OK - Britain is a small country

So why are we taking in more immigrants? We now have an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians coming here. Before anyone calls me racist or the like, I am 100% not. It just annoys me because we are a tiny country. Why are countries like Australia, NZ, USA, and Canada more selective and Britain is not.

A story from the Daily Mail. So very balanced and non-alarmist, then.

The reason is because, no matter what you feel, it is racist/bigotted/prejudicial to NOT allow ANYONE to come here. Even discussing it is racist.

Sits back with a cup of tea.............

SnafuOutOfHiding · 30/12/2006 16:24

I knew before I even clicked that it would be the DM.

tissy · 30/12/2006 16:27

I heard a lovely piece on R4 this lunchtime- best of the Now Show. One of the two blokes had a bit of a rant about how BT couldn't fix his broadband in less than 2 weeks, but his Polish carpenters who are putting in shelves in his study VOLUNTEERED to work BH Monday in order to finish the job quickly. He made the point that they didn't come over here to TAKE our jobs, but to DO them.

LittleSarah · 30/12/2006 16:27

What about all the many many Brits who emigrate elsewhere...?? Perhaps we should stop allowing them to leave, as my mum used to say, 'everything has a place and a place for everything'.

... hang on, that was about tidying up, not immigration! Darn!

NotQuiteCockney · 30/12/2006 16:28

Um, from what I know, Australia has the highest rate of immigrants, per capita. With Canada close behind. And both these countries allow economic immigrants from any country, using a points system, which the UK does not allow.

MKG · 30/12/2006 16:30

Because even if you put limits on who can enter the country, people find a way in anyway.

Trust me in the US we have 11 million undocumented workers.

LittleSarah · 30/12/2006 16:30

'Around one in 10 Brits now live overseas, research from the Institute for Public Policy Research suggests.

IPPR found that more than 198,000 British nationals moved overseas last year, bringing the total number living abroad to more than 5.5m.'

UCM · 30/12/2006 16:30

But aren't those countries huge, with room for development in them. UK is tiny and cannot properly house everyone here as it is.

SnafuOutOfHiding · 30/12/2006 16:33

Yes, I've never quite been able to square the DM's frothing-at-the-mouth attitude to immigration with the constant stream of articles it produces on how Brits can buy a home, a swimming pool and a super new life abroad.

Romanian and Bulgaria are lovely, I've heard, and the cost of living is so low!

friskyfox · 30/12/2006 16:33

Britain is just too small. Australia is huge as is the USA, Canada.

Oh well one good thing has come from the influx of immigrants. All those Polish workers taking jobs that lazy arsed Brits wouldn't touch with a barge pole for what they see as little ££££'s. The government are about to crack down on long term Benefit collectors who are quite able to work but won't - hurrah!

Tinker · 30/12/2006 16:34

But most Poles (and I assume it will be the same for other East Europeans) do not want to stay here. They want to come for a few years, earn decent money and go home. Poland is beautiful. And these are the educated get-up-and-go types, an asset to any country.

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 30/12/2006 16:37

Oh God ... had this discussion with my mother over boxing day lunch. As my cousin commented, these conversations are always down to the fact that 50% of the room read the Daily Mail... and the other 50% read a newspaper

JoolsToo · 30/12/2006 16:38

That's not the impression I got from a recent documentary about young Poles in Britain. They said they wanted to stay. Poland is miserable and dull.

Some have been treated quite badly by the agencies over here taking advantage of their lack of language and duping them into working long hours for little pay, some also not living in very pleasant conditions, these are the ones that want to return.

Most though think they've dropped into Nirvana!

tiredemma · 30/12/2006 16:38

"Britain is just too small. Australia is huge as is the USA, Canada."

get real friskyfox.

MKG · 30/12/2006 16:41

People may originally immigrate to make money and go home, but life is what happens when you make other plans. My husband came to this country without papers thinking that he would make money and go back home. 10 years later he's married, with kids, a house, credit card bills to pay, and real connections to the country.
