OK - Britain is a small country

So why are we taking in more immigrants? We now have an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians coming here. Before anyone calls me racist or the like, I am 100% not. It just annoys me because we are a tiny country. Why are countries like Australia, NZ, USA, and Canada more selective and Britain is not.

Haven't read it all but your premise about 'small country' makes no sense. Take Qatar as an example, a country that is small and 90% desert. Population is roughly 800,000. Native population roughly 80,000. Why? Because Qatari's are wealthy and don't want to do the jobs that need doing like nursing, road building, shop work or lack specialist skills like medical research etc.

The big difference though is that no one gets citizenship no matter how long you are there for or who you marry - residency yes, and you have good rights with that, but citizenship no. Also as an immigrant you can only buy property under strict conditions and in very select areas.

Would be interested to know if people in the UK feel more comfortable with that approach which leans to a more transient immigrant population?

zippitippitoes · 04/01/2007 07:39

isn't the lack of jobs for nurses in the nhs due to mismanagement and debt both macro and micro rather than immigration?

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 07:56

Sorry if I have X-posts but what is most annoying to me is not the people who come here to work and contribute - they could teach all our work-shy lot a thing or two...But the people who come here to exploit and take!!

By this I mean exploit our law and justice system and take advantage of our benfits system and NHS! Ect ect ....I could go on, but wont!

I think the Indie was posting the facts and then quoting Farage to make him appear (more) ludicrous.

Monkeytrousers · 04/01/2007 10:34

Re the OP you are basing your opinion informed by what exactly?

Monkeytrousers · 04/01/2007 10:36

"By this I mean exploit our law and justice system and take advantage of our benfits system and NHS! Ect ect ....I could go on, but wont!"

Again - based on what except an overactive imagination??

How many natives exploit our law system with fraudulent accident and insurance claims?

Monkeytrousers · 04/01/2007 10:37

Or the NHS with sick claims?

fortyplus · 04/01/2007 11:08

Heard on the news that it's now predicted that there'll be a massive shortage of nurses within 4 years!

So those of you with Nursing qualifications will be fine in a couple of years if that's any consolation.

speedymama · 04/01/2007 11:15

Monkeytrousers - you are trying to have a rational debate with irrational fairies - you're onto a loser I'm afraid!

uwila · 04/01/2007 11:43

I thought they were limiting the number of Romanians/Bulgarians who could come to the UK.

My only complaint is that all these people are causing more demand on the housing market and driving the prices even higher... But, it's a free market. If we don't want to allow other EU state citizens to come here, then I guess we would have to pull out of the EU, and I don't really think that would be a good idea.

However, I do wonder why they put a cap on the immigrants from Bulgaria/Romania and not a cap across the board (on all EU states).

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 11:59

Monkeytrousers as you can see from my other comment, I am well aware we have our own native collection of wasters - but and I speak from experience of dealing with a few during my long and varied career that there are those from other countries who see Britan as the soft touch and come here purley to claim benefit or get free medical attention.

Just wanted to raise a point that has been bugging me about this and many other discussions on here.

People post their views/opinions on what they have read/seen on tv (whether it's a daily mail article or not ) then someone opposes them by what they have read somewhere.

Who is to say who is right. Just because the BBC or the independent, whom were quoted in opposition to something I posted earlier have aired their views on something, it doesn't mean they are right either.

I think that everyone reads/watches different slants on stuff but is anyone absolutely 100% right on issues such as this. Just a thought really and also a response to Monkeytrousers asking about an opinion based on which information.

BaileysMilkshake · 04/01/2007 12:12

Agree with UCM and have written as such on other threads. Opinions are just that and there is no judge for someone's opinion.

MN is great for people to share views, but there will always be someone who takes offence or belittles other because they think they are mis-informed.

Tortington · 04/01/2007 12:17

its red headed people that take all the jobs, put a strain on the infrastructure etcetc.

dya know how many lazy arse red heads i know ( or have read about in the sun...think manchester united...eh scholesy you fat fuck) who simply DRAINNNNNNN this country

take the women. produce more red heads.

buy up all the houses

oh and then they complain when its sunny..in england.

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 12:28

LOL custy

Sally, wouldn't worry too much. When I was s tudent nurse (oooh eons ago) one of the reasons we all gave up (apart from being experimented on with a crap course ) is that we were all told that there would be no jobs, as that is what we were told. In fact, that was about 3 years before the HUGE job crises in the NHS. Students left, nurses left, weren't replaced (well why would you train for a job with no prospects.....) and suddenly there was a shortfall. A huge one.

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 12:29

UCm 'Just wanted to raise a point that has been bugging me about this and many other discussions on here.

People post their views/opinions on what they have read/seen on tv (whether it's a daily mail article or not ) then someone opposes them by what they have read somewhere. ' I kinda know what you mean, but equally isn't that the stuff of debate? Isn't that how we share info (just a thought)

UCM · 04/01/2007 12:41

Yes, of course it is Peachy. Just sometimes people get quite animated and belittle someones view based on where they have got their info from, when they themselves have got it from another source albeit different (smile)

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 13:05

Belittling is NEVER ok, but it is true that different sources have separate agendas- especially the media. Daily mail is anti immigration, so that articles they publish are going to be more skewed and if you read thatalone you won't get the full picture. that's equally true of other sources, of course. I mean, you wouldn't want to debate the passing of Princess Di with only source material from the Express!

zippitippitoes · 04/01/2007 13:13

bulgaria and romania can be capped because they are just joining much more politicially problematic to start capping with eg poland

puffling · 04/01/2007 13:22

Has anyone yet read any DM/DE article which directly links house prices, asylum seekers, immigrants and terrorism? They normally manage to link at least 2 of these.

Tortington · 04/01/2007 13:32

how do immagrents afford the houses - therefore puting pressure on the market?

or

is it that there are too many polish bringish house prices down?

i dont get it

uwila · 04/01/2007 13:36

Seriously, I think the problem is better solved by building more housing. And since we are a small country (in terms of land area) we should probably build up rather than spread out.

I'm all for the free movement in the EU. I think it's a good thing. But, I still don't understand why Bulgaria/Romania are suddenly deemed less equal than Poland (or any other EU country)

Tortington · 04/01/2007 13:44

cant build more housing, theres always a lesser spotted newt doncha know. the local campaign on the issue of the right to leave the lesser spoted newt alone - it sounds better than dont build houses for council scum.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 14:08

yeah. lets all move to high rise council flats to make more room for immigrants. what a stupid comment.
