OK - Britain is a small country

So why are we taking in more immigrants? We now have an influx of Romanians and Bulgarians coming here. Before anyone calls me racist or the like, I am 100% not. It just annoys me because we are a tiny country. Why are countries like Australia, NZ, USA, and Canada more selective and Britain is not.

BTW josephandailsasmummy - MN can be a very rough and tumble place but generally it's OK. Posters don't always pull their punches and as you've already been advised calling someone 'stupid' ain't a good start.

Have fun!

uwila · 05/01/2007 08:24

Good morning JandAmummy, thanks for apologising. It's okay.

flutterbee · 05/01/2007 08:48

Can someone please explain to me how a 4 bed detached house is described as luxury.

Are the toilets gold and the taps encursted with diamonds?

All sounds very Hyacynth Bucket to me.

UCM · 05/01/2007 08:59

We...elll, if you live on the 9th floor of a 20 storey block with urine in the hallways....it would be.

UCM · 05/01/2007 08:59
Grin
flutterbee · 05/01/2007 09:13

I suspect your right UCM but then surely thats there fault for not working hard enough to get the luxury 4 bed attached house with garden

and there probably immigrants

SecondhandRose · 05/01/2007 09:46

My problem with immigration is the state of our increasingly busy roads, the M25 is unable to cope with the traffic. The lack of decent health care. Problems finding dentists.

Schools that are already bulging and with ever growing behavioural problems. These are problems we have now and are not going to get any better.

In my opinion if people are wanting to come and live and work here they should know the language they need to speak, we should not be spending millions on interpreters to make them feel comfortable. As one Polish woman recently said on a TV interview, she feels no need to learn English as she gets an interpreter for free when she needs one.

On the other hand, a huge job market has been filled. This market should have been filled by Britain's long term unemployed that sit on their arses at the bingo all day. These people are our problem.

There you go, ducks for cover ready for trouble.

uwila · 05/01/2007 11:35

Maybe we should reduce the cost of public transport and get everyone (immigrants or not) off the roads and onto the trains. Seriously, we need to adress the congestion, but we also need to adress the environment and the decreasing supply of oil and gas.

Tortington · 05/01/2007 11:50

the people who make millions off that oil and gas dont really want us to do that.

as they finance wars, hape global economies and fund presedential campaigns controlling the biggest superpower ( the execution of saddam hussein ...oil interest?)

i am quite certain they remain to be quite pleased that urban housewives drive their children to school in 4x4 off roaders ( that have never seen off road) to keep them in business. At least for the next 50 years.

at which time there will either be a huge financial crash, certainly a huge political void.

for your children and your childrens children i would be concerned.

Tortington · 05/01/2007 11:55

the biggest migratory concernseemsto be eastern european.

usually cheap building labour - certainly ihaven't heard disgruntled teachers bemoaning how they are devalued because of the huge numbers of skilled teachers now entitled to come to uk

so we ave eastern european builders.not their families.

so the road argument yes. the eastern europeans are clogging up the M25 getting to work.

however they privately rent their housing, dont have any kids over here - so dont clog up the education system.

oh yes and they pay tax

Tortington · 05/01/2007 11:56

tut - silly me.

the NHS.

the NHS was so fucked before eastern europeans - so thats not even an argument.

KathyMCMLXXII · 05/01/2007 11:59

Where I live the dentists are Polish.

Tortington · 05/01/2007 12:06

really? all the dentists are polish dentists?

thats great - although obviously not for dentists

uwila · 05/01/2007 12:08

We are not running short of ways to consume oil. I don't think the big oil companies rely on SUVs.

But, I really don't want to turn this into a debate on the good and bad sides of the oil business.

I just think we in the west are too comfortable with the car. It is aour way of life, and I don't think it's going to last forever. SUV or smartcar, I think the years are numbered. (particularly when China and India are in a position for all their populations to aford cars of their own).

DizzyBint · 05/01/2007 12:08

it is amazing what people will try to link to immigration.

KathyMCMLXXII · 05/01/2007 12:12

No, not all, Custardo, but the new ones, so if you want to register as a new patient you will probably get one.
I was just a bit bemused by the poster who seemed to be blaming immigration for the shortage of dentists (haven't read all of thread though).

uwila · 05/01/2007 12:15

I hear Polish dentists are fab. Too bad I haven't got one.

Upwind · 05/01/2007 12:15

The only problem I can see with immigration is the pressure on resources - transport, housing, dentists...

It is not amazing that these things are linked to immigration.

DizzyBint · 05/01/2007 12:21

i live in leeds. there is a lack of affordable housing, this is not down to immigrants. the city centre is gridlocked every day during rush hour, as is the M62, this is not down to immigrants. our local hospitals are suffering a midwife shortage, this is not down to immigrants.

Upwind · 05/01/2007 12:26

You're right it is almost certainly not the main reason behind those problems - a lot of that is down to poor planning decisions imho.

But in general more people = more pressure on resources and services. More people competing for affordable housing = less affordable housing available. More people commuting to work = worse gridlock.

I've not actually red this very long thread btw so could be repeating...

NOELallie · 05/01/2007 12:44

All the dentists at our practice are from Eastern Europe - they all seem efficient and prefectly competent. Sadly they all have lovely white teeth - unlike mine - which makes me very uncomfortable . Last time the dentist asked me if his English was too bad as DS#1 didn't seem to understand what he was saying... I had to admit that it wasn't the English that was the problem, simply that he was a dentist ....dentiphobia (?) recognises no boundaries.

IntergalacticWalrus · 05/01/2007 13:16

feck, nearly 300 messages, and not a single parp. So please, allow me.

PARP

NOELallie · 05/01/2007 13:47

I've been here for a few months now but I confess to not knowing what 'parp' is meant to indicate. Is it an expression of scorn, irritation and disagreement or simply a rude noise for the sake of it. Would love to know...

SecondhandRose · 05/01/2007 17:36

Upwind is quite right, I am not blaming a lack of dentists on immmigration but exactly as she says more people are a drain on all of our resources.

beckybrastraps · 05/01/2007 17:47

I've never had an English dentist. I did have a Scottish one when I lived in Scotland, but all the rest have been Irish or South African. And I am old, so immigrant dentists can't be all that new....
