OK - Britain is a small country

So why are we taking in more immigrants? We now have an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians coming here. Before anyone calls me racist or the like, I am 100% not. It just annoys me because we are a tiny country. Why are countries like Australia, NZ, USA, and Canada more selective and Britain is not.

Every time I turn on the tv there is some property programme with a breathless presenter and some crap diagrams showing me that if I invest in a house in Romania or Bulgaria my money will grow grow GROW as prices there are set to rise by a zillion percent over the next ten years.

Perhaps Romanian MN is busy discussing this Property Imperialism which is no doubt pricing Romanians out of their own homes. Wonder how they will find an income high enough to buy a house for their family in Romania? Here, perhaps?

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 17:46

'if you or anyone else on here would rather live in high rise appartments/flats rather than a luxury 4 bed detatched house with a nice garden then fine '

despite working as hard as anyone (managing 3 kids, 2 with sn, a Dh who has a difficult job AND a health problem, a degree and working 1 day a week ahrd enough....) I don't happen to have a 4 bed detached, and I seriously doubt I ever will. Am I bvvered? nope, not really. (I do have a nice, rented 3 bed cottage btw).

I would seriously doubt anyone has ever been asked to move out of their 4 bed detahced to make way for an immigrant family and then handed the keys to a council flat. And not every person in the UK has a family and is particularly bothered by a garden- lots of childless couples these days, for example, and single households. Do single people really need a detached 4 bed? think not, yet (iirc) they're a fast growing part of the population, so should be catered for.

So, has anyone else noticed that josephandailsasmum has never posted on any other thread? Name changer or troll? Or just an ill behaved newbie?

speedymama · 04/01/2007 17:52

A question for the xenophobes, do you still believe that the world is flat and that you will fall of the edge once you reach the horizon?

I have to pinch myself sometimes to remind myself which century we live in when I read some of the absurd comments regarding the influx of immigrants into this country.

Brits immigrate and migrate too for economic reasons. It's what makes the world go round, don't you know.

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 17:52

Do you think tshe name changed the kids if that's right?

uwila · 04/01/2007 17:55

No, I don't think she's that clever.

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 17:56

Sally you make a good point.

The current aticpated influx of Romanians / Bulgarians is being targeted only to those areas where immigrant labour is needed- agricultural and food packaging iirc- and anyone else is handled on a case by case basis, which is no different to immigrants from anywhere in the world.

So whilst there may be issues with Polish builders, nurses for some or whatever, it does seem those views have actually been listened to by the Government.

SnafuOutOfHiding · 04/01/2007 18:32

Well, I live in a 5-bedroom luxury detached home with a luxury garden in a luxurious part of the South East.

I didn't work hard for it, though.

Daddog · 04/01/2007 18:44

The whole idea of National identity on which this debate is based is all a bit weird anyway. At some point we've all come from somewhere else, we're all immigrants anyway. And the West's wealth is based on things going round, primarily money but also people. And aren't as many Brits (whatever they look like) going elsewhere any foreigners (whomever they be) are coming here?

RE. Nurses and plumbers from overseas. I read that Poland is so short of plumbers they are bringing works over from Bulgaria...

DizzyBint · 04/01/2007 18:50

this frustrates me daddog. so many people can't see how fluid the movement of people is. they seem to want to preserve this snap shot of time that is now. people move around, they always have, they always will. world history is all about tribes, wars, inavasions, refugees. yet people still persist on this notion that it's all gone mad.

UCM · 04/01/2007 19:22

I don't think that movement is bad at all, I think that 500,000 people descending on the UK in a months time is too much though. The infrastructure isn't able to take it.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 19:27

You are not a very welcoming bunch are you?Is it because you resent any newcomers (reminds me of mum & toddler groups).

Uwila replying "shes not that clever" about me and slagging me off because she doesnt like what I have to say.

I am not a troll/namechanger but a newcomer that has browsed this site for months but have never posted for two reasons, 1. Like I have mentioned, you all seem so clicky and seem to resent newcomers (maybe I am wrong, but that is the impression I get) and 2. I get the impression some of you think you are far too intelligent to mingle with newcomers like myself that appear "not so clever". I replied to the op because of SallyStrawberrys comment about the Nursing crisis and not for any other reason

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 19:33

We try to be welcoming, but you did call someone's post stupid. Generally when I 'meet' new people I try to be friendly, whilst at the same time making my point (I think respect is the term used).

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 19:34

Oh I'm an immigrant btw really, we've never contributed anything to Wales yet the kids live here and we all benefit.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 19:49

Fair enough.

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 19:57

If you can remember that, you will be most welcome I am sure. MN is wonderful; we're all a bit shellshocked tonight but the things over the last year that it has achieved are amazing.

uwila · 04/01/2007 20:21

If you don't want me to say you aren't very clever, don't start out by calling me stupid. You may think I'm overly sensitive, but that sort of talk pisses me off.

UCM · 04/01/2007 20:45

Oooo Joseph&Ailsasmummy, people are not only disagreeable to newcomers, I have been here years and still get slated every now & then. It's part of the fun.

Bet if you post on a less contraversial thread, you will meet loads of people who are funny, helpful and nice.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 20:55

I apologise Uwila. I am sure you are not stupid. You appear very intelligent. Sorry if I offended you.

Baptism by fire, JosephandAilsasMummy!! Please don't be put off. BTW - what's a troll? On MN I mean (obviously I know what it is in storybooks!) I'm a not so new newbie and I've seen the term used a few times. Thanks.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 21:44

Hi, i think a troll is some kind of imposter. someone that likes to stir up trouble.

fortyplus · 04/01/2007 23:48

JosephAndAilsasMummy - have fun on MN! It does seem like that sometimes but I've been 'using' for a few months now and it's fun. Saves me raiding the fridge at night!

NOELallie · 05/01/2007 08:11

I have worked very hard (and so has DH in how own way bless him) for years even when my 3 kids were tiny. Where do I got to collect my luxury ( sorry!) 4-bedroom house. I think it may have been overlooked.
