Labour and anti-semitism

Apologies for DF links but ignoring the lowbrow style 'journalism' for a minute, I am perturbed about these reports.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3531852/Labour-councillor-20-suspended-claims-called-Hitler-greatest-man-history-latest-anti-Semitic-scandal-hit-Corbyn-s-party.html#comments

I like Corbyn a little bit but judge his cavalier attitude to anti-semitism harshly.

Has anti-semitism become cool among labour supporters or something? What is being done about the anti-semitism coming from some labour politicians and how to deal with the Islamist flavour of anti-semitism as displayed by Labour councillor Aysegul Gurbuz (and others) for examples who posted statements such as this on twitter :

"Ed Miliband is Jewish. He will never become prime minister of Britain."
"Adolf Hitler was praised as the ‘greatest man in history".

Shock Sad

Lelal, I'm not sure why you are feigning dimness, but Kesstrel was the first poster to espouse the notion that (at least one subgroup of) Jews are more intelligent than any other ethnic group. Please tell me why are choosing to ignore this but a cure me of being racist/supremacist. The same goes for Mistri. Any more of that shit and I'll take it up with MNHQ.

Oh, and God said Israel were his chosen people. If this is supremacist take it up with Him.

ThirtyNineWeeks · 12/04/2016 20:27

Mistri, did you read my excerpt, posted at 14.26, from the study that informed Kesstrel's wiki link? No? Well, it suggests that Jewish intelligence evolved in tandem with those same genetic diseases which you suggest result in inferior intellect.

Who'da thunk it?

kesstrel · 13/04/2016 06:40

I believe it is fair, in order to avoid misconceptions, to point out to everyone reading this thread that Thirtynineweeks is apparently an evangelical Christian, to judge from her posting history.

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2016 07:22

"Thirtynineweeks is apparently an evangelical Christian, to judge from her posting history"

Who'da thunk it? Grin

florianblossom · 13/04/2016 11:38

I'm still really insulted at being called a racist in this thread
My best friend is Jewish and so is her husband who is also black
My best male friend is married to an Israeli
none of them are religious or Zionist or give that much thought to it TBH we rarely discuss politics, but we all have different opinions and respect each others differences without feeling the need to convert anyone else to our way of thinking or bully anyone who disagrees
Couldn't be friends with people who feel the need to shove their opinions down others throats and dominate the discussion TBH

florianblossom · 13/04/2016 11:46

The only time we did discuss politics was when my friend and her DH fell out a bit after the last election because she voted Tory and he voted Labour!
He works for the Govt so he was really depressed when the Tories got in and was kind of pissed off with his wife!

florianblossom · 13/04/2016 11:50

Hmm I am wondering about the need to dismiss someone's opinion because they are Christian
Would it be ok to say the same if they were Jewish or Muslim?
Either dismiss all people who are religious as being mutters who's opinions don't matter or else don't use it as a slur in any case IMO

ThirtyNineWeeks · 13/04/2016 13:44

I think it's a way of no-platforming Christians, florian; just dismiss them as crackpots and they'll go away. Job done.

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2016 13:55

This is all getting a bit Kafka-esque!

On a thread about anti semitism, posting in a way that any reasonable person would assume meant you were Jewish when you're not is pretty bloody outrageous.

Grin at the idea of Christians being "no platformed" on Mumsnet!

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2016 14:02

And for the record, on a thread about racism and politics, I would dismiss the views of anyone, regardless of religion, who claimed that any group was entitled to special treatment or was in any way "superior" because God said so. I dismissed it when I thought Thirtynineweeks was Jewish, and I dismissed it now I know her to be a Chrisitan. Should she pop up under another name change as a Muslim I will dismiss it again.

florianblossom · 13/04/2016 14:02

I think the amount of assumptions on this thread is the problem Bertrand
Its assumed that I'm a lefty socialist racist immediately just because I'm not following the proscribed Daily Fail opinions spouted on here
There is a lot of assumption that is totally in accurate IMO

florianblossom · 13/04/2016 14:03

Why should a Jewish person have only one view?
Jewish people can think what they like and religious people and Zionists don't speak for all Jews

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2016 14:22

"Why should a Jewish person have only one view?
Jewish people can think what they like and religious people and Zionists don't speak for all Jews"
Of course not. Who said otherwise?

ThirtyNineWeeks · 13/04/2016 14:41

When did I post in way that made me sound as though I am Jewish? Are only Jews permitted to believe in the Old Tsstament and argue that Labour has a problem with Anti-Semitism?

Would I, if arguing against the donning of Indian headdress at fancy dress parties, be accused of posting in a manner that led to the assumption I was a Sioux Indian? How absurd.

ThirtyNineWeeks · 13/04/2016 14:47

And what is 'Ignore her...don't engage with Thirtynine...' if it isn't a form of no-platforming? You have form for it, Bertrand; you shift the emphasis of any religious thread you can manage with: 'But what about Christian privilege!!'

Yawn.

ThirtyNineWeeks · 13/04/2016 14:50

Bertrand, where did I say the Jews are superior? Watch yourself.

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2016 16:15

"Jews are a privileged race; God's chosen people. Their intelligence is God-given; God has equipped them to rise up from continued persecution and to succeed in ways no other minority can."

ThirtyNineWeeks · 13/04/2016 16:20

I repeat: Where did I say Jews are superior?

BertrandRussell · 13/04/2016 16:47

"Bertrand, where did I say the Jews are superior? Watch yourself."

Is that a threat? Grin

kesstrel · 13/04/2016 16:56

No one's opinion is being dismissed because they are Christian. I could just as well have phrased my post "Thirtynineweeks is not Jewish, which is the only point I wanted to get across. But give me a break, it was very early in the morning!

ThirtyNineWeeks · 13/04/2016 17:14

Why did you feel the need to point that out, Kesstrel, just out of interest?

florianblossom · 13/04/2016 19:09

Think I may have invented a new word inadvertently through a combination of shit Internet and spell check
Mutters!

florianblossom · 13/04/2016 19:11

Sorry to digress but does anyone's Internet crash on mums net way more than on anyone else's site?
I don't have this problem on other sites with over zealous spellcheck and crashing just when I've posted the end of an epic rant and have to start over!

Oswin · 13/04/2016 19:19

Thirtynineweeks I've just realised who you are!!
You know if you didn't post things like people hate Jesus and god and other inflammatory things then people wouldn't think you need avoiding.

kesstrel · 13/04/2016 20:19

To answer your question, Thirtynineweeks: Because most liberal-minded people would look askance at a claim that, if it were made by a Jewish person, could be read as:

"I belong to a privileged race; God's chosen people. Our intelligence is God-given (including my own); God has equipped us to rise up from continued persecution and to succeed in ways no other minority can."

It sounds incredibly hubristic and arrogant. And it's certainly not something that any of the Jewish people I have known would say. That's why I felt it was important to point out that the person writing it was not Jewish.
