Help, really I think it can mean lots of different things, which was why I was trying to understand. You could talk about a family culture or a school culture. You can talk about a british culture, but it becomes hard to define because of the variation within- middle class and working class for example. I do think that all of these things impact on people, small local cultures- family culture, as well as wider culture- could be religion or language or village or country.
Sometimes finding the differences and similarities can be interesting and informative. I think all of these factors can influence how somebody grows up and develops. It can also influence how someone responds to adversity.

But there are other factors too, relative poverty or wealth, early and later experiences, internal make up- which is influenced by interacts with all of the above.

Twisted there have been a number of books recommended on this thread that will give you a good insight into women living under cultures where the male dominates in law and religion. You could also do wider reading on subjects like communism, a day in the life of One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, or Life and Death In Shanghai, or The Private life of Chairman Mao or Wild Swans, to give you some idea of adversity and trying to live under harsh and twisted rules. Do some wider reading perhaps? Try and empathise with the writers etc imagine yourself living under those conditions....it will help you and us

Flooding countries, and the populations who live there with millions of people is not a good idea and I can only think it does benefit big business, its brought about so many social problems, so many infrastructure crises...in so many ways, I just cant see what mass flooding of countries with low skilled labour does.

Will, I do empathise with anyone living under oppressive regimes and that includes ones in which women are oppressed by men.
I have read about oppressed women (and men and children) who have lived in oppressive regimes. I have also spent time with such women (and men and children) in different capacities.
It is in some ways unimaginable. Small homeless children talking about escaping the taliban comes to mind.
And yet I still want to understand what makes somebody behave in cruel and dehumanising ways.

I caught a bit of TV late last night. The screen showed a muslim woman covered except for face holding her infant. She loves her baby, but I realised that when that little boy reaches his mid-teenage years he will be bossing his sisters around (even if they are older) as well as his mother. He will become his father's enforcer in the home. And his mother's care and devotion wont matter very much at all compared to the position he automatically takes because he was born male.

Help how on earth do you know that? That is not thinking about culture, that is an absolute assumption (that I would argue is based on racism). Racism defined as,

Twisted What are you talking about? This thread is about the domination and cruelty of men over women esp. in the ME. I was remarking that given that that is so, this little boy may well also adopt misogynistic behaviour when he grows up. It is afterall his "inheritance" because it will be imbued into him that he is superior to his sisters and to his mother.

Will, Im not sure what you are trying to explain to me. I know that women experience all kinds of atrocity all over the world.
