in the Telegraph

Why do Jane Goody and the rest of the" terrorists", as I call them, detest Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty?

Because she is different.

That is why the angry mob ganged up on her, while the others retained what they liked to think was a dignified silence but looked more like gutless acquiescence.

Fans of Celebrity Big Brother are watching in increasing discomfort as the unfamiliarity between Shilpa?s culture and the Goodys? looks increasingly less like a failure to communicate and more like an agenda on the part of the Goody Gang to scapegoat and belittle the Bollywood actress.

I was the second "terrorist" hostage to escape from the Big Brother House, but I have followed every moment since my departure. The racist overtones have become undeniable.

Jade, with enormous vigour and obsessive needling, has instinctively formed a bullying cadre of Jo O?Meara, Danielle Lloyd and her boyfriend Jack Tweed against Shilpa for no discernable reason.

With phrases like ?dog,? ?bitch,? ?who does she think she is,? ?you?re just a cook,? ?c*? and ?what are you, a hairy man?? accumulating from the Goody Girl-Gang-and-Toyboy, a nation squirmed under the impression that there were distinct racial motivations to the bullyers? body language, insults and apparent agenda to exclude and attack Shilpa.

Other than an inherent dislike for the spiritual Shilpa?s being different, pretty, full of integrity and fairly secure in her personhood, Jade had no other provocation other than the thrill of self-righteousness to crucify the poor girl.

Jermaine Jackson, also a person of colour, escaped bullying because he was a Jackson, and perhaps too because he didn?t overtly seek to antagonize Jade?s Viper Pit and thus make himself a target.

Jade?s mother Jackiey called Shilpa 'the Indian girl? and seemed to blame Shilpa for Jackiey?s own inability to pronounce her name, as though Shilpa had intentionally set out to irritate Jackiey by having a name that Jackie would have a difficult time pronouncing. (Compare that with Shilpa?s own gentle self-reproach for mispronouncing Dirk?s name ?Duck,? an error she then practiced diligently to overcome, and did.) For Jackiey, Shilpa would always be ?what?s-her-name.?

Former Miss Great Britain Danielle Lloyd, obviously wanting to be accepted by Jade as having ?street cred,? began accusing Shilpa of ?doin? ?er ?ead in?. One saw in Danielle a pitiful need to ?belong? to the ?tough girls? who weren?t afraid to bully someone whose skin, manners, gracefulness and openness set her apart from the Pillowtalk Gang-of-Three. Having been bullied herself in the past, she no doubt had learned to protect herself by clinging to the most effective abuser like a bodyguard.

Inflamed herself with drink and hostility, she went on to call Shilpa a ?dog? and to say ?we (meaning Jade and Danielle) are friends and you?re just the cook.?

Singer Jo O?Meara, driven by a restless impulse to match her girlfriends? obsession with Shilpa, called the unoffending Indian actress ?a control freak.? She too claimed 'the Indian girl? was ?doin? ?er ?ead in?. The girls repeat insulting phrases like a kind of babytalk to bond with each other.

All the bullying had a disturbing racist subtext. ?She undercooks chicken like that because that?s what the people over there do, and they?re all diseased.?

?I don?t want her touching my food.?

Any miscalculation Shilpa makes, the three girls leap upon. The stew down the toilet gave them another outlet for contempt and expressions of repulsion aimed at Shilpa.

Jermaine Jackson tried to cushion the pain of Shilpa?s scapegoating and exile by explaining patiently that the gangsters showed the mindsets of (he mouthed the phrase) ?white trash.?

He reminded Shilpa of her spiritual values, her dignity, her need not to win their approval but only to ?be herself.?

One could feel a nation shouting mentally at Shilpa not to debate Jade, as every argument was only a set-up for Jade to shame her.

And were we to believe that Jade?s ?dream?, in which Shilpa ?in her sari with her relatives and her fat female cousin in saris? kicked Jade, Jo and Danielle, gave some insight into a secret Shilpa? I don?t think so. It was only another means of attacking Shilpa.

What does all this say about our larger culture in Britain, whose public policies brag about ?multiculturalism? and so on, but whose inability to assimilate large numbers of society is glaringly obvious?

I?m no expounder of political correctness. I like to see people free to make mistakes in public and to cross-pollinate closed societies with the fresh air of rebellion and outspokenness.

But when a mean-spirited, close-minded group of people are seen to be gathering strength in numbers and fan clubs, overcompensating for their own feelings of weakness by singling out someone based on colour or costume, it must be noticed and stopped.

Aloha · 18/01/2007 12:30

Oh yes, I completely agree they say even though they are not basing their view of Shilpa on her race, or even being extremely racist, the racist comments they are making are absolutely horrible. Ironically, though, their racist comments are going to leave Shilpa much better off and destroy them completely. I almost pity them that they have so little idea of how they appear to others. They are clearly quite comfortable saying racist things and that is part of their bone-deep nastiness.

divamumdiva · 18/01/2007 12:31

Can i point one thing here. I always find there are people who anti-asians, indians and pakistanis, and chinese. They dont mind africans(i mean black race) But some people have strong feelings against asians. So in this case JAde and her Mum who refuse to call someone`s name and refered The Indian, defo racist. I know many people reminded JAde is mixed, probably in her narrow mind she is half black not asian or indian. I never liked Jade, she is always been this gob with big mouth, looks like joker anyway. She is got no brain, just big hole under her mouth, say things whitiot think.
Intelligence is important but common sense is more improtant. They just act like young kids. These days kids at school are open minded that these girls in BB.

Aloha · 18/01/2007 12:37

I find Jade, Danielle and Jo upsettingly horrible tbh. But they don't need to be punished by C4 or the law. I really, truly believe that they are destroying themselves more effectively via their racist comments than anyone else could. I suspect Jade will lose her agent over this. She must be appalling to work for anyway. I will be genuinely shocked if any of them get work after this.

expatinscotland · 18/01/2007 12:38

We live in hope, Aloha.

I for one will not mind being able to visit a newsagent without having my eyes and appetite assaulted by Jade's visage staring back at me from countless magazine covers.

crumbs · 18/01/2007 12:39

I can see that there is an argument for allowing Jade and her clique to hang themselves. But I think that the appalling behaviour in the BB house has gone far too far. It should be stopped. If a school's management was aware of a bullying issue, it would act to stop it. Similarly in the workplace. Why is it acceptable on national television?

nulnulcat · 18/01/2007 12:39

i disagree with the accepting black / africans until the recent terrorist events i would have said that the black community came under a lot of racist attacks, black youths in particular were always getting the blame for everything. people will always find someone to attack its nothing to do with the colour of there skin disabled people for example, and white people are just as horrible to other white people i was bullied at school for red hair and glasses

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 12:41

I think all this talk of class, who's a chav, who's posh, who's had a hard life etc. etc. etc. is completely irrelevant.

It doesn't matter if Shilpa's annoying or if Jade is mixed race or even if bullying is part and parcel of Big Brother generally.

Jade, Danielle and Jo are all using overtly racist language - "Go home", taking mick out of accents, casting aspersions on her hygiene, calling her home country "neverland" - the list is endless.

Shilpa has now made it clear she feels bullied because of her race.

In UK law (I believe) that's classed as racial harassment which is a criminal offence. Harassment is purely subjective in that context - the intentions of the perpetrator are not relevant.

It wouldn't be allowed in our schools, in our workplaces, in restaurants. So it shouldn't be allowed to take place on TV.

Yes, Big Brother is entertainment but TV producers have social responsibilities. There are kids watching this who put up with this type of stuff at school.

They need it to stop - otherwise they'll grow up thinking it's normal and feel ostracised from society for the rest of their lives.

Aloha · 18/01/2007 12:41

But bullying is what Big Brother is for! Pete Burns was the Jade Goody of the last celeb BB, only with a few more brain cells and better legs.

crumbs · 18/01/2007 12:42

well then maybe BB's time is over...

expatinscotland · 18/01/2007 12:43

I'd like to see Pete Burns and Jade Goody lip wrestle.

Now that'd be something to watch!

Blu · 18/01/2007 12:43

Aloha - yes, I agree. And about Jackiey.

The stew down the toilet was hilarious, really. The over-reaction as to how revolting it was. It was stew! And what about Jack's comment - when someone said 'you might have to scoop it out with something' Jack said 'yes, use your teeth!'

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 12:44

Sorry if my post sounded a bit OTT and sanctimonious.

This stuff has actually really upset me personally and I think all the academic distinctions between posh/chav and bullying/racism are just blurring the real issue.

Do we really want our kids to think that this kind of behaviour can go on without sanction?

Caligula · 18/01/2007 12:47

NEWSFLASH:
Jeremy Vine is having a phone-in on this after 1PM!!

For them as are interested...

Cashncarry · 18/01/2007 12:47

Oh FGS - did I kill ANOTHER thread

Aloha · 18/01/2007 12:47

I would love Shilpa to cook for me. That's what I don't understand. They may hate and resent her, but don't any of them like Indian food? I'd just let her get on with it, order the lot and sit down to an Indian buffet every day. Yum.

My favourite is Dirk, I think. There's something about his gentle bewilderment that amuses me.

Aloha · 18/01/2007 12:51

cashandcarry - the thing is, I don't think it will go without sanction. They are HATED for their comments. How many thousands of complaints have their been? Don't you think they will be irrevocably damaged by how they have behaved? I think that is a wonderful lesson for people to see - that saying nasty, racist things, that being a bully and a coward does not make you admired and loved, it makes you look ugly, cheap, nasty and stupid. You will lose respect, friends and even the remnants of your career.

Expat, I too live in hope that the Jade Goody phenomenon is now over. I thought that clearly fake Eskimos conversation showed she was getting pretty desperate about her brand.

Caligula · 18/01/2007 12:51

Nulnulcat I stuck up for Jodie Marsh last year!

I agree there was a lot less sympathy for her because she is a chav. She was bullied by that awful coven of mysogynists (is coven the correct collective noun there - probably not) because she is a sexually aggressive woman with not much sense but also because she obviously had very little real self-confidence. You got the feeling her whole sense of self would have crumbled and broken if she'd stayed one more week there. Whereas Shilpa is composed and and it's the other women's sense of self which looks uneasy.

Agree about the thousands of complaints - for every complaint you get, there are another thousand people out there who can't be bothered to complain, but agree with the substance of the complaint.

They are really destroying themselves (I hope)

Does anyone else htink that Danielle looks like Sarah Louise from Corrie?

Aloha · 18/01/2007 12:54

I can't remember who said that they were suprised that nobody was asking about other people's backgrounds and I notice that too. Yesterday Jermaine started talking about his father and how he used to beat all the children except Michael, which I thought was fascinating, but Shilpa interrupted him to talk about the argument. At another point Shilpa was talking about living with her parents despite being a film star and having to be home by 2am and anyone who was taking her had to talk to her father first etc, and someone interrupted her. Quite odd really.

Earlybird · 18/01/2007 12:55

Last night's explosion began with the oxo cube, and escalated with Jade repeatedly calling Shilpa a liar (among many other things). Amazing that Jade can get so outraged over a 'lie' when it has recently come to light that Jade's new figure is not the result of regular exercise and healthy eating (as she claims in her new book/video) - but has come from a secret visit to a plastic surgeon for liposuction....a 'lie' on an entirely different level.

Blu · 18/01/2007 12:55

Cashandcarry - I think you are right...but i agree with Aloha - the sanctions will be long and deep.
However, the fact that so many people seem to either not recognise or want to deny that there is any racist content in what is going on makes me concerned that it won't be taken seriously in all quarters, and that there might well be a sympathy backlash vote for the bullies once the chips are down.
