OK - Britain is a small country

So why are we taking in more immigrants? We now have an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians coming here. Before anyone calls me racist or the like, I am 100% not. It just annoys me because we are a tiny country. Why are countries like Australia, NZ, USA, and Canada more selective and Britain is not.

why does high buildings have to mean chigh rise council flats? I would LOVE to be able toa fford a (high rise) apartment in cardiff bay- very far from council flats I can assure you!

PeachyClair · 04/01/2007 14:11

(oh and its OK to disagree, not nice to call peoples comments stupid however).

Just a thought.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 14:13

well i would rather stay in my 4 bedroomed detatched house with a big garden for my kids to play which my DH and I have worked damned hard for. if you want to move to small apartments/flats with no garden to make way for immigrants go ahead.

NOELallie · 04/01/2007 14:16

I don't think it's a stupid comment at all. In much of Europe a large proportion of the population live in apartments. Over here we all want a garden - well so do I but I'm not sure that if more apartments and less houses meant more shared open space and less development creep across the countryside I wouldn't be up for that.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 14:22

if you or anyone else on here would rather live in high rise appartments/flats rather than a luxury 4 bed detatched house with a nice garden then fine (somehow i think most people would prefer the detatched house). but why the hell should anyone move from a nice house to a small appartment to make room for immigrants. I dont beleive for one minute anyone would rather live in a high rise appt/flats over a luxury 4 bed house with garden.

uwila · 04/01/2007 14:25

Excuse me? At least I don't post my children's real names on the internet.

I said nothing about "council" flats. I just said we should build up. True, you lose the garden, but I could live with that if there was a nice park in the area where my kids and their nanny could get out and be a part of the community. Do I sound like a council tennant.

My DH and I also work damn hard (except when I'm typing on here). So, pack up your violin, mum to Joseph and Ailsa.

Judy1234 · 04/01/2007 14:28

You should all be looking the other way. I like that area Prince Charles is investing in in Romania. One of the oldest farming areas, almost Saxon I think. I hope it can be preserved. Sounds a good place for a holiday - like going back in time.

uwila · 04/01/2007 14:30

I agreee, Xenia. But I want to work in the oil business. And I don't want to raise my 1 and 3 year old in Romania.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 14:31

So what if i post my kids names on here. so everyone now personally knows who my kids are do they? i dont think so.

uwila · 04/01/2007 14:38

Oh, please. I decline to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

Go bask in your "luxury four bedroom house". I bet it's in Little England.

uwila · 04/01/2007 14:44

"I will have to sign on the dole or work for minimum wage in a nursing home. Its not fair."

Ah, so that's your problem. You think the immigrants are taking what is rightfully your. Now tell me, which is it: 4 bedromm luxury house, or living on the dole?

Nobody owes you anything. You deserve what you earn. Everybody does. And just as you can go work in another EU country, they can come work here, and it doesn't make you hard done by.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 15:00

Its the 4 bed luxury house which my DH has worked hard for.
Why should I have to work in a nursing home for mimimum wage when i have trained 4 years to become a nurse. why should i have to move to another country because there are no nursing posts in this country? Half of my local hospitals nursing staff are from other countries such as the philipines. i have nothing against anyone working here and know the philipinos are excellent workers and good nurses, but it is frustrating that I have trained for 4 years to become a nurse and cant get a job.
I know nothing about the polish, bulgarians or romanians, what i do know is, i wont be moving to a high storey flat to accomodate them.

uwila · 04/01/2007 15:11

Ah, so just your DH has worked for it? Not you after all. Oh, if Xenia comes bak, she's going to tell you about marital prostitution. I can't wait....

If you don't want/need to move, that's your choice. But, if we built a bunch of high rises, perhaps other people would move to them reducing the demand on the four bed detached market, and then housing as a whole could become more affordable for us all. I'm talking about increasing supply. I am not talking about encouraging people to go on the dole (way too much of that is this country).

Tortington · 04/01/2007 15:12

can i interject.

just becuase one works hard it doesnt't necessarily mean they can afford a house. ergo, one can work just as hard and be a council tenant.

what wrong with being a council tenant?

on the issue of urban planning. unfortunatley flats - private expensive nay luxurty flats seem to be the way forward.

even the most urban deprived areas have such flats now.

i believe the ability for immagrents to afford these flats would be NIL

Judy1234 · 04/01/2007 15:19

Ah yes which is why councils require a percentage of affordable housing to be built in return for permission to build the luxury blocks which make the builders money.

I'm not sure why the English love houses and gardens and they don't seem to matter so much to the French although the last Frenchman I had lunch with was waxing lyrical about his second home - a mill in Brittany so perhaps they aren't all just into flats in Paris etc. I like the ability for the children to make a noise without worrying about neighbours. I like the thought of being able to lie in the garden in the sun, even though there isn't much chance of that.

JosephAndAilsasMummy · 04/01/2007 15:22

out of interest uwila. what type of house do you live in?? dont tell me, a luxury 4 or 5 bedroomed house with a luxury garden I bet.

uwila · 04/01/2007 15:33

Custy, I'm simply making the point that we need to increase the supply to bring the prices down. Either that or reduce deman, which is wht people who don't want the imigrants are trying to do. But, I prefer the increased supply approach.

AilsaandJo, I can't see it has any bearing on your argument. But, since you asked, I live in a 4 bedroom detached house with a small garden. But, I wouldn't put in into the luxury category. Just a biog standard house with not many frills. Oh, but I can't afford to buy a house big enough to live in so I rent this place. There will either be a housing crash in this country in the next couple of years that will enable me to get onto the property ladder, or I will start proposing to DH that we live elsewhere. Oh, yes, and you might be interested to know that I myself am a pesky foreigner.

Xenia, have you been to Romania? Got any holiday spot recommendations?

uwila · 04/01/2007 15:39

Oh, and yes yes yes, Custy. People in this country work bloody hard and still cant afford to buy property. That's my whole point. It is absurd and it can't last forever. Perhaps Xenia is right and we should all pack up for abetter life in Romania.

Tortington · 04/01/2007 15:52

think i might. whats in romania?

DizzyBint · 04/01/2007 16:02

what's with all this 'luxury' business? isn't that just estate agent, show home type speak? luxury!

uwila · 04/01/2007 16:02

Count Dracula (not to be confused with Countess Dracula)

zippitippitoes · 04/01/2007 16:09

nurses already here from other countries who have jobs deserve to have them ..they are not going to have their jobs taken away just because the nhs is cocked and indigenous nurses have been trained without jobs to go to and the system is in a mess

the reason they don't have posts to fill is not because the y aren't needed by the community it's because there has been a cock up in money

they got their jobs first and were willing to take them when they were needed to make up a short fall they are entitled to them as much as anyone else

geekgrrl · 04/01/2007 16:14

pmsl at J&Asmummy's enthusiastic overuse of 'luxury'
